EDGEWOOD — Every morning at Dixie Heights High School, customers pour into a special experiment: the district’s first coffee shop run mostly by students with special learning needs.
Well before classes start, students and teachers order Lattes, Cappuccinos and Hot Chocolates. Then, during the first period, teachers call in orders on their room phones, and students make deliveries.
By closing time at 9.20 a.m., the shop usually sells 90 drinks.
“Whoever made the chi tea, Ms. Schatzman says it was good,” Christy McKinley, a second year student, announced recently, after hanging up with the teacher.
The shop is called the Dixie PIT, which stands for Power in Transition. Although some of the students are not disabled, many are, and the PIT helps them prepare for life after high school.
They learn not only how to run a coffee shop but also how to deal with their affairs. They keep a timecard and receive paychecks, which they keep in check registers.
Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia.
Not that it was easy. Chevalier’s first problem to overcome was product-related. Should schools be selling coffee? What about sugar content?
Kenton County Food Service Director Ginger Gray helped. She made sure all the drinks, which use non-fat milk, fell within nutrition (營養(yǎng)) guidelines.
The whole school has joined in to help.
Teachers agreed to give up their lounge (休息室) in the mornings. Art students painted the name of the shop on the wall. Business students designed the paychecks. The basketball team helped pay for cups.

A typical lion tamer(馴獸師)in people’s mind is an entertainer holding a whip( 鞭) at a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it’s the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.
How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight, start a business, travel more)—only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress?
This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become…take immediate action. If you’re clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.
32. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?
A. To entertain the audience. B. To show off his skills.
C. To get ready for a fight. D. To trick the lion.
33. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?
A. They feel puzzled over choices. B. They hold on to the wrong things.
C. They find it hard to make changes. D. They have to do something for show
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the expert mentioned in Paragraph3?
A. Tolerant. B. Doubtful. C. Respectful. D. Supportive.
35. When the world is “waving a chair in your face”, you’re advised to _____
A. wait for a better chance B. break your old habits
C. make a quick decision D. ask for clear guidance

Dear Peter,
I am writing to ask that you are able to do me a favor. I want to have a pen friend, hopefully, a girl in her early twenties, and with interests similarly to mine. In my mind, he is someone interesting in traveling, swimming, and playing table tennis. However, it would be better for her to have a pet dog as I have been kept one at home for some time. With such a pen friend, I hope I can share with her our experiences in traveling, taking care pets, or whatever we have in common. I believed I will improve my English by doing so and learn more about her countries. I am looking forward to hear from you soon.
Best regards,
Li Hua

When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.
33. 【答案】A
How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight., start a business, travel more)—only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress? 故A正確。
The end result is that we feel like we cant’ focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.

1. The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it is the chair that does the important work.
【分析】本句中含有一個(gè)強(qiáng)調(diào)句it is the chair that does the important work.。
2. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing,
All you need to do is focus on one thing,中在is的后面省略了to。

該空后面提供的語境“…buy the bestfitting, bestbuilt running shoes you can find.”說明這是為了跑馬拉松進(jìn)行的準(zhǔn)備工作,這件事應(yīng)該是在進(jìn)行馬拉松訓(xùn)練之前做的事情,與“before you begin your training”有關(guān)。故選C。
根據(jù)該空前面提供的語境“When you have found shoes that seem right, walk in them for a few days to doublecheck the fit.”可知E選項(xiàng)中they指的是前面提到的shoes,屬于指代一致性,另外feel good與the fit有關(guān)。穿著合適的鞋再進(jìn)行跑步訓(xùn)練與E中的“you can begin running in them”一致。
根據(jù)該空前面提供的語境“During the first week, do not think about distance, but run five minutes longer each day.”可知這里提到了一周即七天的時(shí)間,再根據(jù)空格后面的“it is wise to take a day off to rest”可知剩余的就是六天的時(shí)間,與A項(xiàng)意思一致。
該空前面提供的語境“But during the next week, set a goal of at least a mile and a half per run.”
For disabled people,“adopting a wheel chair” is not a temporary(臨時(shí)的)...
44:解析:選A。 I had never considered before how __40__it would be to use one.
As soon as I sat down...以及后面的made the chair begin to roll的暗示和常識(shí)可知,當(dāng)作者坐下后,應(yīng)該是作者的體重使得輪椅開始動(dòng)起來。
47:解析:選A。
It took me quite a while to get the metal footrest...
49:解析:選A。
My wheelchair experiment was soon...
聯(lián)系后面的thought it might be restful 中的restful可知,作者經(jīng)過一番周折想在輪椅上找一個(gè)比較舒適的位置來坐得放松些。
I would have to handle the thing myself!
55:解析:選A。 I would have to handle the thing myself,即作者明白了得自己來推動(dòng)輪椅,而不是有人推著他。
My hands started to ache和后面的the heavy metal wheels 可知,當(dāng)作者轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng)輪子讓輪椅移動(dòng)的時(shí)候,因?yàn)橘M(fèi)力,所以手都疼了。
58:解析:選A。
It made a deep impression on me.

One possible version:
Dear Editor,
Recently several small shops around our school have started a new business called “school lottery”. The lottery is becoming more and more popular.
Each lottery ticket costs five jiao and lots of students get addicted to this game. Some students use their money which should be spent on food to buy the tickets and some even borrow money to join in the chance game.
In my opinion,it is necessary to take measures to stop the game.On one hand, the school should explain the harmful effects of lottery to students and make rules to forbid students to buy lottery tickets. On the other hand, the local government should punish shop owners who carry out such business among students.
If both the school and the government cooperate in fighting it, I think the school lottery activity will be effectively stopped.
Yours sincerely,
Chen Hua
