I grew up on a farm outside Port Clinton, Ohio. I was the youngest son, with four brothers and four sisters. By the late 1960s, most of us were married and had families of our own. I worked full time and also had a part-time job on a tree farm.

One day, while I was visiting my parents in late summer or early fall, Dad mentioned he’d always wanted a maple tree for the yard. Mom agreed that it was pretty.Since it was hard for my parents to go shopping, I figured this was a great opportunity to get them something they’d appreciate. I also thought if they wanted one tree, two would be even better. I checked the price at work and decided it was a bit more than I could afford – but all of my brothers and sisters agreed to chip in (湊錢).

In northern Ohio, you don’t plant maple trees at Christmas, so we decided to surprise Mom and Dad with a special Christmas in October before the ground froze. Then my sisters went into action, planning a big holiday turkey dinner.

On the chosen Sunday, we all met at my house and loaded the trees in a pickup truck. I dressed up as Santa Claus. Then off we went, nine cars loaded with people and food. When we arrived at my parents’ house, Dad came out of the back door, thinking something was wrong. He and Mom were amazed when we told them why we were there.

When Christmas rolled around, of course, we couldn’t go to our parents’ house empty handed, so Mom and Dad got double presents that year. Almost half a century later, I still drive by the old farmhouse and smile when I see those big, handsome trees and remember giving a special gift to special people on Christmas in October.

  21. What made the author have the idea to buy his parents maple trees?

  A. That he wanted to buy his parents Christmas gifts.

  B. That it was a good season to plant maple trees.

  C. That he learned about his father’s desire for one.

  D. That it was convenient for him to get a maple tree.

  22. When did they plant the maple trees for their parents?

  A. In spring. B. In summer C. In autumn. D. At Christmas.

  23. What did the author finally do?

  A. He organized an early Christmas party. B. He paid for everything by himself.

  C. He got only one maple tree that year. D. He went to his parents empty handed.

  24. Which is the best title for the passage?

  A. Unforgettable gifts B. Special Memories of Christmas

  C. A Crowded Party D. Planting Maple Trees for Parents

  An Interview of Michelle Blinks

What were the best things about Los Angeles?

One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny. I also loved going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thing was going with my friends and having a picnic on the sand.

Where were the worst things about being there?

I definitely disliked that you had to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a ton of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are crowed with traffic. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.

Was it easy to meet people?

I think people there are pretty nice in general, but normally you only meet people through school or through work. I went to school there so that’s how I met most of my friends. I guess you could also try meeting people by going out to clubs or bars.

What did you usually do there?

If I was with my friends, we’d go out to dinner, see a movie, or sometimes go out to a club. There’s always something to see or do in Los Angeles whether it’s a museum exhibit or a concert, so we were rarely bored.

  25. What is the weather like in Los Angeles?

  A. Very cold. B. Hot all the time. C. Windy. D. Usually sunny.

  26. Which of the following is NOT true about Los Angeles?

  A. The traffic in Los Angeles is very busy.

  B. Going to beaches is popular for relaxation.

  C. Few people are aware of the pollution.

  D. People can always find excitements there.

  27. We can conclude that Michelle ______ in Los Angeles before the interview.

  A. drove a bus B. was a student C. visited a friend D. worked

  C

Many people have gotten pretty good at showing their best side on camera.

Three years since Oxford Dictionaries named it “word of the year”, the selfie has already become an important part of online culture. But in Asian countries like China, Japan and South Korea, many people won’t post pictures on social media without editing their faces with photo editing apps such as Meitu Xiuxiu.

According to The Telegraph newspaper, these hugely successful, homegrown photo editing apps specially focus on two clear psychologies (心理) of Asian users, and in particular, women: the eagerness to post selfies and the desire to look whiter than they really are.

As the US style website Mic put it, “What actually makes a good selfie comes from what we consider beautiful, and that is greatly different by culture.”

Photo editing apps play to Asian women’s dreams of achieving a more “Westernized” look that comes from having a more oval-shaped (瓜子形的) face, whiter skin and bigger eyes.

With the slide of a finger, the apps let them change their faces, just like they are having plastic surgery (整容).

Without a doubt, editing facial characteristics with an app has become something that people do for fun, and it isn’t harmful in most cases. But it is important to know that “the gap between reality and our online lives is widening as we sit on our phones playing plastic surgeon”, The Telegraph noted.

  28. The underlined word “selfie” in Paragraph 2 is a kind of ______.

  A. a smartphone app B. a new website C. a self-taken picture D. a web post

  29. What makes photo editing apps successful?

  A. Meeting the users’ need inside their hearts.

  B. Asking people to post their photos online.

  C. Asians wishing to look whiter than westerners.

  D. Asians’ need to look better than they really are.

  30. What do Asian women wish to look like?

  A. A round and white face with big eyes. B. An oval-shaped face with white skin.

  C. An oval-shaped face with bright eyes. D. A round and white face with beautiful teeth.

  31. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

  A. People can make plastic surgery using smartphones.

  B. Using editing apps does no harm to people.

  C. Editing apps may have a bad effect on real life.

  D. Editing apps has become a necessary tool.

  D

Growing up in one of the poorest communities on the south side of Atlanta, US, not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect something of myself.

On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about: I saw myself attending class in Sanders Theater, studying in Widener Library and eating in Annenberg Hall. I’d begin my day by asking myself these two questions: “What do I want in my life?” and, “Are the things I am doing today going to get me closer to that life?”

Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw other teenagers making, because those paths wouldn’t have gotten me closer to my goal. I found that being poor could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. Asking myself those questions gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to send just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down.

Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. March 31st, 2011, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard invited me to visit the campus where for the first time I got to see inside Sanders Theater, tour Widener Library and eat dinner in Annenberg Hall.

Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

  32. What does Paragraph 1 infer?

  A. The city of Atlanta is not a good place to live in.

  B. Many people believe that the writer will succeed.

  C. The author grew up in the north side of Atlanta.

  D. Living in a poor area didn’t stop her dreaming.

  33. Which was the writer’s goal of working hard?

  A. Being admitted to Harvard. B. Attending class in Sanders Theater.

  C. Studying in Widener Library. D. Eating dinner in Annenberg Hall.

  34. Which didn’t help the writer stick to her goal?

  A. Asking herself two questions every day.

  B. Touring in the Harvard campus.

  C. Reminding herself of her dream.

  D. Refusing to do what she shouldn’t do.

  35. What can we learn from the writer’s experience?

  A. Success starts with believing in yourself. B. You’ll never regret doing the right thing.

  C. Who you are begins with what you do. D. You’re responsible for your own actions.

One morning last week I looked out of my study window and saw that it was a fine day. No, it was a wonderful day: the sun shone down from a sky without even a single cloud.

But later that day, hard at work at my desk, I heard a loud noise on the roof. Turning to the window, I saw that the sky was now the color of charcoal (木炭). Two minutes later the rain poured, making rivers of water.

36 It’s extremely variable (易變的). Go ahead with your picnic in the local park by all means, but don’t suppose that because the sun is shining now, it will be when you open your pack of sandwiches. 37

The weather in Britain is not always bad. 38 This is one of the biggest reasons why the British talk so often about the weather. Wherever there are strangers standing or sitting close together, and talk cannot be avoided, the conversation focuses on the weather: “Yes, the weather has been good, hasn’t it?” or “39 ”

The unexpected change of the weather is something that every British can agree on. 40 Even those with different opinions on everything else in the world, such as the current argument in the UK about membership of the European Union, can talk about the weather without leading to a quarrel.

  A.It is just changeable.

  B. That makes it a safe topic of conversation.

  C. You’d better take an umbrella, just in case.

  D. What shocking weather we’ve been having!

  E. Strangers will choose to talk about the weather to break the ice.

  F. This story will give you some idea about weather in Britain.

  G. Are you going for a picnic?

  Dear Bill,

It’s definitely a wonderful idea to buy a birthday gift from China for your father. No doubt that your gift will be special and unforgettable for him. I’m glad that I can be helpful.

To be honest, it’s hard for me to make a decision which one among the three is the most suitable for your father. That depends. Personally I suggest that you buy a silk shirt. Even though it’s not that hard nowadays to buy one wherever you are thanks to the global economy, there is no denying that a silk shirt you buy from China will be much different. After all, China is home to silk.

Anyway, no matter which your final decision is, any choice you make will be meaningful for your father. And please bring my best wishes to your father.

  Sincerely,

  Li Hua
