The thing about fear is it can be immobilizing and incredibly unhelpful when you need to be at your most confident. So acknowledge it, yes, then put it aside to get to the work of networking and searching for the best jobs to apply for. You'll need to boost your confidence because one of those hovering3 fears is bound to come slamming down more than once during an aggressive job hunt -- the fear of rejection. Whether it comes in the form of an email, a call, a letter, or no response at all, it is all but impossible to escape rejection on the trail to employment. Know it's going to happen, and know that you can bounce back from each rejection by learning something from each experience.
As this Experience article on Yahoo! HotJobs suggests, when you hear from a hiring manager or an HR rep that the company has decided4 to "go in a different direction," don't just say "thanks very much," and hang up or hit send. Take the opportunity to ask some questions. Ask what added skills or traits you could work on that would have made a difference. Ask for pointers on what you said or didn't say during interviews. Try to get as much information as possible about your interview performance that will help you in your next round of interviews, and ask direct questions about skills the employer was looking for so you can research classes you may want to take to improve your chances with similar positions elsewhere.
Then hang up, hit send, and do something that will reaffirm your confidence in who you are. Take a walk. Get some exercise. Call a friend who will commiserate5, make you laugh, and remind you of just how capable you are at so many things. Rebuild, then start anew.
And remember this: The preparation and interviews may have led to a rejection, but the experience also helped better prepare you for the interview that will lead to the job that fits your goals and life. It may not come as soon as you want or need, but keep faith it will come. And that you'll be ready for it.
Want more interviews? Job searches in tough times like now demand polished resumes more than ever. If you are attempting to write your own resume, these seven tips are important to follow:
1. Select the best format1.
While most resumes are written in a history chronological2 format, often a better technique is to evenly balance between skill-set description, achievements, and employment.
2. Make certain your document is error free.
Since you are familiar with your own writing, you will "see" what you were thinking and not what is actually on the page. Do not rely on yourself to proofread3 your work and do not rely on spell-check. Find a friend who has strong grammar skills to check your work.
3. Find a balance between wordiness and lack of detail.
Employers need to see details about your work history and experience, but they don't need to know everything. The fact that you were den4 leader in your Cub5 Scout6 troop is irrelevant7. Keep information germane8 to the goal of attaining9 an interview. Eliminate information that is not related and will not have a direct impact on winning the interview.

4. Do not use personal pronouns.
"I," "me," "my," "mine," and "our" should not be on a resume. Resumes are written in first person (implied). Example: For your prior job description, instead of writing: "I hired, trained and supervised a team of assistant managers and sales associates" you would instead state that you "Hired, trained and supervised a team of assistant managers and sales associates." Fragment sentences are perfectly1 acceptable on a resume and actually preferred.
5. Use numerical symbols for numbers.
While we are taught in school to spell out numbers less than ten, in resume writing, numerical symbols serve as "eye stops" and are a much better method. Instead of writing "Developed a dynamic team of eight consultants2." it would be much more advantageous3 to state "Developed a dynamic team of 8 consultants."
6. Think "accomplishments4" rather than "job duties."
What makes you stand out from the crowd? How did you come up with a way to do things better, more efficiently5, or for less cost? What won honors for you? Information such as this is vital, will grab attention, and put your resume at the top of the list.
7. Keep it positive.
Reasons for leaving a job and setbacks do not have a place on a resume. Employers are seeking people who can contribute and have successfully performed in the past. Concentrate on communicating these issues and avoid any detracting information.
Remember, many first-time job interviews are conducted via telephone rather than in person. Make sure you are prepared for that telephone call when it arrives. And make sure you have a resume that will make the phone ring!
