I have always had a fascination with the archaeological world. Archaeology provides me with the opportunity to question how my ancestors lived, worked, survived and created what is now the world today. My interest in learning about humanity’s past arose from when I was a child, where I was captivated with artifacts in museums. It provided a forum which was to my imagination and introduced me to experimental archaeology.
As I have matured, my enthusiasm and excitement for archaeology has grown after visits to Chester and York, where I was able to appreciate not only the archaeological artifacts found in these places, but also the magnificence of the standing buildings that remain today. This lead to a particular interest and eagerness to learn more about the ways of everyday life for the people living in the ancient world, in particular the Roman Empire.
My A-level study of archaeology has demonstrated my commitment to learning techniques, methods and theories needed to engage in effective research, excavations, delicacy and preservation of artifacts. Reading books such as ‘Archaeology is Rubbish’ by Tony Robinson and ‘Excavation’ by Steve Roskams has continued my studies. These books have provided me with extra knowledge of how to deal with specialist sites, such as waterlogged and underwater excavations. Additionally, they have developed my understanding of techniques used by archaeologists to gain the most accurate results when reconstructing the past.
A-Level Religion and Philosophy has extended my knowledge of archaeological aspects such as Roman religion and ritual. Moreover, geology has developed my understanding of how geological features can impact the landscape, which is essential for desktop archaeology and investigating settlement. Geology has also increased my ability to date and provide a location as to where certain artifacts may have come from. I have experienced hands on archaeology at the ‘Dig’ centre in York. This developed my practical methods of excavation and interpretation of artifacts. The ‘Dig’ centre gave me the opportunity to familiarise myself with animal bones and how they can be used to help archaeologists in recreating the past.
I have a particular interest for many sports including, karate, rugby and athletics. My commitment to Karate has earned me the rank of 1st Dan black belt, which has qualified me for the teaching of the subject, and given me effective leadership qualities. Similarly in rugby, I am in the process of becoming a qualified referee. This has been a valuable experience as it has developed my team leading, and team work skills.
My extensive work within the college has gained me a position on the college council as enrichment representative; where I have brought the students and staff closer together. Subsequently, the responsibility and trust placed in me to do this job has provided me with excellent communication and organization skills. Furthermore, as illustrated above, I am a conscientious, hardworking student and I’m more than willing to accept and overcome new challenges that I may face during a place at higher education.
英國(guó)留學(xué)研究生的申請(qǐng)流程
一、選擇學(xué)校
一般學(xué)生的意向?qū)W校能夠選五到十個(gè),而且要有不同的檔次,主次也要分清,確定哪些才是自己最想申請(qǐng)的。學(xué)校的選擇上可以參考各類的排名來(lái)選擇。
二、導(dǎo)師套磁
套磁也得有針對(duì)性,要清楚自己的專業(yè)方向會(huì)有哪些導(dǎo)師,之后就能確定意向?qū)熈?。那么學(xué)生之后需要做的就是套磁,需要給導(dǎo)師寫郵件,表達(dá)自己想在這里讀研。注意這份郵件內(nèi)容要盡量簡(jiǎn)潔,要把自己的基本情況都表明,當(dāng)然最重要的內(nèi)容是自己的研究方向還有研究成果這一些。
第一段,用簡(jiǎn)單的幾句話說(shuō)說(shuō)自己的背景,以及寫這份郵件的用意。注意寫背景的時(shí)候,要把自己的亮點(diǎn)都概括出來(lái)。而且自己寫信的用意要在開(kāi)頭就先寫清楚??赡軐W(xué)生們不太習(xí)慣這樣的方式,但在西方中是很習(xí)慣在開(kāi)頭就寫明自己的目的。
第二段中,要把自己對(duì)于教授在科研方面有怎樣的看法談一談,而且還得是配合著自己的背景,和導(dǎo)師在項(xiàng)目中的需求去談。比如導(dǎo)師目前是在做什么方向的,而自己恰好有這樣的經(jīng)歷,那就是可以談的結(jié)合點(diǎn)。
第三段,把自己這些經(jīng)歷中比較值得說(shuō)的都重點(diǎn)的講一講。在這個(gè)部分中要遵循一個(gè)原則,是自己能給導(dǎo)師帶來(lái)什么,能在項(xiàng)目組中有什么用處。
三、面試
很多學(xué)生在面試這個(gè)環(huán)節(jié)都很緊張。初次面試如果怕自己沒(méi)有辦法表達(dá)出很多東西,可以先打印出自己的資料,或者是把這些內(nèi)容做成PPT,只要把自己的優(yōu)勢(shì)突出就行。面試時(shí)老師可能會(huì)按照學(xué)生的資料去問(wèn)一些問(wèn)題,這就得學(xué)生們有一個(gè)事先準(zhǔn)備。而且導(dǎo)師所研究的東西也得有一點(diǎn)了解,不然老師若是提到這個(gè)項(xiàng)目的內(nèi)容,而自己什么都說(shuō)不出,就很沒(méi)有優(yōu)勢(shì)了。
四、填申請(qǐng)表

誤區(qū)1:英國(guó)研究生一年速成,含金量低?
并不是。研究生英國(guó)留學(xué)為期一年,一年三個(gè)學(xué)期,在這期間安排了各種教學(xué)課程,總計(jì)要學(xué)習(xí)8-12門課程,課程形式包括講座、導(dǎo)師輔導(dǎo)、小組討論等,德智體美全面發(fā)展。而且學(xué)生基本上沒(méi)有什么假期,相當(dāng)于將兩年的時(shí)間壓縮成一年,能夠?qū)W習(xí)到的東西也足夠豐富,不亞于其他國(guó)家。
誤區(qū)2:兩耳不聞窗外事,一心只讀圣賢書
不正確。雖然說(shuō)以學(xué)業(yè)為重是件好事,但如果只聚焦于學(xué)業(yè)上那也將失去留學(xué)的意義。要知道英國(guó)學(xué)校除了關(guān)注學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí),更希望看到學(xué)生能夠積極參加課外活動(dòng),雖說(shuō)外國(guó)教育的期末應(yīng)試成績(jī)比重不大,但還要看團(tuán)隊(duì)協(xié)作能力以及社會(huì)實(shí)踐的活躍程度。通過(guò)實(shí)習(xí)、學(xué)術(shù)研討會(huì)、業(yè)內(nèi)招聘活動(dòng),社團(tuán)組織等都可以豐富自己的經(jīng)歷。
誤區(qū)3:根據(jù)排行榜進(jìn)行學(xué)校選擇,不是排名靠前的我不念
想必很多留學(xué)生都有過(guò)這樣的想法,要知道很多留學(xué)機(jī)構(gòu)在給學(xué)生推薦一些排名進(jìn)行參考的時(shí)候,只是作為一種有價(jià)值的參考,反而很多學(xué)生把這個(gè)當(dāng)成了一種“硬性要求”。其實(shí),排行榜并不能作為擇校的標(biāo)準(zhǔn),很多排行榜都是由非政府的商業(yè)機(jī)構(gòu)頒布的,而且排名榜的參考標(biāo)準(zhǔn)和數(shù)據(jù)都有所出入,如果非要把排行榜當(dāng)成硬性要求,那就建議大家在看排行榜之前先了解排行榜的排行依據(jù)。
