A vacation with your family is fun but loaded with responsibilities. If you are planning with your family, then you should keep certain things in mind to make your travel stress free. We bring tips to keep in mind while travelling with your family, which will ensure your travel free of hassle.
REACHING EARLY
Take off early from home. Reaching a few minutes earlier will save you the trouble of standing in long queue or rushing for departure. Keep your essentials with you. IF TRAVELLING BY CAR
Stack your car with extra jumper cables, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, and thermal reflective blankets. Plan ahead, unknown difficulties are unavoidable. Carry a map with you even if you have a GPS installed in your car. Do not always rely on technology.

A few months ago I decided that I was going to treat myself to a 4-day getaway from Los Angeles and visit Chicago. I got a free airplane ticket, but had to pay the hotel in cash, which 1 really couldn't afford. I found a travel website where a discounted 3-night stay was purchased from a recently opened hotel.
About three weeks before the trip, I had to regretfully cancel and only then realized the room, while transferable (可轉(zhuǎn)手的) to another person, couldn't be changed to a later date and wasn't refundable. For the next two weeks I tried selling it on Craig's list with no success. Five days before the "big weekend", I gave up trying to get any money back and decided I'd contact some acquaintances who live in Chicago and offer someone a free "staycation". After trying a handful of people, all of whom already had their own plans! I was determined to have the room not go to waste.
That's when it suddenly occurred to me that I was looking at the rooms in the wrong way. Instead of viewing them for vacation purposes, surely there must be a way to put them to good use, and that was when the idea that some sort of shelter might be able to use it. I eventually found one whose focus is aiding victims of domestic violence. This particular one was willing to listen to my out-of-left-field story and made it easier to transfer the rooms. The shelter was working with a desperate woman and her daughter, who were fortunately able to make use of the room. I was later told by the shelter “they had a blast”.
25. We can learn from paragraph 1 that the author______.
A. had a light budget for his holiday B. bought his flight using credit cards
C. planned to go on business in Chicago D. employed someone from a website
26. What was the author's first choice when he realized the situation?
A. Making the trip himself. B. Doing a favor to a friend.
C. Complaining to authority. D. Getting his money back.
27. What did the author finally do with his room reservation?
A. He sold it to someone on vacation. B. He donated it to needy strangers.
C. He put it off to a later holiday time. D. He used it for domestic violence.
28. From the underlined sentence in the last paragraph, we can infer that______.
A. the author was unhappy with the result
B. the program was shocked by the event
C. the women were grateful for the room
D. the shelter was asking for more rooms
C
It’s such a happy-looking library, painted yellow, decorated with palm-tree stickers and sheltered from the Florida sun by its own roof. About the size of a microwave oven, it’s pedestrian-friendly, too, waiting for book lovers next to a sidewalk in Palm Beach Country Estates, along the northern boundary of Palm Beach Gardens.
It’s a library built with love.
A year ago, shortly after Janey Henriksen saw a Brian Willias report about the Little Free Library organization, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit that aims to promote literacy and build a sense of community in a neighborhood by making books freely available, she announced to her family of four, “That’s what we’re going to do for our spring break!”
Son Austin, now a 10th-grader, didn’t see the point of building a library that resembles a mailbox. But Janey insisted, and husband Peter unwillingly got to work. The 51-year-old owner of a ship supply company modified a small wooden house that he’d built years earlier for daughter Abbie’s toy horses, and made a door of glass.
After adding the library’s final touches, the family hung a signboard on the front, instructing users to “take a book, return a book,” and making the Henriksen library, now one of several hundred like it nationwide and among more than 2,500 in the world, the only Little Free Library in Palm Beach County.
They stocked it with 20 or so books they’d already read, a mix of science fiction, reference titles, novels and kids’ favorites. “I told them, keep in mind that you might not see it again,” said Janey, a stay-at-home mom.
Since then, the collection keeps replenishing(補(bǔ)充)itself, thanks to ongoing donations from borrowers. The library now gets an average of five visits a day.
The project’s best payoff, says Peter, are the thank-you notes left behind. “We had no idea in the beginning that it would be so popular.”
29. In what way is the library “pedestrian-friendly”?
A. It owns a yellow roof.
B. It uses palm-tree stickers as decorations.
C. It protects book lovers from the sun.
D. It stands near a sidewalk.
30. Janey got the idea to build a library from ______.
A. a visit to Brian Williams
B. a spring break with her family
C. a report on a Wisconsin-based organization
D. a book sent by one of her neighbors
31. The library was built ______.
A. like a mailbox B. on the basis of toy horses
C. by a ship supply company D. with glass
32. What can we infer about the signboard?
A. It was made by a user of the library.
B. It aimed at making the library last long.
C. It marked a final touch to the library.
D. It indicated the library was a family property.

Visitors worry that London is an expensive city but there really are so many free things to do here. The following ideas should get you started.
All of London's major museums are free, but most offer some special exhibitions for a fee. My favorite is the Museum of London where you can learn the history of London from Roman times to today. And I love the Geffrye Museum which shows English domestic interiors and helps bring to life what it was really like to live in London.
I regularly hear people tell me the Queen Mary's Rose Gardens in Regent's Park is their favorite spot in London, and who am I to argue? I would also recommend St. James's Park as it offers one of the best views of Buckingham Palace. Hyde Park is enormous and Kensington Gardens nearby includes the ever popular Diana Memorial Playground and the Peter Pan Statue.
No visit to London is complete without seeing this military tradition. The Queen's Guard in London changes in the Forecourt inside the gates of Buckingham Palace at 11.30am every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Get there early and view the spectacle from outside the front gates.
Trafalgar Square is one of Britain's greatest visitor attractions and was designed by John Nash in the 1820s and constructed in the 1830s. This iconic square has many sights to see including Nelson's Column and the National Gallery. It is both a tourist attraction and the main focus for political demonstrations. Every December, Norway donates a marvelous Christmas tree, to thank Britain for liberation from the Nazis.
33. Where can visitors find the Peter Pan Statue?
A. in Regent's Park. B. in St. James's Park.
C. in Hyde Park. D. in Kensington Gardens.
34. Which of the following descriptions is True ?
A. The Queen Mary’s Rose Gardens is in Buckingham Palace.
B. Trafalgar Square is both a tourist attraction and a place for political demonstrations.
C. The Queen’s Guard changes inside the gates of Buckingham Palace at 11.30 am every day.
D. In the Geffrye Museum visitors can learn the history of London from Roman times to today.
35. The writer wrote the passage to ________.
A. compare some free places in London.
B. advertise some free places in London.
C. recommend some free spots in London.
D. expose some free places in London.
What A Real Leader Does
Is a leader merely a manager? What should we expect from our leaders? 36
Yes, we do need leaders. On our own, we lack the vision, direction, and strength to reach our goals. We were all in need of guidance when we were children—even the cleverest child could not possibly be expected to make certain crucial decisions. Once we become adults, with the capacity to reason for ourselves, we are facing so many pressures of daily survival that we rarely find time and energy to focus on life’s larger issues. And when we do, our emotions and subjectivity limit our vision and our movement.
37 When we are occupied with our self-interest—petty or great, a leader sends out a wake-up call, alerting us to seek the true priorities in life.
With so many people trying to be leaders these days, how do we recognize a true leader? To answer this question, we must step back and ask: 38
A true leader wants nothing more than to make people stand on their own, as leaders in their own right instead of trying to blind us with his or her brilliance, a true leader reflects our own light back to us, so that we can see ourselves anew.
The differences between a leader and a boss: A boss drives their employees, and a leader coaches them. A boss inspires fear, and a leader generates enthusiasm. A boss says “I”, and a leader says “we”. A boss places blame for breakdowns, and a leader fixes them. 39
Decide now, decide today. Are you going to be a real leader? Are you going to develop real leaders? 40 Remember, a leader with vision has a clear, vivid picture of where to go, as well as a firm grasp on what success looks like and how to achieve it.
A. A leader provides a new perspective, inspiring us to abandon our narrow field of vision.
B. This sense of urgency is just as important in a leader as a sense of vision.
C. And do we really need leaders in the first place?
D. Are you going to inspire and generate enthusiasm?
E. We have a CEO who can direct thousands of employees toward a single objective.
F. What is it that a leader is really trying to accomplish?
G. A boss knows how it is done, and a leader shows how it is done.

Dear Tina,
How are you? I am now back in China. I had a wonderful time in America, which I will always treasure.
First, I’d like to express my thanks for your hospitality and kindness when I was in America. It was so nice of you to show me around your school and introduce its history to me. Besides, the delicious food to which you treated me impressed me deeply. Your school is amazing in that it has not only a beautiful campus but also lively classes. Hopefully you can come to China some day and I have the chance to repay you in the same way.
Best wishes to you and your family.

So of course some other women said the same as her. Well, of course (12)I should have known that it would cause trouble saying something like this in the USA.
W: Yeah, you have to be really careful.
Text 9
M: Yes, madam? Can I help you?
W: Oh yes, please, but you're just closing, aren't you?
M: Well, yes, madam. The shop shuts in five minutes.
W: (13)I won't keep you long then. It was about some saucepans you had in your window last week.
M: Last week, madam? I really can’t remember which ones you mean.
W: Oh, they were lovely! Dark brown color, country-style you know.
M: That's strange. I don't recognize any of the ones we had from that description. Are you sure they were in the shop?
W: Oh, you must know the ones I mean. They were in a sale. A real bargain. Reduced to a quarter of the original price.
M: I'm afraid the sales are over now, madam, (15)and I know we sold out of all the saucepans.
W: I don't think you did, you know.(14)At least, my neighbor, Mrs. Cliffe, told me she saw some here only yesterday.
M: Well, it's all new stock in the window now. Er, well, madam, we were just closing.
W: Yes, yes.(16)Well, I will come by tomorrow.
Text 10
W: Moving away from newspapers, let's now focus on magazines.(17)Now the first magazine was a little periodical called The Review and it was started in London in 1704.It looked a lot like the newspapers of the time, but in terms of its contents it was much different. Newspapers were concerned mainly with news events but (18)The Review focused on important domestic issues of the day. Now, in England at the time, people could still be thrown in jail for publishing articles that were critical of the King. That is what happened to Daniel Defoe. He was the outspoken founder of The Review.(19)Defoe actually wrote the first issue of The Review from prison. You see, (20)he had been arrested because of his writings that criticized the policies of the Church of England, which was headed by the King. After his release, Defoe continued to produce The Review and the magazine started to appear more frequently, about three times a week. It didn't take long for other magazines to start popping up. In 1709, a magazine called The Tattler began publication. This new magazine contained a mixture of news, poetry, political analysis and philosophical essays.

◆The Necomimi
This is basically a pair of brain-controlled cat ears that allows users to express emotional states: relaxed, mild interest, strong interest and focus. This is made possible by a built-in machine that reads and translates emotions. It's a kind of technology that can also be useful for athletes to determine the best state for performance. The Necomimi can be bought for $49 through maker Neurosky's website.
◆The ostrich pillow
There are times when you're so tired that nothing is better than taking a short sleep. Whether it's being stuck at the office or on a long bus ride or at the library, the pillow is designed to put the wearer in soft supportive cushioning in any resting position. The strange-looking pillow has a hole in which to put your head, and a mouth hole designed to allow its wearer to breathe easily. It also has two side holes where you can store your hands. It is now being sold online for $99.
◆The Hovding bike helmet
The Hovding allows riders to get around easily. It's actually an airbag system that's worn around the neck, working only when there's a sudden shake or the unlikely event that may get you knocked off your bike. After winning the world's most famous design prize, the creators are developing a new and better model. Now the first-generation helmet is being sold at various sporting shops throughout Europe for about $500.

The treadmill desk on sale is the perfect solution for our increasing sedentary(久坐不動(dòng)的) lifestyles. Recently a study found those who spent three hours a day on a treadmill desk became healthier. Still, it shouldn't be treated as a panacea for not getting enough exercise.
Another study suggests that meeting the recommended amount of physical activity requires more exercises than walking. It's also recommended that treadmill speeds should be limited to around 2 miles per hour or less to make sure they can be used safely while working.

On a recent afternoon, some 60 years after they graduated from grammar school, Kathleen Rys, 72, and her sister Lorraine O'Kelly, 70, sat down and had a meal with a classmate, Bruce Smit, 71, for the first time.
In the 1950s, Lorraine and Kathleen Rys' family moved from Chicago to Monee. As new kids at Monee Elementary School, they soon found themselves on the outs with other students.
"I would be with the other guys and see Kathleen walking down the hallway, her head down, holding her books, walking slowly. And all of us guys would be flat against the wall until she passed. Then we'd burst into laughter. How rude is that? It's just crazy." said Smit, a doctor whose wife, Tammy, organized the meeting.
The women said none of the teachers cared about it. "We just kept it to ourselves. " Lorraine said.
Over the years, Tammy Smit said, "Bruce would just start to cry at times. He'd wonder what happened to the sisters, if they landed OK." One day a few weeks ago, Tammy took to the internet and found Mary O'Kelly, Lorraine's daughter, and offered to set up a meeting. The idea of revisiting the pain was not well- received by Kathleen, who had never married, let alone gone on a date. It took some convincing, but Lorraine finally got Kathleen to agree to meet with Bruce.
Bruce broke into tears. "I'm so ashamed, so embarrassed," he said. "But I'm so happy you're still here and that I can finally apologize. " He said he hopes his apology will encourage others to seek forgiveness for the pain they make on others. Lorraine said, "This is a beautiful thing. It's just wonderful that a person from 60 years ago can ask for forgiveness. It's like a miracle to us. It's a healing to us."
24. What can we learn from the first three paragraphs?
A. Kathleen made her classmates afraid of her at school.
B. Kathleen was once hurt by her classmates at school.

C. The guys’ apology.
D. Kathleen’s suffering.
26. How did Kathleen first feel about the meeting?
A. Angry.
B. Excited.
C. Anxious.
D. Unwilling.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Bruce was embarrassed for his apology.
B. The other guys apologized to the two sisters.
C. Bruce and the two sisters felt a sense of relief.
D. Lorraine thought the apology came a little late.

Many people have heard bee populations are declining due to such threats as pesticides(殺蟲(chóng)劑). And many understand bees are important to plant pollination(授粉). Yet, according to a study led by Utah State University ecologist Joseph Wilson, few are aware of the wide diversity of bees and other pollinators beyond such species as honeybees.
“The U.S. Postal Service recently put out its Protect Pollinator series, which features only the European honeybee and the monarch butterfly,” says Wilson, assistant professor of biology at USU’s Tooele campus. “A social media commenter observed that using these two species on a campaign to protect pollinators is similar to focusing on chickens to save birds. It’s a pretty good comparison, actually.”
Wilson, with colleagues Matthew Forister of the University of Nevada-Reno, published findings in the Sept. 5, 2017, online edition of Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
“In our recent survey, 99 percent of our respondents said bees are important, yet only 14 percent were able to guess within 1,000, the actual number of bee species in the United States,” he says. “Most people guessed around 50 species of bees, while the correct number is about 4,000 known species.” Further, when shown images of varied insects, many people were unable to distinguish bees from non-bees.
“A challenge with lack of knowledge about bees is you can’t protect what you’re now aware of,” Wilson says. “We could be losing species or causing decline and not even know it.”
Public education is key to encouraging conservation efforts, he says. “Because conservation efforts require substantial public support, it’s important that the public understand bees and what needs to be done to protect these species,” Wilson says. “Education is the key to understanding bee declines and protecting our pollinators.”
28. According to the text, bees function as __________.
A. honey-makers
B. pest-killers
C. producers
D. pollinators
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Wilson is in support of the Protect Pollinator series.
B. The commenter observed honeybees and butterflies.
C. People neglect many other pollinators.
D. Protecting chicken can help save birds.
30. What does the underlined word “substantial” in the last paragraph mean?
A. legal.
B. large.
C. minimum.
D. slim.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Not Only Honeybees
B. Protection of Honeybees
C. Growing Threats to Bees
D. Newly Discovered Bee Species

Money might not grow on trees, but it seems that furniture does! Gavin Munro, a UK-based designer, has come up with a brilliant alternative to cutting beautiful trees and converting them into furniture.
He first came up with the idea of growing furniture when he was working as a gardener in California and also made furniture with washed-up driftwood on the side.
After several attempts, he finally managed to develop a model chair using four trees. Munro is now tending to a small 2.5 acre “furniture forest” of 400 trees in a field north of Derby, England. He uses specially designed plastic frames to make young oak and ash trees into the shapes of chairs, tables, frames, or lamps.
A forest that grows furniture sounds like a setting right out of Alice in Wonderland, but there’s nothing magical about it, just a lot of hard work. The forest consists of rows upon rows of trees covered in blue plastic molds, converting them into furniture as they grow. Once they take the desired shape, they are cared for until thick, mature and ready for harvest.
After harvesting, each piece is planned(刨平) and finished to show off the wood grain inside. “It’s an art form in itself, keeping track of everything,” Munro said.
The entire process takes about four to eight years, resulting in fully functional, organic, eco-friendly furniture, and more long-lasting than anything else on the market. They are grown and grafted(嫁接) into one solid piece without any joints that loosen over time. As Munro puts it, “These pieces of furniture could last for centuries.”
Quality isn’t an issue with forest-grown furniture, but maintenance and scalability(可伸縮性) certainly are. For now, Munro expects to grow 50 pieces a year, with the first lot of chairs available for purchase in mid-2017, priced at $3,700 each.
31. The first paragraph mainly serves as _________.
A. introduction B. praise
C. comment D. background
33. Gavin Munro thought of growing furniture ______.

C. while serving as a gardener D. while growing up
34. What plays a key role in growing furniture?
A. Rich imagination. B. Hard work.
C. Large irrigation. D. Perfect design.
35. The passage is probably taken from _______.
A. a brochure B. a diary
C. a novel D. a report

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. __36__However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撐) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.
Brace yourself for impact (撞擊力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle,so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.
Undo your seat belt. __37__ Unfasten the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.
__38__ Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.
Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter¬intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.__39_
Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. __40__While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.
A. Open the window as soon as you hit the water.
B. Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.
C. It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.
D. Such accidents are particularly dangerous due to the risk of drowning.
E. In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
F. This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.
G. But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.

As is often the case, when people are attending meetings, having meals or waiting for buses, you can always find it addicted to their phones, completely ignore others.
This is really a common phenomenon in our life. The reason is because smartphones nowadays can be used to play mobile games but keep in touch with friends through QQ and WeChat. However, too many exposure to phones is bad for people in term of health. Moreover, people who were engaged in phones fail to communicate well those around them.
As far as I'm concerned, people should wise make use of their phones to help with their work and study. In the addition, they should care more about their family members and friends rather than smartphones.

One possible version:
Dear fellow students,
As you all know, our government is trying to make our city a National Civilized City. We hope we can also do our bits to help achieve this goal.
First of all, we should mind our language and be civilized speakers. Always remember to say “Please” and “Thanks” and don’t talk or laugh loudly in public. When seeing people in trouble, we might as well lend them a helping hand. In addition, be civilized pedestrians. We must obey traffic rules and never cross the streets when the traffic lights are red. Keeping our environment nice and clean is also advisable, which means we shouldn’t litter or spit in public places. Only by starting with the little things around us can we make a big difference to our city image.
Let’s take action now and make joint efforts to make our city more civilized.

A few days ago I was sitting in a Thai restaurant enjoying a meal when I got a phone call from a friend I hadn’t spoken to for a long time. Full of enthusiasm and excitement I talked slightly louder than usual and in Spanish, my mother tongue.
A few minutes into the call the lady sitting beside me got up, seemingly upset, and asked the restaurant staff to relocate her to a table as far away as possible from “this man who won’t get off his phone”
I sank in my seat out of embarrassment. I ended the call soon afterwards and felt the urge to go over and apologize. Before getting up I looked around to see where she was and I found she was, indeed, at the table furthest away from me. I noticed that the lady was alone and staring out of the window, looking a bit sad.
Right then I quit my plan for a conventional apologetic gesture and decided to conduct an experiment. Seeing those funny smile cards in my wallet, I took one out. When signing my check I asked the waiter to secretly charge the lady’s meal to my credit card instead of her bill.
I left the restaurant, letting the waiter know I would be back in a few hours to pick up my credit card. I returned later as promised, excited to learn the result.
To my pleasant surprise, things turned out the best possible way. A group of restaurant staff approached me with joy, telling me that the lady had dined there many times, but they had never seen her smile and laugh like she did upon receiving the smile card and the $0 check.
24. Why did the lady ask the restaurant staff to relocate her?
A. She didn’t understand Spanish.
B. She preferred to stay on her own.
C. She wanted to sit beside the window.
D. She felt bothered by the author’s phone call.
25.What did the author want to do first after he ended his phone call?
A. Apologize to the lady. B. Pay for the lady’s meal.
C. Conduct an experiment. D. Give the lady a smile card.
26. According to the text, the lady_______.
A. was unfriendly to others
B. was too poor to afford a meal
C. was not happy deep in her heart
D. was particular about where she sat
27. What is the best title fir the text?
A.A poor lonely lady B.A smile card apology
C.An improper phone call D.An unpleasant experience
C
Speaking many languages fluently is generally considered cool yet difficult to achieve, especially if second, third and fourth languages are acquired later in life. As an advocate of language learning, I of course agree that it’s cool, but I challenge the assumption that it’s difficult.
My name is Luca Lampariello. Aged 35, I speak 11 languages fluently. For learning a language, motivation is fundamental. Heaps of books and hours of study are nowhere near enough. It’s about travelling to remarkable places, meeting inspiring people, enjoying delicious food and starting many journeys of self-discovery. I find my motivation to learn more languages from these experiences, the experiences that these languages make possible.
I still remember that English was already a world language by the time I turned 10 in 1991. Its study was compulsory. I struggled at first. I didn’t like the teacher, grammar explanations confused me, and the material was dull. I thought I’d never learn it. Then my parents decided to hire a private English tutor. I was 13 and she was wonderful. She didn’t simply instruct me in the language, but helped me discover it--she set me on the right path to learning and, most importantly, learning to love the language.
I started reading s lot of books in English. My aunt bought the The Hardy Boys for my birthday and after that there was no looking back. The combination of reading books, watching movies every day and talking to my tutor once a week for two years worked wonders. By the age of 15, I was fluent in English and in possession of a thick American accent.
28. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A. To challenge the assumption is difficult.
B. To learn different languages is not that difficult.
C. It’s difficult to acquire four languages later in life.
D. It’s necessary to advocate people to learn languages.
29. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Speaking languages fluently.
B. Learning a language.
C. Reading many books.
D. Studying for hours.
30. Why does the author suggest travelling to many places?
A. To enjoy delicious food.
B. To enjoy beautiful scenery.
C. To meet various kinds of people.
D. To find motivation for language learning.
31. What can we learn from the author’s experience of learning English?
A. Having a private English tutor is important.
B. An English teacher shouldn’t explain grammar.
C. Leading learners to the right learning path matters most.
D. It’s difficult for English learners to choose learning material.
D
In today’s American, if you spend much time with educators and policy makers, you’ll hear a lot of the following words: “standards” “results” “skills” “self-control” and so on. A look at what goes on in most classrooms these days makes it clear that when people think about education, they are not thinking about what it fells like to be a child, or what makes childhood an important stage of life in its own right.
The thing that set children apart from adults is not their ignorance, nor their lack of skills. It’s their ability for joy. Becoming educated should not require giving up joy but rather lead to finding joy in kinds of things; reading novels instead of playing with small figures, conducting experiments instead of sinking cups in the bathtub, for example. In some cases, schools should help children find new, more grown-up ways of doing the same things that keep them joyful; making art, making friends, making decisions, etc.
However, many of the assignments and rules schools come up with treat pleasure and joy as the enemies of competence and responsibility. Children should learn to delay pleasure and joy so that they can pursue abstract goals, like going to college. Not only is this a boring and awful way to treat children, but it can’t be forced to think carefully, enjoy books, or digest complex information.
Building on a child’s ability to feel joy, rather than pushing it aside, would require a shift in the education world’s mindset(思維模式). instead of trying to get children to work hard, why not focus on getting them to take pleasure in meaningful, productive activities, like working with others, exploring ideas, and solving problems? These focuses are not different from the things in which they delight.
Joy should not be trained out of school or left for after-school programs. It doesn’t run counter to the goals of public education. It is, in fact, the primary condition.
32. Many of the assignments and rules of schools are considered_________.
A. too abstract for children to understand.
B. reasonable to achieve educational goals
C. to set studying against pleasure
D. To focus on children’s joy
33. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Educators are thinking about school education in a proper way.
B. The ability to feel joy often differs from the competence to study.
C. Having children work requires changing educators’ mindset.
D. Education should help children find joy in more grown-up ways.
34. The underlined expression “run counter to” in the last paragraph probably means________.
A. keep back
B. go against
C. make for
D. approve of
35. The author of the passage intends to ________.
A. discuss where education leads
B. indicate joy is what schools lack
C. question children’s ability to feel joy
D. prove activity creates responsibility

Parents are always told to control the amount of time their children spend using phones. 36
Researchers studied 55 parents, while they were eating in a fast restaurant with their children. They found that one in three parents used their phones during the meals. Parents, who were busy with their phones, seemed to have more negative communication with their children.
37 They studied five different acts from parents who didn’t use their phones at all during the meals, parents who put their phones on the table but didn’t use them, parents who used their phones now and then, parents who used their phones at the end of the meals, and those who used their phones during the whole time of the meals. 38 More than 15 percent used their phones towards the end of the meals while the children were still eating, and continued using them until they left the restaurant.
It’s reported that young children use eye contact with their parents to form a good relationship and learn about the world. 39 When parents spent a long time looking at their phones, their children would be upset. Reducing this face-to-face contact could cause problems with further development and reduce the level of relationship between a parent and a child.
This is the first study to examine how children behave when their parents are using their phones. 40 More work needs to be done to find out how to improve the relationship between parents and children.
A. The researchers think it is just the beginning.
B. But their own habit of using phones could be bad, too.
C. It is necessary for parents to spend time accompanying them.
D. Almost 73 percent of the adults used their phones at least once during the meals.
E. Dr. Radesky and her team observed parents’ behavior to see them in a “real-life setting”.
F. Little eye contact and communication can reduce the close relationship with the children.
G. So the more eye contact their parents use, the more chances the children have to succeed.

M: Hello, everyone! My name is Harry Marshall, and I want to tell you about my recent school trip to a place called Markham. Our teacher, Mr.Griffiths, who actually teaches us maths, is also really interested in geography, so he wanted to take us there—and he thought we'd get material for other subjects like art and photography, too.
I was surprised to find that the cave we were in was completely dry, apart from a stream that ran right through it, which I wanted to examine a bit more closely. And there was also a waterfall that dropped into a black hole at the back of the cave.Needless to say(不用說(shuō)), no one really wanted to explore that part. The guide also asked us what different shapes we could see in the rocks. Many people thought one rock was shaped like a snake, and several in my group thought they saw a horse in another rock, but I didn't manage to see anything more like a rabbit.
The final part of our visit was to an exhibition about the history of the caves. We saw videos about how the caves were explored, and photos of the brave divers who first went into the caves. But I was even more impressed by the machines we were shown. They really brought the history of the place to life for me.
