Making mistakes
It’s good to make mistakes. And here’s why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you’re trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve and develop? The simple answer is, “You can’t.”
Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times — before he perfected the light bulb. When he was asked how it felt to fail that many times, he replied that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make a mistake, you are much closer to success. Why? Because every time you make a mistake, you are one step closer to success. But it doesn’t mean that you can make mistakes without thinking. Instead, when you try something new, you have to think it over, so that you can keep away from some unnecessary mistakes.
There is an old saying that goes, “If you are not making mistakes. You are not trying hard enough.” So go forward and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.

Once there was a piano player in a bar (酒吧). People came just to hear him play. But one night, a lady asked him to sing a song.
“I don’t sing,” said the man.
But the lady told the waiter, “I’m tired of listening to the piano. I want the player to sing!”
The waiter shouted across the room, “Hey, friend! If you want to get paid, sing a song!”
So he did. He had never sung in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had ever heard the song Mona Lisa sung so beautifully!

You, too, have skills and abilities. You may not feel that your talent is great, but it may be better than you think. With hard work, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may have no success at all if you just sit on your talent.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易動(dòng)感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
My hope turned to disappointment (失望), then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (折疊) and refolded many times.
Give me an an swer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.
( )62. The writer began to love her mother’s desk ______.
A. after Mother died
B. before she became a writer
C. when Mother gave it to her
D. when she was a child
( ) 63. The passage shows that ______.
A. mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter
B. mother was too serious about everything her daughter had done
C. mother cared much about her daughter in words
D. mother wrote to her daughter in careful words
( ) 64. The word “gulf” in the passage means ______.
A. deep understanding between the old and the young
B. part of the sea going far in land
C. free talks between mother and daughter
D. different ideas between the mother and the daughter
( )65. Wh at’s the best title of the passage?
A. My letter to Mother B. My mother’s Desk
C. Mother and Children D. Talks between Mother and Me.

Happiness is not far away
Happiness comes from the little things in life. Simple ways in our daily life of ten help the most. It is not a dream for you to make it come true but a shining star that guides you and a mirror that shows you the meaning of life in the world. If you feel that happiness does not come to you, here are the following steps which will lead you there.
To yourself
Start by treating yourself kindly and becoming your own best friend.
Give up trying so hard to become someone else who is not yourself right now. It’s better to just be you.
To your life
Walk in the park or along the street with a pet. Balance your life with activities and a good rest. Play and do those activities which gently nurture(滋養(yǎng))your own mind. Playing in your garden or filling your home with beautiful flowers is not a bad try and the memory of those flowers will be always carried with you.
Smile as you think about the future. If you smile, you can not have negative(消極的)thoughts! Concentrate on the positive(積極的) in this world, and look for something joyful.
To your work
Work hard and make efforts to reach your goals, and reward yourself when you are done.
Remove the task that is not useful. We are learning that doing too many tasks at the same time just doesn’t work.
Try writing down what is troubling you, discussing your trouble with yourself. The science now shows that as you write your troubles, your brain will change for the better.
By writing a daily thanks diary you will feel the positive memory and experiences once more, and by remembering these moments, your levels of happiness will rise.
To your friends
You can write a “happy letter” to your family and friends every day. Just a short note will do. You can do the following:
Monday: Write a thank-you note to your friend.
Tuesday: Write a short letter to your friend about a good moment you have recently experienced. Wednesday: Write about a nice moment you plan to experience in the future.
Thursday: Write a letter to someone that is important in your life.
Friday: Write three things that went really well today.
Saturday and Sunday: Go on with your daily thanks diary. If you pay attention to all that is good in
your life instead of negative thoughts, happiness will become a natural part of your day!

Do you know what a resolution is? It’s a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. For example, “Mom, I promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.” However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.
There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about yo u — will you make any next year?

As teenagers, what should we do? In my opinion, we should listen to the teacher carefully in class and take notes when necessary. It is a good habit to finish schoolwork on time every day. In our spare time, we had better read some books to get more knowledge. Also, we should eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and less unhealthy food. It’s necessary for us to take exercise three or four times a week. What’s more, we should go to bed early to get enough sleep. We had better not stay up too late. We should always remember to wash our hands before meals to keep clean. Exercise is fun and relaxing. It’s healthy for our mind and body. Healthy lifestyle helps us get good grades and live happily.
