Joint News Network: Five years ago, an 8-year-old Irish girl called Becky made a phone call to a demolition (爆破) company asking them to destroy her school and, if possible, to make sure all her teachers were in there. The thrilling request in sharp contrast to the sweet voice sounded terrifying. Ever since then, the recording has been being transferred and soon she has turned Internet meme.
According to the report, in not an anxious, nor a slow voice, Becky said that the teachers were always giving her extra homework on a Friday and therefore she wanted the demolition men to blow the school up, better with all her teachers in it. She also asked how much it would cost them to knock down as big an area as a ballpark.
The clerks of the company burst into laughter the very moment they received the call, which seemed to annoy the girl, who questioned, “Is this a demolition company or a joke factory?” Only then did they bite their lips to keep from laughing and ask, “What for?” The girl gave them her proposal and then asked them some details of the deal. Before hanging up, she said emphatically that she would fax the company the plan of the school and her teachers’ names.
As soon as the local station broadcast the telephone recording, the sweet and cute girl turned famous overnight. She was then invited on TV programs, where she was reported to smile purely and fly back and forth.

Scientists have long had it in their mind to make a robot lizard (蜥蜴). They began with finding out why a lizard can hang on a wall. They noticed the lizard’s toes were unique: they have suckers (吸盤), which enable it to hang on walls. They, therefore, made a robot with suckers on its hands and feet.
The robot could hang on the wall but fell off when climbing. So, they went on researching. 6 years ago, scientists discovered that suckers only were not enough. It is the bristles (剛毛) on each foot that adds friction (摩擦) and static adsorption (靜電吸附力) that makes a lizard move on the smooth wall easily without falling down.
Then scientists made great efforts to fix thick bristles to the robot’s hands and feet. However, the effect was not satisfactory. The robot still couldn’t attach itself firmly to the wall.
Scientists got puzzled: how on earth can the lizard climb on an extremely smooth wall or even on a ceiling without dropping off?
An accidental finding inspired them. One day a scientist happened to see a cat attack a lizard and bite off its tail. The lizard broke away from the cat’s teeth and threw itself on a wall to escape, only to fall off heavily on the ground. The scientist wondered: is it the tail that plays an important role in its travelling on the wall? He caught some lizards for an experiment. The result proved his assumption: a tailless lizard has no trouble walking on an ordinary wall but can’t on a smooth one. A further study showed the lizard’s tail can prevent it falling over backward and, what’s more, that the tail acts as an additional leg while one of the lizard’s legs leaves the wall, which is always the case while it is walking on the wall.
Thus, Tailbot, a super tailed robot, is born.
25. What part(s) would be a must if scientists just wanted a robot which can hang on the wall?
A. Suckers.
B. Suckers and bristles.
C. Suckers, bristles and a tail.
D. Hands, feet, bristles and a tail.

D. A lizard’s tail often stops it fall over backward while moving on the wall.

One new discovery after another has been over and over again plunging a hard-to-accept idea into scientists’ minds: there might have been an even more advanced super prehistoric civilization in the remote past.
Discovery One: Kept in Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, Turkey is a unique ancient map, which was first discovered in the 18th century. On the map, only the Mediterranean area is accurately mapped while other places, such as America and Africa, are well out of shape. When studying in a deeper way, however, the scientists were amazed at finding the ancient map was actually a bird’s-eye map. Compared with the pictures of the earth taken by the Apollo 8 spacecraft, the Turkey map is exactly the repeat of them and the deformable boundaries of America and Africa agree well with those of the Apollo 8’s pictures. To scientists’ astonishment, the map even describes the complex landforms of the Antarctic covered with several-kilometer- thick ice, which is as like as two peas with the map made by the 1952 Antarctica expedition with the help of the sonic echo sounder. But the old map was made in the remote ancient times!
Discovery Two: On the Lake Titicaca Plateau of South America lies the ruin of an ancient city, at the centre of which stands a huge red sandstone statue. Printed on it is a complete star map with hundreds of signs. Through years of study, scientists finally decoded the map and signs. This is a star map describing the starry sky 27,000 years ago. The signs record the extremely deep astronomic knowledge, which is even beyond the modern people’s understanding.
Discovery Three: In 1921, people happened to find an ancient Nied man’s skull in Zambia, Africa. In the right of the skull there is an edge-smooth round hole, which scientists have decided only a bullet can make. But the ancient Nied people lived about 70,000 years ago, when mankind is supposed to have just learnt to use axes.
Was there really a prehistoric super civilization? God knows!
29. The Turkey map was made in _______.
A. the 18th century B. the 20th century C. the 1950s D. the remote past
30. What is the most important discovery of Discovery Two?
A. An ancient city. B. A huge statue.
C. A star map D. Astronomic knowledge.
31. The hole in the ancient Nied man’s skull suggests that the ancient Nied people _______.
A. could make something like guns B. were very cruel
C. made much use of men’s skulls D. could use axes skillfully
32. The author uses the three discoveries to prove that _______.
A. ancient people were much cleverer than present people
B. there might be a super civilization in the remote past
C. the ancient civilization might come from outer space
D. God made everything, including the super civilization

The Art and Craft of Feature Writing, by William E. Blundell, a senior journalist for front-page news of The Wall Street Journal, was recently published by Oxford University Press. The book is originated from the internal lectures The Journal intends to train its front-page journalists. Through detailed and systematical analysis, the book tells the journalists how to find out rather than wait for news, what elements make a good news story, how to sort out good news clues, etc. Meanwhile, the book puts the main emphasis on how to turn a good news source into a good report, how to prepare a high-quality report which can catch and hold readers’ attention. What is the best feature of the book is that it is as good as holding your hands teaching you how to make news.
Common problem: Many a man makes such a mistake: they think they can eat up all the fine food but are overstuffed halfway. …a long tedious article which touches on all information but goes deep into none will get readers more easily bored and tired. It would be better to make an information-limited but well-developed story than to write an unclearly-stated giant-sized one.
Solution: Arrange the story according to its cause-effect relationship. There are two advantages: firstly, you can determine potential dynamic elements beforehand; secondly, it allows you to make a clear outline or blueprint.
Common problem: Some journalists are anxious to rush out the moment they get an idea, only to gather too little information for a valuable story after a waste of a lot of time and efforts.
Solution: The reason for causing this situation is lack of advance thinking and planning. Before rushing out of the editorial office, a journalist should think carefully about his story. For example, how large is the scope of the story? What is the topic of the story? What is the best expression? Even what is the most suitable tone?
William E. Blundell once won a Mark Borg Prize for Journalism and a Leslie Howard Prize for Public Service. In this book, by employing true examples from US newspapers, the writer has done well in writing a handbook for news writing as fascinatingly as a novel does with now and then flashes of humorous description.
33. The book is aimed at _______.
A. journalists B. editors C. photographers D. writers
34. The parts in a different print (from the second to fifth paragraph) are laid here ________.
A. to tell readers how to make news B. to show how practical the book is
C. to help solve problems in news-making D. to show the structure of the book
35. The passage most probably serves as _______.
A. a handbook B. a book introduction
C. an instruction book D. an ad for a book

Being short is annoying, especially to men, for it often brings negative influence to their work, life and communication. 36 For the man built both short and strong, specific styles will flatter, while others will give the unfortunate impression of a man put into clothes either too large or too small.
Shorter men will look smart when dressed in form of neat and pleasing simplicity, while one dress on top of another will make you look larger and therefore shorter. A short jacket isn’t a good choice either, for it will expose your fetal weakness ---- short and thick legs. 37 Better match a loose-fitting coat with tight trousers. While wearing a shirt or T-shirt outside, better tuck it into the trousers. 38
__39 Therefore, a suit of a darker colour, especially formal dresses of good-quality materials, is strongly recommended, so that you will look more mature. For example, a purple suit with a light yellow shirt, trousers of a similar colour and a nice tie can very well turn you into a mature and experienced man.
__40 Imagine: what a small man with wild hairs and a dirty shirt would look like, no matter how fit and well-cut his clothes are. So as a shorter man you should always keep your hair neatly combed, your face clean shaven, and your shoes brightly polished.
A. A jacket which just touches hips is advisable.
B. Always wearing good clothing, however, helps a lot.
C. Neat hair makes a short man look much more charming.
D. A shorter man should be particular about his appearance.
E. This way, your waistline appears and you look straight and taller.
F. A young man of small stature is often easily mistaken for a child.
G. Yet making correct choices of clothing can improve your images.

Nowadays, it’s fashionable for young student to have iPads. Used an iPad, we can listen to music, download a lot of learning materials and read it. Obviously, it’s of great help to our studies, especial to our English listening skills.
Some students, however, bring their iPads to the classroom listening to music with earphones, but some even play video games, which make teachers and other students greatly annoyed.
For my opinion, the classroom is a place to study, and concentration was terribly needed. Therefore, we should make a good use of iPads and other modern communication tools to help with our lessons. Meanwhile, schools should make some rules instruct the students to use iPads properly.

作文
Dear Headmaster,
I’m writing to persuade you to let us surf the Internet in the classroom. We know you’re afraid that we may be exposed to unhealthy websites. Actually every coin has two sides. We still think that surfing the Internet can bring us much more advantages。
First of all, I think it would be better if we can surf the Internet, because there is a wide range of learning resources on the Internet that we should make good use of. Furthermore, we can broaden our horizons by reading various news online. Last but not least, as high school students, we are building up our sense of judgment. Given chances, we are sure that we will learn how to stay away from unhealthy websites.
I do hope you can take my advice into consideration and make a final decision.
Looking forward to your reply.
