Sages have been chattering all the time about the danger and devastation of judging a book by its cover. Admittedly, there is some truth in their effort, as it would be unsophisticated and misleading to calculate one’s moral character and dignity solely by his “cover”, be it his look, stature or even the quality of clothing. A closer study of the issue, aided by an acute sense of customs and convictions, however, reveals quite indisputably that one can learn, more or less, about people by the clothes they dress. The most significant information thus gathered is personal identity and cultural inclinations.
Coming first to indicate the affinity between the people and their clothing is the identity issue, which serves as a solid, identifiable evidence to my argument. With different styles of dressing, one intends to articulate his own identity, thus conveying some cultural subtleties, say, his likes and dislikes, his convictions and taboos. The example of Hippies and Yuppies comes readily to one’s mind. Their unconventional, rebellious dressing code, in a non-verbal manner, remained their counter-cultural manifesto. It is also true in the case of politicians and business people, whose clothing undoubtedly helps to differentiate them from those with different pursuits and occupations.
With one’s dress, a sensitive, well-informed mind could also gather crucial information about the customs, beliefs and other cultural inclinations of the community the person lives in, though, in some cases, the knowledge thus gained might be insufficient, but certainly not dismissible. As we are invariably conditioned by our customs upon the very moment of our birth, we grow up to be little creatures of our communities and convictions. Their beliefs are our belief, their impossibilities our impossibilities.Quite understandably, personal clothes, as an important ingredient of its cultural ambience, definitely speak with a tangible, visible language. The only difference is whether the “reader” is aware of this cultural cue or not. But it is forever out there: substantthing. Instead, a perceptive and reasonable mind forever knows how to explore more, but always by starting with proper knowledge and orientation from what they dress!

In the contemporary society full of pressures, rivalry has crept into nearly every area of our life, which has never failed to attract public attention. Given its ubiquitous presence, many people claim that friends will be pulled apart due to the competition. However, as far as I am concerned, the above claim has oversimplified the situation. Acctually, whether competition between friends usually negatively impacts friendship depends on what kinds of friendship they have established.
On the one hand, the competition between friends will have no negative effect on genuine friendship without any ulterior objectives. As is common sense, in the genuine friendship based on goodness, friends will always desire the good for each other. As a result, competition between them will be regarded as a good chance to achieve self-improvement and thus enhance mutual respect, which will be the foundation of forming a stronger friendship. Take my own experience as an example. Last semester, I and my best friend, Steve, competed for the presidents of the student union. In the course of engaging in the contest, both of us gave our best efforts to make well-prepared work, like writing and revising the speech draft, practicing the oral speech repeatedly and so on, which made us achieve great self-improvement. Whatever the result of the contest was, steve and I were more proud of each other for our progress, resulting in a closer relationship.
On the other hand, competitions will undoubtedly tear out the friendship based on utilities. The ground for friendship of this kind is mutual usefulness which means that once one becomes useless or even harmful to another person, the friendship will accordingly break up. As a result, the rivarly between these people will cause major rifts and thus ruin this kind of friendship. A good case in point is the workplace competition. In a company, the relationship between colleges can evolve into a kind of friendship, whose foundation is based on utilities. However, rivalries for a position or bonus are likely to result in workers resenting one another, thus destroying the friendship. The underlying reason is that competitions make them become opponents instead of friends. As a result, every employee in the contest will have win at all costs" attitude. This can result in a gap between the "haves" and "have nots" that may prove to be unhealthy in internal work relations.
In a nutshell, given the complexity the corelation between friendship and comit is an exaggerated claim that competition between friends usually negatively impacts friendships. As a matter of fact, it hinges on the kinds of friendship you have whether rivarly between friends will cause it fall apart. (440words, Zhaobo)

托福寫作模板及參考答案:
In a society changing amazingly, that how to gurantee the prosperity and success of a city, the common target of all citizens, has always been brought under the spotlight of the massive media. When talking about which factor plays the most crucial role in ensuring city's smooth development, among creating job vacancy, lowering food price or adjusting housing price, people’s notion varies from one to another. From my perspective, providing job opportunities for the unemployed is the best choice.
In the first instance, offering job vacancies to the laid-offs will not only guarantee the social security and safety but also strengthen the purchasing power of the public. For one thing, given the indisputable fact that the unemployed without any income are likely to commit crimes such as theft of wallets or burglaries due to lack of daily necessities, it is self-evident that the greater the number of laid-offs is, the more unstable our society will become. Therefore, after satisfying their basic needs of life with the income from the job offered by the government, they will no longer be a threat to the stability of the whole society, which is the solid foundation for social progress and prosperity. For another, as long as citizens with jobs have more free disposable money and thus possess stronger purchasing monitory power, the various industries will be stimulated and propelled to a large extent. To be specific, with the accruing wealth, an increasing number of people will purchase a private car to commute to their office, with the result that the whole industry of automobiles will experience a booming period. The same logic can also be true of other industries and fields.
Furthermore, there are obvious disadvantages of the other two policies, lowering the food price and making the price of house affordable. Despite the fact that keeping the food price low and providing affordable housing will lessen the financial burden of the dwellers in the city in a short term, these two practices would hinder the future success of the whole society. To illustrate, the low price of food will definitely decrease the income of food producers, especially the farmers who support their family by selling what they plant and raise. As a result, they are likely to have great difficulty in making their ends meet, thus ending up becoming homeless or jobless. Also, in a long run, increasing housing affordability will put a damper on the citizens’ passion for creating wealth and thus decrease the dynamics of the whole society. Specifically speaking, when the price is so cheap that nearly everyone can afford it with ease, no one will work hard any more.
In a nutshell, I am convinced that the most effective and efficient way to boom a city is to create more job opportunities for the jobless.
