The ancient Chinese game Go is considered one of the most complicated strategy games ever invented. Winning the game was seen as a test of human creativity.

That is, until a machine found a way to do it better. AlphaGo, an artificial intelligence (AI) machine built by Google’s DeepMind, won its first match against South Korean Go grandmaster Lee Sedol on March 9.

So what is next for AI and humanity?

DARPA challenges – competitions run by the US Department of Defense – are an example of robots and AI being put to the test in the real world. Past DARPA challenges forced researchers to build robots that could walk up and down hills.

Some people have been arguing that AI is harmful to the human race. In an interview with the BBC, UK scientist Stephen Hawking warned that “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race”.

So are we really on the edge of living in the world shown in the Terminator sci-fi movies?

“Not quite,” answered The Economist. After all, it’s not hard to get a computer program to remember and produce facts. What is hard is getting computers to apply their knowledge to everyday situations. In the DARPA challenges, the Los Angeles Times noted, many robots “fell over like kids learning to walk”.

“We take for granted things like balance and vision,” Thomas Johnson, founder of a robotic company told the newspaper. “But for a robot, to walk up and down hills requires so many complicated decisions to be made in real time, and it’s really difficult to do.”

Or as The Economist put it: “We have a long way to go before AI’s capabilities truly begin to approach the human brain.”

“Ultimately, our fate is in our own hands,” he wrote. “Since technology depends on the values of its creators, we can make human choices that use technology to improve the world.”

  21. Who defeated Go grandmaster?

  A. AlphaGo B. Stephen Hawking C. Lee Sedol D. Terminator

  22. How can an example of robots and AI win DARPA challenges?

  A. They can walk like kids.

  B. They can deal with things like balance and vision.

  C. They can remember and produce facts.

  D. They can walk in the real world.

  23. According to the Economist, what can we conclude about AI?

  A. It can beat human easily like AlphaGo.

  B. Proper use of AI will help human to improve the world.

  C. AI’s capabilities began to approach the human brain.

  D. The development of AI could spell the end of the human race.

Law school is the place where lawyers learn all the tricks of their trade. I attended a legal class at Wuthering Heights University.

The instructor said, “ Today we’re going to take an assumed case. A man named Hatfield is charging his surgeon with improper treatment because his doctor cut off the wrong leg.”

“Tina, you’re the lawyer for Hatfield. Tommy, you are the insurance company’s defense lawyer. Tina, you go first.”

Tina said, “ Well, first I have to prove the doctor didn’t know one leg from the other. I use charts, X-rays and slides to show the leg the surgeon removed was a healthy one. To do this, I have to call expert witnesses to testify to this effect and I will put my client on the stand and he will testify he could not find work as a dancer after his leg was removed.”

“Tommy, you object because that fact is irrelevant.”

  Tommy said, “ I object.”

The professor continued, “ I will be the judge in this case,” and said, “ objection ineffective.” “I will tell the jury(陪審團)to ignore the defense objection. As soon as the defense lawyer says it, the jury will remember his statement despite the judge’s instructions . Now, Tommy, it’s the defense’s turn.”

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Hatfield signed a contract giving permission to cut off his leg and did not specify which one. Once he signed the paper it was no longer the surgeon’s responsibility.”

Tommy said, “ I would like to show proof A.”

“What is it?” The professor asked.

“When Hatfield went to college, he failed history and was kicked off the football team.”

Tina said, “ Objection. His school grades have nothing to do with his leg.”

The professor said, “ Now class, pay attention. This is very important for anyone who is defending a client in this kind of case. You have to destroy the reputation of your opponents(對手) every chance you can. I hope you have learned something today. As the great lawyer O. J. Simpson once said, ‘Winning is everything.’”

  28. What happened in the case raised by the professor?

A.The surgeon denied removing a wrong leg.

B.A man was charged by the insurance company.

  C.The surgeon’s reputation was destroyed.

D.The doctor was charged with improper treatment.

  29. Tina said she would ask Hatfield to prove he can’t find his job so that______.

  A. she would get objection and eventually fail in the case.

  B. she can win the case with the support from the merciful and trustful jury.

  C. she’d like to impress the jury with his suffering due to the surgeon’s error.

  D. the surgeon would shoulder the responsibility for his career in the future.

  30. What can be concluded from the passage?

  A. In order to win the cases, lawyers will often use some tricks.

  B. Ineffective objection of the defense will be ignored by the jury.

  C. It is necessary to ruin others’ reputation as possible as you can.

  D.Winning is everything in law.

  31. What is the best title for the passage?

  A. An assumed court

  B. An efficient way to win

  C. An improper treatment

  D. A tricky professor

  D

Chinese consumers’ appetite for luxury goods and services appears unstoppable, with just 2 percent of the Chinese population responsible for one-third of the world's luxury items. Luxury consumption in China now spreads way beyond well-known car, clothing and jewelry brands.

For example, the luxury jet market in China is the fastest-growing in the world, with a market share of 25 percent. This trend appears to continue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, compared with only 2 to 3 percent in the US. China’s luxury jet market growth represents a major development in the private consumption of luxury items.

China’s high-quality red wine market also provides definite evidence of the growth in private consumption of luxury goods. In 2013, China became the largest market for red wine in the world, even overtaking the French, with 1.86 billion bottles drunk in China last year. Over the past five years, China’s red wine consumption has grown 136 percent.

But far more attention is still paid to the visible signs of Chinese consumers’ luxury shopping. Public consumption of such expensive global luxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to “gain face” and publicly display social climbing through material possessions.

Private consumption of luxury items is, however, less well-understood. According to my consumer research in this area, it is “self-reward” that lies behind consumer motivation in this area. Chinese consumers who have experienced rapid financial and economic gains appear particularly tend to the need to reward themselves for their success. But this has little to do with “gaining face” and impressing others and much more to do with the need for personal contentment.

Private consumption of luxury items is often a far more rational(合理的), planned and, therefore, deliberate process. The amazing growth of high-quality red wine consumption by the Chinese probably has a lot to do with health benefits. Luxury jets are also probably acquired for their immediate, rational rewards such as convenience and speed. Private consumption of luxury items in China is also likely to represent a more calm and reflective experience.

Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is set to continue in part due to the maturity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally.

32.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. 2% of the Chinese population consume one-third of the world’s luxury items every year.

  B. The luxury jet market in China took up 25 percent, compared with only 2 to 3 percent in the US.

  C. China’s red wine consumption has grown 136 percent, reaching 1.86 billion bottles in 2013.

  D. Luxury consumption in China includes cars, clothing, jewelry, jet ,wine etc.

33.What is the reason for Chinese consumers to buy the private luxury items?

  A. They have a strong desire to “gain face”.

  B. They tend to reward themselves for their success.

  C. They want to show off through material possessions.

  D. They have experienced rapid financial and economic gains.

  34. What can be concluded from the passage?

  A. The private jets in China are far more than those in the US.

  B. The growth in luxury consumption in China will slow down in the future.

  C. The luxury brands such as Prada and Armani can help gain face in Chinese consumer culture.

D.The maturity of the Chinese markets will guarantee the growth the luxury consumption.

35.What is the main purpose of the passage?

  A. To prove Chinese consumers’ appetite for luxury goods appears unstoppable.

  B. To offer some statistics about the growth in private luxury consumption.

  C. To show the growth of luxury goods in China and analyse the reasons.

  D. To persuade Chinese consumers to be more rational, planned and deliberate.

How to have a sense of humor

A sense of humor can be a person’s greatest virtue. This skill can help you interact easily with others, even improve your health. What’s not often understood is that 36 , you just have to learn to see the lighter side of things.

Learn some jokes. Sharing humor with others can be a great way to connect. If you want to bring some humor to social functions, learn a few basic jokes. 37 Look for things that go with your style of humor.

Find the humor in common. 38 Make a light joke about the weather or the city you live in to break the ice with people. If you are in the same business, make a joke about that profession.

Practice. Practice making jokes so you can improve and become more natural. 39 Tell them your goal and ask them to be honest with you. Listen to them if they tell you that your jokes need improvement. As you become more comfortable, expand your comfort zone by inserting humor into conversations with people not as close to you.

40 As you develop your sense of humor, think about the context. Do you get offended easily when people are making jokes? Whether you are telling jokes or laughing at jokes, you want to be careful not to offend anyone or hurt their feelings. Having a sense of humor means you approach life with a good-natured attitude. You don’t use others to get a laugh, and you don't laugh when people make fun of others.

  A. Start by using humor with trusted family and friends.

  B. you don’t have to be funny to make a sense of humor

  C. You can also look for humorous pictures and funny statements to share with others.

  D. If you’re not sure how to laugh or have a sense of humor about things, watch other people.

  E. Be careful not to be offensive.

  F. you don’t need to learn the importance that laughter is a key to a sense of humor.
