When I was watching a sports event yesterday, I met with an amazing sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record broken, but a show of pure courage and determination.
The event was swimming. I watched a man dive off the blocks and knew right away that something was wrong. I'm not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold - his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle.
I heard the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes (劃水) and you could tell he was worn out. But in those few awkward strokes, the crowd changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and yell things like, "Come on, you can do it!" He did. The crowd went wild.
Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to take part in the event. Even though he recorded the slowest time, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors------a man that gave his all, knowing that he had no chance but to compete because of the spirit of the games.

When I talked to some businessmen earlier today, one fellow asked me, “Would you give money to a homeless person, even when you know he’s going to use it to buy alcohol?” I replied, “If all I was giving was money, it’ll be one thing. But for me, whenever I do give money, that’s just the wrapping (包裝紙) . The real gift is hidden inside – it’s love. And l haven’t ever found any reason to limit gifts of love.”
By the end of the night, I decided to get some pizza. In front of me in line was a homeless-looking man. He was counting the few dollars bills in his hand, over and over again, until it was his turn to order. Just then, he told the young woman behind the counter, “I’ll have the full cheese pizza.” “Full?” she asked. “It’s really big.” she added, although what she really meant to say was that it’d be too expensive for him. “Yeah, the full” “.65,” she submitted. The bills he was counting weren’t going to make it. I wasn’t intending to get the whole pizza for him. But thinking back to my conversation with the business man, I realized that money was really just the wrapping.
I made my move. “Can you charge that pizza with my order” I said to the cashier. “Really?” the homeless-looking man said. “Really?” the young woman behind the counter repeated. “Yes, really.” That confused man and I had a sweet silent moment. To his silent question of why I was doing it, I added, “Just pay it forward for someone else.” And he said, “Well, you know what? I was actually treating these five homeless guys out there.” He was actually paying it forward, in the first place. What an unexpected fortune to get a chance to be a part of a man’s act of kindness.

31. What is the best title for the passage?

Can you believe your eyes? A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.
Martin Doherty,a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment,Doherty and his team tested the perception(觀察力)of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10,and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25.
The first group of pictures showed two orange circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time.
Next, both groups were shown pictures where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by grey circles. Here’s where the trick lies. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller grey circles—making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger grey circles—so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle.
When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren’t fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before. Older children and adults,on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one,and adults got it wrong most of the time.
As children get older,Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once:the tricky grey circles,as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they’re more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.
32.Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate______.
A. children’ s and adults’ eye-sight B. people’s ability to see accurately
C. children’ s and adults’ brains D. the influence of people’s age
33.When asked to find the larger circle,_____.
A. children at 6 got it wrong 79%of the time with no grey ones around
B. only adults over 18 got it right 95%of the time with grey ones around
C. children at 4 got it right about 79%of the time with grey ones around
D. adults got it right most of the time with grey ones around
34.According to the passage,we can know that_____.
A. a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background
B. an orange circle appears bigger than a grey one of the same size
C. a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real size
D. a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size
35.Why are younger children not fooled?
A. Because they are smarter than older children and adults.
B. Because older people are influenced by their experience.
C. Because people’s eyes become weaker as they grow older.
D. Because their brain can hardly notice related things together.
第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
Homework
Do maths problems 15 through 25. State the different forms of the verbs on page 50 of your French workbook. Read pages 12 through 20 of the Shakespeare play, and don’t forget to fill in the missing chemical symbols on the worksheet.
Sound like a list of your homework for the next few nights — or maybe even just for tonight? 36 It’s your teachers’ way of evaluating how much you understand what’s going on in class. And it helps strengthen important concepts. Here are some tips on how to do your homework.
37 It’s inviting to start with the easy things to get them out of the way. However, you’ll have the most energy and focus when you begin, so it’s best to use this mental power on the subjects that are most challenging. Later, when you’re more tired, you can focus on the simpler things. If you get stuck on a problem, try to figure it out as well as you can — but don’t spend too much time on it because this can mess up your homework schedule for the rest of the night. 38 But don’t pick someone whom you’ll be up all night chatting with, or you’ll never get it done!
Most people’s attention spans aren’t very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people. 39
Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time. Be sure to put it safely away in your backpack — there’s nothing worse than having a completed assignment that you can’t find the next morning or that gets ruined by a careless brother or sister. 40 Now you’re free to hang out.
A. Luckily, you can do a few things to do less homework.
B. Homework is a major part of going to school.
C. No one is expected to stay long, and people have very different learning styles.
D. If you need to, ask an adult for help or call or email a classmate for advice.
E. But if you’re really concentrating, wait until it's a good time to stop.
F. And no teacher still believes that “chewed by the dog” line — even when it's true!
G. When you start your homework, deal with the hardest tasks first.

As is often the case, when people are attending to meetings, having meals or waiting for buses, you can always find them addicting to their phones, completely ignoring others.
This is really a commonly phenomenon in our life. The reason is why smart phones nowadays can be used to playing mobile games and keep in touch with friends through QQ and WeChat. Therefore, too much exposure to phones are bad for people in terms of health. Moreover, people involved in phones fail to communicate well with these around them.
As far as I am concerned, people should wisely make use their phones to help with their work and study and care much about their family and friends than about mobile phones.
