1:A Ball to Roll Around
滾球
Robert G Allman
I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard in Atlantic Cityand landing on my head. Now I am thirty-two. I can vaguely remember the brightness ofsunshine and what colour red is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity can dostrange things to people.
It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn' t beenblind. I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise.I don' t mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of themmade me appreciate the more what I had left.
Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person isable to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. Theadjustment is never easy. I was bewildered and afraid. But I was lucky. My parents and myteachers saw something in me ——a potential to live, you might call it ——which I didn’t see,and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn't been ableto do that, I would have collapsed and become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest ofmy life . When I say belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self-confidencethat helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone. That is part of it. But I mean somethingbigger than that an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person thatsomewhere in the sweeping, intricate pattern of people there is a special place where I canmake myself fit.
It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the mostelementary things. Onc e a man gave me an indoor baseball. I thought he was mocking meand I was hurt . I can' t use this, I said. Take it with you, he urged me, and roll it around. Thewords stuck in my head. Roll it around! By rolling the ball I could hear where it went. This gaveme an idea how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible playing baseball. At Philadelphia' sOverbrook School for the Blind I invented a successful variation of baseball. We called itground ball.
All my life I have set ahead of me a series of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time. Ihad to learn my limitations. It was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildlyout of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anywaybut on the average I made progress.
Tips on Travelling to China the First Time
1. Which cities are preferable for tourists to visit on their first trip to China?
What you see depends how long you can stay in China. Generally speaking, tourists shouldfirst visit cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an.
Beijing is a political and cultural center that offers some scenic attractions: Badaling which is apart of the spectacular Great Wall; Gugong (Imperial Palace) where emperors of the Ming andQing dynasties lived; Yiheyuan (Summer Palace) which is an imperial garden of the Qingdynasty; and Beihai, also an imperial garden used by successive emperors in the Yuan, theMing and the Qing dynasties. There is more to Beijing than buildings; Foods such as authenticBeijing roast duck and instant-boiled mutton have proved popular with tourists as well.
Shanghai, a shopping center for best buys, is the largest city in China. Tourists will be satisfiedwith what the city supplies, from various snacks and cakes to handicrafts and textiles.Neighboring Suzhou and Hangzhou, only a couple of hours away from Shanghai by train, aretwo garden cities, each considered by Chinese to be "paradise on earth."

Other interesting sites in the vicinity are Dayan Ta (Great Wild Goose Pagoda) and Gu Lou(Drum Tower), both erected in the Tang dynasty; and the Huaqing Hot Springs where visitorsmay bathe in the warm mineral water. This site used to be the private baths for Yang Guifei, favorite concubine of the Tang emperor. If you are of Chinese descent, you may pay tribute tothe tomb of Huangdi (Yellow Emperor), first Chinese emperor. In addition, tours will enjoy thepleasing Tang music and dance, as well as the duplication of fancy Tang dishes availablethere.
2. When is the best time for the trip? Where are the best places available in winter?
China is a vast land with great contrasts in landscape and climate. Consequently, tourists maypay a visit anytime. Spring and autumn are supposed to be the best times to tour cities likeBeijing, Shanghai and Xi'an.
If you dislike the cold, you can visit Kunming, a Springlike City, in south China, which is knownfor its year-round spring weather. A closer look takes you to the Stone Forest and the DianchiLake. You can also go to Xishuangbanna to enjoy subtropic scenery. Guilin in south China lieson the banks of the Lijiang River. Down-stream Yangshuo stands by. The saying goes, “Guilinhas the most beautiful scenery in China, while Yangshuo is the most fascinating part of aGuilin tour”, and so a tour of these cities will be a most rewarding experience for you. Harbin isparticularly good for sightseeing in January and February. Those who have never seen any snowin Hong Kong or Macao may either view the ice festival or go skiing and skating in this world ofsnow.
3. What is well worth purchasing in China? Where are those things available?

The Scenic Three GorgesCaptured in Their Essence
Li Hairui
The Yangtze River boasts of the fascinating Three Gorges created by MotherNature in all herglory. The Three Gorges consist of grandiose Qutang Gorge, meandering Wu Gorge andheavily-shoaled Xiling Gorge, all saturated insplendid colors. Tucked away among these arethree little gorges. All ofthem form a veritable wonderland of clear water with plungingwaterfallsand velvety hillsides, often rising to fantastic peaks-beckoning travelersfrom afar.
Today, as part of China's national development, the massive Three-Gorge-Hydroelectric Projectis set to become a reality The advertisement of the"Farewell to the Three Gorges" touches thehearts of numerous travelerswho know them, both in China and abroad. Excursionists inincreasing num-bers are visiting them to participate in this farewell. Raising the water level bybuilding the dam is not expeaed to decrease the essence of the Gorges' beauty. On thecontrary, upon completion of the project, this scenic areawill almost be preserved in itsentity.
Nevertheless, visitors' fond memories dwell upon past recollections of thetraditional gorges. With these thoughts in mind, Mr Yang Heyue, an artist, cruised through the Three Gorges fourtimes in succession.
As he lookedeastward with the current of the water, Mr Yang exclaimed enthusiastically,"Keepthis fabulous scenery as it is!" Then he donned the tools of his trade-parchment, brush andink. With earnest emotion, the artist captured today'sThree Gorges on paper.
Yang Heyue was born at the foot of beautiful Yandang Mountain. From hischildhood, nature washis inspiration. During the 60s, he completed his stud-ies at the China University of Art(formerly the Zhejiang College of Art),giving him the rudiments of his artistic skills. In his earlyyears aftergraduation, he took up wood carving, only to abandon it in later years forarelentless pursuit of depicting mountain and water landscapes. Part of hisstudies wascomparative art illustration, which enabled him to fuse classicaland contemporary techniquesinto his own distinct and elegant style. At many exhibitions, his works received wide acclaimand distinguished awards from art collectors and lovers both at home and abroad.
The Three Gorges have always been a popular subject matter for painters, most of whomportrayed only a section or passage. Mr Yang, however, unitedthe panorama of all threegorges contiguously from Baidi Township in thewest to Gezhou Dam in the east, onto onescroll. This is rare and represen-tative of his momentous spirit.
His "Three Gorges" is painted so exquisitely that the interpretation seems to touch the heartof the gorges. Mr Yang's depiction is very unique and detailed, and light appears to radiatefrom his smoothly flowing brush strokes. Al-though the force of his brush is turbulent andunrestrained, Yang Heyue's paintings have the right touch of color and balance. This work fullyexpressesthe painter's profound affection for the area.
The highly decorative binding of the scrollis done in an accordion-like tra-ditional paper-foldingtechnique. When folded, it is a book; unfolded, theentire scene can be viewed. The book ispocket-size and very portable forwestem tourists.
The painter says, "Many artists like to publish coffee-tablebooks, I prefer the beauty, originality and portability of a small, long andelegant scroll at a reasonable price." Specialattention has been paid to cur-rent consumer trends in tourism. The artist's intentioncorresponds with bothChinese and foreign tourists' preference in buying souvenirs. Thisfolding"pocket scroll" has more appeal than a coffee-table book. Thus, beautifuland lofty artis made available to the general public.
As long as this humble "pocket scroll" lives, so shall the beauty of the ThreeGorges.
