Jean-Jacques Rousseau is one of the most influential thinkers during the Enlightenment in eighteenth century Europe. His first major philosophical work, A Discourse on the Sciences and Arts, was the winning response to an essay contest conducted by the Academy of Dijon in 1750. In this work, Rousseau argues that the progression of the sciences and arts has caused the corruption of virtue and morality.

This discourse won Rousseau fame and recognition, and it laid much of the philosophical groundwork for a second, longer work, The Discourse on the Origin of Inequality. The second discourse did not win the Academys prize, but like the first, it was widely read and further solidified Rousseaus place as a significant intellectual figure. The central claim of the work is that human beings are basically good by nature, but were corrupted by the complex historical events that resulted in present day civil society.

Rousseaus praise of nature is a theme that continues throughout his later works as well, the most significant of which include his comprehensive work on the philosophy of education, the Emile, and his major work on political philosophy, The Social Contract: both published in 1762. 有兩則關(guān)于同一條英語諺語Blood is thicker than water的譯例。其一是“清水不濃血卻濃”，其二是“血濃于水”。從字面上看，上述兩則譯例譯得固然不錯，似無可厚非。譯文讀起來很順，又比較易懂，但讀后似有不知所云之感。這是因為譯文的形象沒能準確地傳達出這條諺語的喻義來。 Longman Dictionary of English Idioms（p.28）上對這條諺語的解釋是"The relationship between people of the same family is stronger than other，relationships”因此，這則諺語似可以借用漢語中一句俗語“親不親一家人”來譯更能表達出“屬于同一血緣關(guān)系的一家人比別人更親近一些”的寓意。

語言是文化的表現(xiàn)形式。諺語同文學作品、詩歌一樣是語言的精華。英語諺語是富于色彩的語言形式，一般具有生動形象、喻義明顯、富于哲理的語言特征。在一定程度上，英語諺語反映了英語民族的文化特點。因此，翻譯英語諺語時，僅僅以語言之間詞匯的同義性（等價性）為前提，尋求對等的表現(xiàn)是不夠的。譯者須較多運用漢語的表現(xiàn)手段，力求能再現(xiàn)英語諺語的語言風格和豐富內(nèi)涵。只有多注意英語諺語字面以外所特有的語言內(nèi)涵色彩，才能使譯文諷喻得當，宜于說理，又不失原來諺語所具有的語言形象。

某些英語諺語和漢語成語、俗語在表現(xiàn)形式和含義方面是一致的或基本一致的。漢譯這些英語時，可惜用與其喻義相同或相近的成語或諺語及俗語直接對譯。這樣不但可以比較好地保持原文的神韻和形式，又使譯文易于為讀者或聽者接受。如：

有些英語諺語意在言外，語言含蓄，寓意深刻。如果僅從字面意義直譯成漢語，而不領(lǐng)會原文的具體含義及其效果，譯文勢必平淡無味。這樣既不能表達意思，又有損于原文的語言形象和豐富內(nèi)涵。因此，在翻譯時，應(yīng)在漢語中尋找那些與原文喻義相同或效果相似的成語、諺語或俗語來表達，則會使譯文形象生動，準確達意。試比較下列各譯例。

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones 如譯成“住在玻璃房子里的人，不應(yīng)扔石頭”不如譯成“己有過，勿正人”或“責人必先責己”。

Murder will out. 如譯成“謀殺終必敗露”，不如譯成“紙包不住火”。

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. 如譯成“愚者敢闖天使不敢去的地方”，不如譯成“初生牛犢不怕虎”

One cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs 如譯成“想吃煎蛋卷，就得打雞蛋”，不如譯成工“有得必有失”。或甚至可以引申為“不破不立”。

如果所要翻譯的諺語喻義清新，形象逼真，按其字面直譯其意，就能表達出原文的喻義來，則可直譯。這樣做既能較完整地保存原文的表達方式，且又可豐富我們自己的語言文化，一舉兩得，請看下面的譯例。

有些英語諺語常常采用對稱的修辭手段。使用這一修辭手段的目的在于加強語勢，宜于說理，讀后有心悅誠眼之感。漢譯這些諺語時，應(yīng)適當注意保持其修辭色彩，以便體現(xiàn)原文的表達方式。如：

You may take a horse to the water，but you can't make it drink.

如果按字面譯成，“你可以把馬牽到河邊去，但不能叫它飲水”至少是沒有充分體現(xiàn)這句諺語本身所具有的強烈對比色彩。從語法分析的觀點看，在這個句子里，情態(tài)動詞may和can雖然都表示“可能”的，但在含義上有所不同。這里may表示“事實上的可能性”，而can則表示“邏輯上的可能性”。并列連詞but使前后兩個分句意義相反，對比色彩強烈。在這種情況下，譯文也必須力求對偶整齊，前后呼應(yīng)，形成對照。如將此句譯作“牽馬河邊易，逼它飲水難”或“老牛不喝水，不能強按頭”會更好些。

總之，即使像諺語這樣孤立的語句，翻譯時也需盡一番揣摩切磋之功，否則譯文就可能與原文“貌合神離”，文不達意。譯事艱辛也許正在于此。
