  Dear “Daddy”

I don’t know your name, but Kate called you “daddy” for the entire flight last week. You kindly never corrected her. In fact, you didn’t even feel uneasy as you could probably tell that she was not confusing you with her own “daddy”. If she calls you “daddy” then you better believe she thinks you are all right.

I sat Kate, my 3-year-old who has autism(自閉癥), in the middle seat. Based on her previous interest in opening and closing the window shade, I figured she might be less of divided attention if she sat there. I watched the entire Temple basketball team board the plane, and then they all moved toward the back. For a moment I thought we might have a free seat beside us, and then you walked up and sat down with your briefcase and your important documents. The moment you sat down, Kate started to rub your arm. Your jacket was soft and she liked the feel of it. You smiled at her and she said: “Hi, Daddy, that’s my mom.” Then she had you.

You could have shifted uncomfortably in your seat. You could have ignored her. You could have given me that “smile” that I may hate because it means: “Manage your child, please.” You did none of that. You engaged Kae in conversation and asked her questions about her turtles. She could never really answer your questions but she was so fond of you that she kept eye contact and joint attention on the items you were asking her about. I watched and smiled. Thank you for being so kind to Kate and not having made me repeat those awful apologetic sentences tat I so often say in public.

  24. Why didn’t the stranger correct Kate’s calling him “daddy”?

  A. He felt warm about what she called.

  B. he was aware of what she meant.

  C. He intended to avoid further trouble.

  D. He didn’t want to embarrass her mother.

  25. What can we learn about Kate according to the passae?

  A. She developed a sense of stranger anxiety.

  B. She enjoyed her ride with the man beside her.

  C. She showed interest in the basketball players.

  D. She opened and closed the window shade a lot.

  26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

  A. Kate is often troublesome in public.

  B. Kate’s mother felt pity for the stranger.

  C. Kate was curious about the man’s stranger.

  D. The stranger communicated with Kate perfectly.

  27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the letter?

  A. To attract thousands of hits on the Internet.

  B. To bring autism to the attention of the public.

  C. To apologize for her daughter’s improper behavior.

  D. To thank a stranger for being kind to her daughter.C

Standing in line at passport control isn’t the most relaxing experience. The officer looks at your passport… at you … back at your passport… back at you. Kind of nerve annoying. But put yourself in their shoes They’re trying to figure out if your face actually matches the image on the page. Not the easiest task.

“People are often surprised at how poor they are.” Said David White, a psychologist at the University of New South Wales in Australia. He’s even tested Australian passport agents at the task. “Their performance was no better than group of untrained university students.”

In his latest study White and his colleagues studied how poor sleep – less than six and a half hours a night – might affect facial recognition. It turned out that bad sleep did lead to more wrong answers on a face-matching task. And officers in the study suffering from insomnia(失眠), meaning poor sleep plus other symptoms like anxiety, scored badly, too, compared to well-rested ones.

But here’s the twist: “When they made errors, people in this insomnia group actually had higher levels of confidence. They were more sure of heir wrong answers.” The results are in Royal Society Open Science.

To avoid these kinds of errors, White suggests security organizations pay more attention to which employees may be sleeping poorly. “That’s more a sort of everyday occurrence, certainly for new parents or people that may have their sleep affected by shift work, which is very common in these security settings.” And he also suggests that they screen their employees for signs of insomnia and consider assigning those officers to different jobs, which don’t involve recognizing faces all day.

  32. What can be concluded from the first paragraph?

  B. Customs officers are really annoying.

.Albert Einstein was a pretty smart cookie — he changed the world forever with his theory of relativity. 36 As you try to get the most out of your life, count yourself as Einstein’s student and listen to these solid pieces of wisdom.

  1. 37 .

In a letter to his son, Einstein wrote, “Mainly play the things on the piano which please you, even if the teacher does not assign those. That is the way to learn the most. When you are doing something with such enjoyment, you don’t notice that the time passes.”

38 Positive emotions help people remember more complex things.

  2. Aim to connect with value to other people.

When asked for some advice about education, Einstein replied, “Try not to become a man of success. Rather, become a man of value.” Values — what you believe or view as important — define what goals you set and the behaviors you have with others. 39 And then others learn they can trust you.

Progressing on your goals can make you happier and more satisfied. Once your values are in place, success typically follows.

  3. Get rid of what’s complex and explain the ideas easily.

When talking with French physicist Louis de Broglie, Einstein said that people should be able to describe all physical theories simply enough “that even a child could understand them.” 40 . It forces you to simplify, because kids don’t have a lot of the information you do to reference.

So dive in, learn and do more, starting today.

  A. Keep you stay on task.

  B. Focus on what you love.

  C. He was also a great teacher.

  D. We do better and learn more if we like what we do.

  E. Approach explanations as though you’re talking to a kid.

  F. You need to know how to maximize learning and achieve more.

  G. If those goals and behaviors are clear and consistent, you can make concrete plans.第三部分 英語知識(shí)運(yùn)用
