My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up to situations, is hesitant to try new things. When with close friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and chants, “Girls rule, boys drool.” But when that comfort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous.
This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy” is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me. But this has been a year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she completed her first kids’ triathlon (三項(xiàng)全能) .
On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together.
And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared(快速上升). My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face.
I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before.
All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.
Shine on, sweet baby.
24. Kelly is nervous when ________.
A. boys are around her B. she changes into a leader
C. she is away from her mom D. situations are new to her
25. We can know from Paragraph 3 ______.
A. the race began in the early morning B. the whole family gave Kelly support
C. Kelly was eager for her turn in the race D. Kelly prepared for her brother’s birthday party
26. Seeing Kelly’s performance in the race, the author felt ______.
A. excited and proud B. anxious and uneasy
C. worried and hesitant D. curious and concerned
27. In the ending paragraphs the author “felt like I won that day” because Kelly ______.
A. overcame the fear B. expressed love to her
C. won the gold medal D. took part in the sport

You know the saying "You're as young as you feel." Well, there may be some truth t, according to that, according to researchers at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist who studies how the mind influences the body, and colleagues reviewed the scientific literature for evidence that a person’s perception of their age might influence their health. They published their results in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.
In one study that Langer led, 47 women had their hair done. The women who thought their new hairdos made them look younger did look younger to objective observers, who were shown before-and-after pictures. The women who thought they looked younger also showed a drop in blood pressure. Another study involving 4,421 men found that thise who became bald(禿頂)at a relatively young age were more likely to get cancer and heart disease than men who did not. Similarly, another study involving 2,017 men found that those who lost their hair early were more likely to develop heart disease. “We believe that the feelings associated with being older than one’s real age account for some of these health outcomes,” the researchers wrote.
The researchers also described studies that found that women who had children later in life were more likely to be healthier and live longer than those who had children early, which they attributed to the fact that these mothers tend to spend more time with younger women. Similarly, people who marry younger partners tend to live longer than those who marry older partners, according to other studies.
Taken together, the research “supports the general mind-body hypothesis(假說(shuō))that when a younger mind is prepared, a younger body can accompany it.” While the mechanism remains unclear, the researchers figured that suggestions associated with aging can “make one unconsciously or consciously aware of old age and set in motion a series of physiological processes that can have real effects on short-term and long-term health.”
28. The underlined word “perception” in Paragraph 2 means .
A. view B. appearance C. Influence D. creation
29. Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 3?
A. Blood pressure is highly related to hairdos.
B. Feeling older than real age may be tied to health problems.
C. Getting cancer or heart disease is the cause of hair losing.
D. The women who love hairdos look younger than those don’t.
30. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that .
A. a younger mother is more likely to live longer
B. the younger one of a couple lives much longer
C. often staying with younger people can benefit people’s health
D. people who want to live longer need to marry young
31. The passage mainly tells us that .
A. Getting bald too early is not good to marry young
B. Women had better give birth later in their life
C. Feeling younger to a couple is very important to their health
D. People’s feeling of their age may have an effect on their own health

Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.
A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (紋身)nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances» so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.
Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees (雇員),because those people represent the companies to their customers.
As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.
There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply cause he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.
32. Which of the following is the newspaper editor’ opinion according to Paragraph 2?
A. People’s appearances carry messages about themselves.
B. Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.
C. Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly treated.
D. Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace.
33. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview.
B. What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies.
C. Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates.
D. Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates.
34. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Employees Matter B. Personal Choices Matter
C. Appearances Matter D. Hiring Managers Matter
35. The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as .
A. enthusiastic B. negative C positive D. sympathetic
As CEO, you need to realize that each team member plays a role in your company and each individual is part of the whole. If you want to work effectively, your team must be harmonious. Here's how:
Build trust and respect. Make a team-oriented environment based on trust and respect without which there will only be limited success. A start-up is like a ship going through high
uncertainty. The captain needs the trust of his team, because people follow trust and honesty, not a person. 36______
Be true to your word. If you demand high productivity and quality work. you'd better be as good as your word. You get what you give. 37 When team members notice that you are a reliable person, they will imitate your behavior
38 If you want to improve teamwork, help people get to know each other better.Organize in-person meetings for all workers (all teams) at least once a year-more often if at all possible. Informal conversations bring people together and warm up human relationships. One option is to invite your team to play a game, like football or basket ball. If players want to win, they have to focus on cooperation. 39
Take advantage of conflict. 40 Somewhere, somehow, conflict will show up. When confrontation between employees gets out of hand in a start-up, the CEO must face it. Don 't complicate the situation by deciding what is good or bad. Listen to all sides carefully and then talk to other team members who observed the quarrel. Brainstorming solutions favorable for both sides may even result in ideas that would never have come to mind without the conflict.
A. Organize a meeting for all employees.
B Lay stress on the importance of teamwork
C. A good team will always be efficient and productive.
D. There are no teams without occasional misunderstandings
E. If you promise to do something, be sure you will fulfill it
F. Thus their pure characters are exposed and real relationships are built
G. The stronger the trust is. the better the team will navigate without the captain on board

It was on the early afternoon of a midOctober day in 2012. Bismark Mensah, who came to America several months ago, was collecting carts (手推車(chē)) outside a Walmart in Federal Way. It was a parttime job for him. He earned $9.05 an hour in charge of getting carts out of the parking lot.
He was used to finding stuff in carts that customers had somehow forgotten—keys, credit cards, wallets. And he turned them into a customer service. But a particular item stood out. It was a white envelope with a clear window in the middle, and there was a lot of cash in it, around $20,000. Mensah turned them into customer services.
Because of what he did that afternoon, Mensah is now the winner of Walmart's national 2013 “Integrity(正直) in Action Award”.
Bismark Mensah says that since the story ran, he has become the model the youth in Ghana (his native country).
He is now employed fulltime at the Federal Way Walmart, earning $10.95 an hour, up from the $9.05 an hour he earned working parttime.
Mensah, 33, no longer collects carts and such. He is in the backroom, dealing with inventory(庫(kù)存). “I want to learn everything about operating a store like Walmart store,” he says. He plans to return to Ghana to run some shops owned by his family. He also plans to go to college and earn a degree in business administration.

*o*m The Healthy Habits Survey(調(diào)查)shows that only about one third of American seniors have correct habits. Here are some findings and expert advice.
1.How many times did you brush your teeth yesterday?
Finding: A full 33% of seniors brush their teeth only once a day.
Step: Remove the 300 types of bacteria in your mouth each morning with a batteryoperated toothbrush. Brush gently for 2 minutes, at least twice a day.
2.How many times did you wash your hands or bathe yesterday?
Finding: Seniors, on average, bathe fewer than 3 days a week. And nearly 30% wash their hands only 4 times a day—half of the number doctors recommend.
Step: We touch our faces around 3,000 times a day—often inviting germs(病菌)to enter our mouth, nose, and eyes. Use toilet paper to avoid touching the door handle. And, most important, wash your hands often with hot running water and soap for 20 seconds.
3.How often do you think about fighting germs?
Finding: Seniors are not fighting germs as well as they should.
Step: Be aware of germs. Do you know it is not your toilet but your kitchen sponge (海綿) that can carry more germs than anything else? To kill these germs, keep your sponge in the microwave for 10 seconds.

Elizabeth Bishop, who was famous for the poetry A Prodigal, Filling Station , Sandpiper, Manuelzinho and so on, was an influential(有影響的) American poet of the 20th century. Her poetry often shows things that concerned her throughout her life, such as her search for a sense of home. Her troubled childhood and feelings of loneliness from this time affected her character and poetry.
Bishop's painful childhood is apparent(顯面易見(jiàn)的) in some of her poems. Her father died when she was eight months old and her mother was mad when she was five. Bishop was raised firstly by her mother's parents and then by her father's parents. This experience left her confused about belonging. She had no home and this was shown in her poetry. In “A Prodigal”, when the character in the poem makes up his mind to go home, there is a sense of pessimism for Bishop who has no home. The lack of a sense of home has contributed to her depression(消沉) all her life.
Bishop attempts(企圖) to make small, everyday experiences extraordinary in her poems such as “Filling Station”. In “Filling Station”, Bishop describes the beauty of a family filling station. Although it is “dirty” there is order in it. Simple family life is celebrated in it. She recognizes the value of home and beauty in everyday life, but she is only an observer of these. Distance remains between her and the family at the filling station.
Bishop's struggle to locate herself in the world is seen no more clearly than in “Sandpiper”. It deals with searching for something in a confusing world. She uses the metaphor(暗喻) of the bird which is “looking for something”. The “something” isn't specific(特殊的). It seems as if the bird doesn't know what he wants; the only certain thing is that he is searching.
Bishop's poems are personal on a more subtle (巧妙的)level, especially when her childhood, travels, etc, are taken into consideration. It is believed that Bishop is a complex(復(fù)雜的)poet who uses her poetry to find this feeling of belonging.
29.What do we know about Elizabeth Bishop's childhood?
A.She was born poor. B.Her parents didn't love her.
C.Her grandparents treated her badly. D. She lived an unhappy life.
30.When reading Bishop's poems, people can find her search for ________.
A.the true nature of human being B.a happy family life
C.the feeling of belonging D. parental love
31.Which of Bishop's poems shows her love for simple family life?
A.Sandpiper. B.Filling Station. C. Manuelzinho. D.A Prodigal.
32.Which of the following words can best describe Bishop?
A.Clever and strong. B. Gifted but pessimistic.
C.Unfortunate but kind. D.Creative and determined.

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops.
Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes“mindlessly”by taking down word for word what the professors said.
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers' report said,“While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears. ”
In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.
33.More and more students favor laptops for notetaking because they can ________.
A.get higher scores B.digest concepts better
C. write more notes D.understand lecture better
34.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be ________.
A.mindless B.tireless C.thoughtful D. skillful
35.The author of the passage aims to ________.
A.examine the importance of longterm memory
B.promote the use of laptops
C.explain the process of taking notes
D. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand

To be successful people
Here are some opinions about successful and unsuccessful people.
Make life plans and set goals
You can’t be successful without knowing where you are going. A life vision board, 10 years’ plan and daily goals are useful of the successful people. 36
Keep a “To-be” list for the future
A “To-be” list is a great way to plan for the future. I want to be an elected official in the future. I want to be the CEO of a public company. 37 Unsuccessful people have no idea what they want to be. How can you achieve success if you don’t know what you want to be?
Study every day
38 whether you are reading a magazine or a good book. You can learn and become knowledgeable as you read. While watching television may be good entertainment, you will hardly get anything out of TV to help you become more successful.
Want others to succeed
When you are in an organization with a group of people, in order to be successful, you all have to be successful. 39 If you wish for their failures, why even work with them at all?
Accept responsibly for your failures
Where there are ups, there are most always downs. Being successful persons means always having to accept responsibly for your failures. 40 It just puts other people down and no good comes from it.
A. Blaming others solves nothing.
B. Your failures help your successes.
C. I want to be a great father and husband.
D. We want to make our life plans and goal.
E. Get your vision and goals down on paper.
F. Studying everyday educates you on new subjects.
G. You need to want to see your co-workers improve and succeed.

Text 10
The day before yesterday, on Thursday, I lost my umbrella. It’s said that 7,000 people lose their umbrellas in London every year. And all these umbrellas go to the Lost and Found Offices. However, hundreds of years ago, only rich and important people used umbrellas in ancient countries like India, China and Egypt. These rich people didn’t use umbrellas in the rain. They used them in the sun. Of course, poor people worked in the sun, but they didn’t have umbrellas. The Chinese invented the first umbrella for use in the rain. Starting in the 16th century the umbrella became popular to the western world. Umbrellas appeared in Britain about 400 years ago. At first, only women had umbrellas. Men didn’t like them. In 1750, a traveler named Jonas was the first man to use an umbrella on the street in England. The first umbrella shop was called “James Smith and Sons”. The shop was opened in 1830, and it is still located at 53 New Oxford Street in London now.

Automatic dishwashers have been around for more than 100 years. It started in 1886 with Josephine Cochrane, a woman in Shelbyville, Illinois. She was a rich woman who could afford servants to wash her dishes, so she really didn't mind the work. What she did mind was that her servants broke the dishes. She hosted quite a few dinner parties, and after every party the servants broke more of her expensive dishes.
Finally, Cochrane took action. First, she measured her dishes and bent wire into racks to hold them. Next, she put the racks on a wheel in a large copper boiler. Then, the boiler sprayed hot, soapy water on the dishes as a motor turned the wheel. After a hot water rinse(沖洗),the dishes were clean!
Josephine Cochrane's friends were impressed with the machine and asked her to build more. After that, word got out fast. Soon hotel and restaurant owners who didn't like broken dishes also were interested. Cochrane then knew that she had a wonderful machine, so she received a patent from the government, which said that only the inventor can make money from an invention. Then in 1893 Chicago held a World Fair where inventions from all over the world were shown. Cochrane's labor-saving machine was a big hit. Her dishwasher won the highest award.
Cochrane's company came out with a smaller machine in 1914. It was supposed to be for the ordinary home, but it wasn't an immediate success. Many homes couldn't produce the extremely hot water it needed. Also, in most homes, dishwashing wasn't considered very difficult compared to most other housework. In fact some people liked to relax at the sink after a hard day! Sales of the home model finally picked up in the 1950s when people had more money and wanted to have more time to enjoy themselves. Now many homes have electric dishwasher that aren't very different from the one Josephine Cochrane invented more than 100 years ago.
56. What does the underlined words “After that, word got out fast.” in Paragraph 3 suggest?
A. The machine wasn't as efficient as described.
B. The invention drew immediate attention of the public.
C. Josephine Cochrane could no longer keep it a secret.
D. Josephine's friends soon began to talk about the new machine.
57. The smaller machine became popular only when______.
A. people had more relaxing jobs B. hot water was not needed
C. people's living conditions improved D. housework became easier
58. Compared with Cochrane’s invention, modern electric dishwashers_______.
A. cost less money B. are quite different
C. wash many other things D. are much the same

As a teenage rock fan, all Dennis Vorreyer really expected of the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago two weekends ago was the chance to see his favorite bands perform live.
But he and his father, Jeffrey, who accompanied him to the festival, signed up for Lollapalooza's text-message network, and thus learned about a guitar-playing contest taking place there. Dennis, 14, entered and won a new Gibson guitar. Tad Kubler, the lead guitarist for the Hold Steady, who was involved in the contest, then invited Dennis to perform with the band as it closed its set.
“Having your cell phone everywhere is important for everybody now,” Dennis said. “I never dreamed of playing Lollapalooza.” The modern mobile phone --- equipped with camera, Internet access and more--- has proved to be a liability for some performers, like Akon and Beyonce, whose regrettable moments were captured by fans and then immortalized on YouTube and similar sites. But for the fans themselves, mobile phones are becoming as important an accessory as an all-access wristband. Beyond using them to record a short souvenir, they are becoming a ticket to everything from free ringtones to VIP treatment.
On Gwen Stefani's recent tour, as many as 20 percent of the audience at some shows agreed to pay 99 cents for text messages and the chance to win better seats, according to the mobile marketing company Impact Mobile. At festivals like Lollapalooza, thousands of fans sign up to receive continuous updates from concert organizers about promotions and special events.
Even when there is no fee, the service comes at a price: fans must give their phone numbers to marketers. And purists --- and some artists --- disapprove of fans pecking out text messages or snapping pictures during performances. Still, the arrival of a new generation of phone-based activities could add a new twist to live events at a time when rising ticket prices have discouraged many concertgoers.
59. What did Dennis originally intend to do at the Lollapalooza music festival?
A. He wanted to keep company his father Jeffrey.
B. He expected to join in the performance with a famous band in the festival.
C. he wanted to see the live performance from his best loved bands.
D. He wanted to attend a guitar-playing contest held in the festival.
60.The underlined word liability in paragraph 3 here means___________.
A. trouble B. debt C. responsibility D. benefit
61.Why did some audience agree to pay money for the text message ?
A. Because they wanted to get better tickets for the concert.
B. Because they wanted to get the free tickets for the concert.
C. Because Gwen Stefani asked them to do so.
D. Because they wanted to have a good holiday
62. The author seems to believe that ____________
A. Dennis Vorreyer was fortunate to perform with the guitar band.
B. phone-based activities will become a turning point for the live events.
C. today cell phone is important and indispensable for everybody.
D. fans shouldn’t peck out text message or snap pictures during performances.

Cure for tiredness?
Staying up late is a potential battle between parents and kids. But the solution could be as simple as changing your meal time.
Researchers at the University of Surry, UK, found that delaying meals could help change one of the internal body clocks. Besides a “master” clock in the brain, there are clocks in other parts of the body. They are usually synchronized according to factors including light.
During the study, researchers tested 10 participants to examine the effect of changing meal times on their body clocks. The participants were given three meals ---breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the first stage, participants received breakfast 30 minutes after waking. Lunch and dinner followed, after 5-hour intervals. In the second stage, each meal was delayed by 5 hours. Right after each stage, blood and fat samples were collected.
Results showed that later meal times greatly influenced blood sugar levels. A 5-hour delay in meal times caused a 5-hour delay in the internal blood sugar rhythms.
The discovery showed that meal times are in line with the body clock that controls blood sugar levels.
This is a small study but the researchers believe the findings could help jet lag sufferers and night-shift workers.
In a study by the University of Surrey in 2013, researchers explored what happened when a person’s body was changed from a normal pattern to that of a night-shift worker’s.
After people work through the night, over 97 percent of the body’s rhythmic genes are disrupted(擾亂,使混亂).
These findings explain why we feel so bad following a long flight, or after working at night, according to Simon Archer, one of the study’s researchers.
“It’s like living in a house. There’s a clock in every room in the house and in all of those rooms those clocks are now disrupted, which of course leads to chaos in the household,” fellow researcher DerkJan Dijk told the BBC.
Changing meal times didn’t affect the “master” body clock --- the one controlling when we get sleepy --- but it can reset the body clock that controls blood sugar levels. This wouldn’t necessarily cure jet lag completely, but it might reduce the negative effects.
A study published earlier this year suggested that just a weekend camping trip could be enough to reset our body clocks. And now this latest research shows regular food schedules could play a key part too.
63. What did researchers at the University of Surrey find from their new study?
A. Connections between the “master” clock and clocks in other parts of the body.
B. Blood sugar levels are affected by when we eat rather than by our internal clocks.
C. A delay in meal times causes an irregular change in blood sugar rhythms.
D. Changing meal times can be enough to reset one of our body clocks.
64. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the new study, according to the article?
A. The interval between each meal being given was different.
B. Blood and fat samples of the two groups of participants were collected.
C. Each meal was served five hours later during the second stage.
D. Participants were asked to report their feelings after each stage.
65. What can we learn from the study by researchers at the University of Surrey from 2013?
A. All our body’s genes would be disrupted if we worked through the night.
B. Our genes often become less active after a long flight or night of work.
C. The disruption of one gene could lead to the disruption of other genes.
D. A disruption to the body’s rhythmic genes can cause people to feel bad.
66. According to the article, ______.
A. it’s impossible to reduce the negative effects caused by jet lag or night work
B. there is more than one way to reset body clocks
C. the “master” body clock controls all the other body clocks
D. a change in meal times can reset the “master” body clock

It was already midnight and I was walking quickly out of Recovery Room, knowing I had to be back early next morning. Though in a hurry, I noticed a lone woman with an anxious look on her face. As it turned out, her daughter-in-law had just been transferred to Intensive Care, so I decided to take her up there. Down the hall, she stated, “I bet you’re trying to leave, aren’t you?” I confirmed her observation, adding that it was quite all right. We soon arrived, and upon talking with the patient’s nurse, I was able to let her in right away. She turned to me and said, “Thank you, you will be blessed.”
The next day, on my way home after my day shift, I noticed a voice mail from my sister in Rochester, which gave me an uneasy feeling. I had to pull off the road as I listened to her message; “Mom had a stroke; she’s in the hospital and the Neurologist said it doesn’t look good.” My mind darted back to the words I had heard the night before as I cried out with anger; “This is a blessing?”
The following day I flew up to Rochester. My brother picked me up from the airport and we soon arrived at the hospital. I walked into my mom’s room and she looked as if I had never seen her before. Her usual bright smile was replaced with a look of emptiness. All at once the cruel reality of the signs and symptoms of a fresh stroke were there, but I wasn’t the instructor, I was just a family member. My mom seemed to recognize me, and I fought back tears as I told her how much I loved her.
Over the next five days, my mom made unexpected progress, as she began to speak a few words, slowly and almost painfully. With each milestone, it seemed the nurses and aides were almost as excited as we were. Everyone, without exception, treated my mom with kindness and compassion. I think the event that will stay in my memory forever occurred on my mom’s fourth day. It was time to repeat the swallowing study to assess if my mom could start eating. All four of us siblings hung together in the waiting room, nervous, our eyes shifting constantly to the door of 2607, anticipating and desperately hoping for good news. As her door opened, the therapist came out with a smile; we instantly knew she had good news, and we collectively breathed a sigh of relief. Five days after her stroke, my mom was ready for transfer to a rehabilitation facility, and I was headed back down South. With a very heavy heart, I said goodbye to my mom and the staff from the Stroke Unit.
On the way back home, I had plenty of time to think about my own experiences as a Recovery Room nurse. I could envision(想象)the smiles on so many of the faces of our patients as they leave our unit. I was also reminded of the fact that we as health care givers have a certain power: we can add to the stress of a patient’s hospital experience, or we can be the one ray of sunshine that leaves a smile on their face.
Truly, there will always be the pain of knowing that my mom had a stroke, but my memories will always be tempered by the thoughtful care she received in the Stroke Unit. I have since reflected on the words of gratitude spoken to me a week earlier by the visitor I took to the ICU. Yes, I was blessed; it was the kind of blessing that will warm my heart forever.
67. What actually made the author uneasy?
A. That she sensed something wrong with her mom.
B. That she didn’t believe the blessing she had heard.
C. That she had to listen to a voice mail form her sister.
D. That she must fly up to Rochester the next day.
68. By “I wasn’t the instructor, I was just a family member”, the author was trying to show ____.
A. sympathy B. anger C. helplessness D. respect
69. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Stroke recovery usually takes five days.
B. Her mother’s case was beyond expectation.
C. The author has been mentally prepared.
D. Empathy (共鳴) with patients makes a difference.
70. According to the passage, the author ____________.
A. doesn’t think a blessing was useful in real life as it didn’t protect her mother from a stroke.
B. believes she did get the blessing from the visitor.
C. believes everyone should work hard to get blessings from others.
D. thinks health care givers should give their patients blessing so as to make them smile.

Digitalization could Pay Off in Health and Sustainability
With technology permeating (滲透) everything we do, it has led to a significant transformation in the workplace --- specifically, how, where, who is working and what work employees do. The speed of change across industries has also caused greater uncertainty as many businesses rethink the way they manage their talent and real estate.
For one, automation and artificial intelligence will change many job functions---particularly jobs and tasks that are manual or process driven. Research has found that the future workforce will be divided into three parts;core employees, freelancers(自由職業(yè)者)and consultants.Core employees will be concentrated in smaller and fewer locations, ideally in central business districts with transportation and amenities(便利設(shè)施) concentrated nearby ---reducing their energy and resource usage. This smaller core workforce could mean smaller office footprints requiring less energy from power and less waste produced. In parallel, the appearance of the “liquid workforce”--- freelancers, consultants and more --- means potentially less commuting(通勤) and perhaps a cleaner way of working. The need for flexibility to accommodate the uncertain operating environment and more project-based work could require possibly less material and waste in the building process.
We’ve seen how many forward-thinking organizations have already adopted more efficient real estate management in the form of smart buildings and smart offices. This is essentially powered by the Internet of Things(物聯(lián)網(wǎng)) to drive efficiency and real-time optimization (最優(yōu)化)of building operations such as automatic monitoring and optimization of air conditioning
--- of particular interest in Asia, where indoor as well as outdoor air quality is a long-time issue.
Some features of smart buildings and workplaces also announce a shift to a less paper-based workplace. Companies are also accepting a whole view of sustainability. They ’re thinking about more than cost-savings or making the most of space. They are considering creating a healthy, fulfilling, and productive environment for employees.
We now speak about healthy buildings instead of simply sustainable ones. In fact, the World Green Building Council now promotes the concept of healthy green buildings---buildings that are not only environmentally sensitive but also provide for the well-being of staff. For instance, buildings with more access to nature and greenery make a significant difference to workers. A survey done last year found that over 90% of those surveyed felt more productive and creative with access to fresh air, indoor light, healthy food, fitness centers and even mental health services.
Overall, the drive towards a digitized workplace and improved employee experience could just lead us to a healthier, happier life and a more sustainable future.

Scientists have observed that humans experience happiness from a wide range of stimuli(刺激), from traveling to an ideal destination to redecorating one’s home or from winning a game of soccer to eating a delicious meal. Simply watching a favorite television show or laughing at a funny joke can lift a depressed mood. While the happiness produced by such experiences tends to be short lived, a wide social network does promote a more long-lasting state of happiness as a lifestyle.
Surprisingly, income is not a primary factor in determining a person’s level of happiness once the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter have been met. More important is one’s social network. Being socially active may be more effective in increasing one’s immunity(免疫力)to illness than a vaccine. Misery may love company, but so does happiness, and having close friends and family is vital to one’s overall level of happiness. Even sharing one’s home with an animal companion can make a person happier.

書(shū)面表達(dá)
Scientists have found that although various factors contribute to humans’ happiness, it is one’s social network, rather than one’s income, that plays an important role in promoting the long-lasting state of happiness.
Personally, happiness means achieving success after constant efforts. Take my participation in an English speech competition for example. Initially, I was lacking in confidence in my oral English. However, I held the belief that practice makes perfect. So, I kept practicing speaking English as long as two hours every day and consulted my English teacher about my pronunciation. Finally, my efforts paid off. When I was awarded the first prize, I felt a strong sense of happiness.
Faced with huge pressure from our study, we should do something to promote our sense of happiness. First, we should set a clear goal and keep it in mind. In addition, we can build friendships with optimistic people and move forward with their support.

Text 1
W: Hello, this is Dr. Maxwell’s office. My name is Tami. How may I direct your call?
M: I’d like to speak with Alison Simpson, please. (1) She’s a nurse there, but I believe she’s on her break now. It’s about our son Jimmy.
Text 2
M: What time is your flight today?
W: Well, it was supposed to leave at 2:15 p.m., but the airline just called and told me it was delayed until 7:15 p.m. At least this way, I can take my time and have lunch at home. (2)
Text 3
W: You like reading a lot, don’t you?
M: Yeah, I find it very relaxing. The one I’m reading now is really exciting. (3)
W: It’s that good, huh?
M: Oh, yeah. Ever since I started reading it, I haven’t been able to put it down.
Text 4
W: I’m sorry to call so early, but I wanted to let you know I’ve come down with something and won’t be able to come into work today. I should be fine by tomorrow afternoon.
M: No problem. We’re having an office party tomorrow night, so I hope you’re well enough to come! (4)
Text 5
W: Bradley, this coffee tastes a little strange. What did you put in it?
M: It’s actually what I didn’t put in it, Rachel! We consume away too much sweet stuff these days. (5) It’s time for us to get back to natural flavors, don’t you think?
Text 6
W: I’m here to pick up the flowers for Anna.
M: I’m sorry, but those won’t be ready for another two hours. (6)
W: She’s getting married in two hours! I need time to bring them back so that I can set them up before the guests come. (6) (7)
M: We haven’t even started putting them together yet. We told you on the phone they’d be ready by noon. It’s only 10:00. (7)
W: Is there another flower company that can deliver them in the next thirty minutes?
M: I doubt it. Flower companies don’t normally do rush orders.
Text 7
W: It’s nice and quiet out here in the countryside.
M: My grandpa used to take me fishing here when I was five.
W: My parents never took me anywhere when I was little. I guess we went to Los Angeles to visit my aunt and uncle a few times when I was in sixth and seventh grade. (8) But other than that, we just stayed at home.
M: It’s important to slow down and breathe some fresh air once in a while.
W: Absolutely. So, what’s the plan for the rest of the day?
M: I figured we could go hiking and then have a picnic on the top of the hill. (9)
W: Awesome! (9)
Text 8
M: So, what do you want to study when you go to college, Megan?
W: I’m not sure, Mr. Sanders. My dad would be excited if I studied medicine, but that sounds too difficult. I’ve always been interested in art, but I’m not sure if I want to be a professional artist.
M: Well, you could study art history. That was my wife’s major, you know.
W: Really? What did you major in?
M: Oh, I always wanted to be a businessman, so that’s what I did in college. (10) It’s not for everyone, but I liked it. I wish I had taken some other classes, though. If you have a chance to learn about a bunch of different things and then make a decision, I think that would be your best bet. (12)
W: That’s good advice, Mr. Sanders. Thanks!
M: My pleasure. If you want to talk more, come next door anytime you want. (11)
W: I sure will. Thank you!
Text 9
M: OK, your bill comes to thirty-six dollars.
W: Well, I never carry cash on me any more. Can I just Venmo it to you?(13)
M: What does that mean?
W: Venmo is an app that you download for your smartphone. (13) It connects to your bank or a credit card, and you can transfer money to other people in about ten seconds.
M: What? That’s fast! I’ve used PayPal before, but it sometimes takes several minutes for the transfer to be completed. (14) Plus, they charge you a fee for sending the money.
W: Venmo is free if you use a checking account. But if you use a credit card, I think they charge you a small fee.
M: That’s cool. I never use my credit card, anyway. So, what can I do with the money once it’s there? Can I use Venmo at stores?
W: You still can’t use it at most restaurants and big chain stores, but a lot of smaller shops accept it. (15) It’s getting more popular all the time.
M: All right, how can I sign up for Venmo?
W: Download the app from the App Store, and I’ll email you an invitation to join. (16)
Text 10
Good morning! I’m Samuel Davis, and this is the ten o’clock news report. I hope everyone is having a fine Monday morning. It’s getting pretty wet out there, so grab an umbrella and stay dry! (17) I’m here today with Matt Miller, who has completed his 29,000-mile journey in just six weeks, with a total of 180 hours in flight. Beginning in California, he made twenty-five stops in fourteen different countries including England, Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Thailand. (18) His final trip was a sixteen-hour flight from Hawaii back to California, just half an hour less than his longest flight from Samoa to Hawaii. (19) Born in South Dakota, Matt is a freshman at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has said that as a child he was scared of flying. All of that changed when he received his pilot license at just seventeen. After that, he only spent a few years planning everything out before beginning his journey around the world. Matt is here with us today for an interview. Welcome Matt! First, why don’t you tell all our listeners about the craziest thing you saw during your adventure? (20)
