第二部分:閱讀理解(共兩節(jié),滿分40分)
第一節(jié)(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)
閱讀下面短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D四個選項中選出最佳選項。
A
The British live on a small island. They are surrounded by the sea, so it is not surprising that the sea has always played an important role in their lives. After the development of large, ocean- going sailing ships in the fifteenth century, the sea became even more important to the country's development. Ships setting sail from England determined to extend Britain's territories, its wealth and its knowledge of the world.Ships returned to England bringing goods, people and new ideas from foreign places. By the nineteenth century, Britain had the largest, most powerful navy in the world.
The great sailing ships were so much a part of British life that they even affected the language. Many English expressions we use today were originally nautical(航海的)terms, although most people no longer realize this. For example, people commonly describe an honest and fair business deal as being"above board".This expression was originally used in sailing ship times when secretive, dishonest ship's business would becarried out below decks( i. e. below the boards)out of public view. On the other hand, honest business was always conducted on deck (above the boards), in the open where everyone could see what was going on.
"Pipe down!", meaning "Be quiet!",is another common expression that has nautical origins. The ship's boatswain(水手長) would blow a whistle,or pipe, at the end of the day to indicate(表明) to the sailors it was time to quieten down and go to sleep.
Most native English speakers have heard the expression "not enough room to swing a cat," but few know that the“cat”does not refer to a small furry animal with four legs and a tail. The"cat"is actually a short form of"cat of nine tails"...a whip with nine, knotted(打結(jié)的) tails. A boatswain needed a lot of space in order to swing the whip properly when lashing(鞭打) a poor sailor under his control!
21. The British have been strongly influenced by thesea because
A. they live on an island surrounded by the sea
B. they occupied more land around the world
C. they got more wealth from the sea
D. they had the largest navy ever
22. If someone is open and above board, it means he is
A, secretive B.cheerful C. honest D. dishonest
23.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Sailors will be whipped if they do business below decks.
B. Sailors need to go to sleep when they hear a whistle.
C. A poor sailor may be whipped nine times a day.
D. There is no spare room to raise cats on ships.
24. The passage is mainly about_________.
A. The business on British sailing ships
B. The sailing history of English
C. The sailing story of British sailors
D. The influence of British sailors’ language on English

Richard:As Jon Franklin, reporter, author and teacher, said,“Back when I first started,I thought intelligence was the most important attribute a reporter could have.I have since changed my mind. You do have to be intelligent, but the big thing is courage.Courage to open your mind and let the whole confusing world in.Courage to always be the ignorant one,on somebody else’s turf.Courage to stand corrected.Courage to take criticism.Courage to grow with your experiences.Courage to accept what you don’t understand. Most of all, courage to see what is there and not what you want to think is there.”

Three experimental fields of seawater rice were harvested in China on Wednesday, a further step toward its future commercial use. Also known as saline-alkali tolerant rice(耐鹽堿水稻), seawater rice is designed to grow in tidal flats or other areas with heavy salt content and has been developed by plant-breeding experts through crossbreeding(雜交育種) and other technologies.
One type of seawater rice growing in Qingdao's Chengyang district, Shandong province, yielded 3.9 metric tons per hectare, experts announced. Once widely planted on a large scale, the yield could be much higher.
The Qingdao Saline-Alkali Tolerant Rice Research and Development Center, led by famous Chinese agricultural scientist Yuan Longping, was established three years ago. It set itself a three-year target of developing a kind of salt-resistant rice strain capable of yielding 4.5 tons a hectare, which would guarantee growers the minimum acceptable level of profit. The average rice yield in China is 6.75 tons a hectare.
Planting in the experimental field in Chengyang district and five other plots of saline-alkali land started at the end of May. The five other plots were in Dongying, Shandong province; Wenzhou, Zhejiang province; Yan'an, Shaanxi province; Kashgar, in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region; and Daqing, Heilongjiang province. The sites represent actually every type of saline-alkali land in China and researchers aim to cultivate different strains able to cope with different climate, salinity and soil structure conditions.
The test crops in Kashgar and Daqing were also harvested on Wednesday. In Kashgar, the yield reached more than 7.5 tons per hectare, according to experts' tests, much higher than expected. The harvest in Kashgar was satisfactory. The result means it is possible to plant such salt-resistant rice in southern Xinjiang in the future. Xinjiang has about 2 million hectares of saline-alkali land that have the potential to be planted with salt-resistant rice, and if it is widely planted, it will substantially improve rice production in the region.
The seawater rice strain grown in Daqing only yielded 3.1 tons per hectare. A live video clip on Shandong TV showed growers appearing a little disappointed by the result, as they hoped the experts' efforts would boost production. The water and soil conditions at the site were not ideal, and the pH level was extremely high.
28. Which is the main feature of seawater rice according to the text?
A. It has a shorter growing period.
B. It is a kind of highly productive crop.
C. It can grow in the soil with high salt content.
D. It is the combination of many technologies.
29. How much rice does a farmer harvest at least to meet the cost?
A. 3.9 tons a hectare. B. 4.5 tons a hectare.
C. 6.75 tons a hectare. D. 7. 5 tons a hectare.
30. The researchers chose the experimental fields according to
A. the distance between them.
B. the type of the soil and climate.
C. the local governments' support.
D. the local agricultural conditions.
31.What can we infer about the seawater rice from the last paragraph?
A. The seawater rice is not fit for all kinds of saline-alkali soils.
B. It is impossible for the seawater rice to have a good harvest.
C. Growers from Shandong were a little disappointed by the result.
D. The output of the seawater rice grown in Daqing is the lowest.
32. What is the text mainly about?
A. The research on the seawater rice.
B. The new development of the seawater rice.
C. The final result of the rice grown by crossbreeding.
D. The new contribution of Yuan Longping.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.36Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread.37
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.38If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
39Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.40At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A. Everyone was new to the network once.
B. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.
C. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
F. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
G. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.

On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one-kilometer swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove, off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and Speedos!
Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystem with their large diversity of marine life. When asked why he doesn’t wear a wetsuit, Lewis says, “I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I’m asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message.”
It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius . He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.
Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.
This is not the first time that Lewis has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.
24. Why did Lewis Pugh swim without a wetsuit?
A. To swim faster. B. To show his bravery.
C. To build up his body. D. To win public attention.
25. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. One must be fully prepared.
B. One should be expert at swimming.
C. One should be ready to take on challenges.
D. One must be used to long-distance swimming.
27. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Lewis Pugh: swimming for a cause
B. How to survive a swim in cold waters
C. How to prepare for extreme swimming
D. Lewis Pugh: achieving the impossible

For environmental reasons, Britain will ban all new petro-and diesel-powered vehicles from its roads beginning in 23 years, a government report says.
The plan, expected Wednesday, aims to start removing petrol and diesel engines in 2040. It follows a similar official statement in France and comes after the British government was ordered by the High Court to develop new plans to reduce NO2 in the air. Judges ruled that previous clean-air plans were not enough to meet European Union pollution limits in the coming years.
Britain’s government has said the poor air quality has an unnecessary and avoidable negative effect on citizens’ health, and costs up to $ 3.5 billion in annual lost productivity.
Part of the new plan involves an offer of $ 260 million to local governments to change rules where vehicle emissions(排放) are over EU standards. Ideas so far include changing road layouts, reprogramming traffic lights and charging a fee for the oldest and most polluting cars on the road.
The plan also includes $1.3 billion for government purchase of extreme-low-emission vehicles, nearly $ 130 million to improve infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations and $ 378 million for remodeling existing vehicles.
Climate change is also a reason for the plan to get these vehicles off the road. “We can’t carry on with petrol and diesel cars,” Environment Secretary Michael Gove said. “It’s important we all prepare for a significant change which deals not just with the problems of health caused by emissions, but the broader problems caused in terms of accelerating climate change.”
Gove added that local communities are partly responsible for coming up with ways to limit emissions, including possible limitations on commuters(上下班往返者) and the addition of cleaner mass transportation options. Local leaders are called on to draw up “appropriate plans” to deal with climate challenges related to emission, he said.
28. Why does the British government decide on this ban?
A. To focus on its citizens’ health. B. To follow in France’s footsteps.
C. To promote solar energy in transport. D. To respond to the court’s request.
29. Which measure may the British government take to achieve its plan?
A. Changing the way roads are arranged. B. Removing old and high-emission vehicles.
C. Spending some money on electric vehicles. D. Limiting the number of traffic lights.
30. What can be inferred from Gove’s words?
A. Convenient public transportation is badly needed.
B. United efforts are required to achieve the plan.
C. Vehicle emissions are the key factor in climate change.
D. Petrol and diesel cars may hold back economic progress.
31. What is the suitable title for this passage?
A. Practical ways to reduce vehicle emissions
B. Britain plans to take petrol and diesel engines off roads
C. The EU forces Britain to improve the poor air quality
D. Relationship between vehicle emissions and climate change

Skeptics are strange a lot. Some of them to admit the serious of human activities to the environment and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, nothing but bad news about the environment. The "eco- " brought on by the news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.
Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book, The Skeptical , declares that it measures the "real state of the world" as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets some of big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg's views are similar to those of some industry-funded organizations, which start huge activities through the to confuse the public about issues like global warming.
So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg's book go largely in the though his beliefs were to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the that "After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to down."
Such one-sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg's " for unexamined materials is ".
A eye is , and the should present information in such a way that could allow people to make decisions. Stage Fright
Imagine that you are an actor performing in a play for the first time. You have learned all your lines and you know where to walk on stage. Waiting behind the closed curtain, you can hear the audience whispering and taking their seats.
Then your big moment arrives! The curtain goes up, and the crowd falls silent. All you can see is the spotlight shining down on you. 36 The inside of your mouth is dry, and your hands are wet.
If you have experienced a moment like this, you know all too well what it means to have stage fright. It is one of the most common types of fear and tends to strike people when they find themselves at the center of attention. 37 People experience this fear when playing sports, giving a presentation, or even speaking in class. A person who suffers from stage fright may get sweaty hands, a dry mouth, a tight throat, or shaky knees. Stage fright is actually a form of panic, and these feelings are very real.
38 The experience differs from person to person, but the same chemical process occurs in each of us. In reaction to anxiety, our bodies produce a chemical that prepares us to either fight or run away quickly. Scientists refer to this as our bodies' "fight or flight" reaction. As a result, we feel great energy that makes our hands sweat, our hearts race, and our knees shake.
39 Practicing your performance and following some simple tips can help calm nerves and manage the feelings caused by anxiety. First, dress comfortably and appropriately. Second, before the performance, take deep breaths and stretch to help relax your body. Third, stay away from drinks that contain caffeine. 40 Instead, try a banana! Some doctors believe that eating a banana can help calm your heart and the rest of your body. Finally, when you look into a crowd, try to focus on particular people instead of the whole group. These tips have helped many people learn to deal with their fears.a
A. These might make your heart race even faster.
B. You don't have to be onstage to get stage fright.
C. Stage fright is part of the body's reaction to stress.
D. You try to speak your lines, but nothing seems to come out.
E. With practice, we can learn how to relax while playing sports.
F. The good news about stage fright is that here are ways to deal with it.
G. However, there is a time when stage fright prevents you from stepping onstage.

Monolog 10
Look at this picture. It’s the London Tea Trade centre. As you can see, it is on the North Bank of the River Thames. It is the center of an important industry in the ever yday life of the British people. Tea is the British national drink. Every man, woman and child over ten years of age, has an average over four cups a day, or some one thousand five hundred cups annually. About 30 percent of the world’s export of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest importer of tea in the world.
Now in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Centre before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea-tasters before they are sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work! Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on a long table. The tasters generally taste tea with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed, tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price for each tea. After that, they

The things that kids choose to play with can impact our Earth. The manufacturing of toys and games can produce harmful pollution and non-biodegradable waste, which is harmful for our planet. But some toymakers are creating items for kids that aim higher. They use natural or non-harmful materials, and find ways to reuse and recycle. Toys and kits (成套工具) can also teach kids about environmentally friendly solutions. Here are a few of our favorite low-impact, high-fun toys.

I arrived in this beautiful Spanish island at the start of September, full of enthusiasm and eager to start work as an English teacher. I sorted all the necessary paperwork out and moved into a flat of my own within the first couple of days. Great! Or so I thought. At 4 am and at several intervals after that, I was rudely awoken by the cock that lives opposite me. Fantastic! I now have 5 extra alarms every morning.
In the following weeks, I also started to notice a trend. Things in my flat started to break at the rate of one object per day, like the hot water, bowls, cups, shower, doors or glass shelves. Yes, I am clumsy but things just fell apart. If it wasn't broken, it would either be dirty or missing. Using my washing basket for the first time was pretty disgusting. When I took out my clothes, they were swiftly followed by a hundred or so bugs that were living in the bottom.
As for the general lack of equipment in the house, there was no oven, tin opener, sharp knives or potato peeler. It turns out making a burger from scratch wasn't the best idea. I have a small microwave and a grill. I thought the general understanding was never to put metal in a microwave but I went with it. Smoke soon started to appear. I was not quite sure if it was the burger or the grill but as soon as I opened the door, the electricity cut out. I spent the following 10 minutes in a dark, smoky room hunting for the power switch using the light from my mobile phone, which broke the week after and left me without a connection to the outer world.
Luckily, I'm now borrowing a phone and my luck has returned. No more things have broken (probably because there is nothing left to break). I've also realized that even if a flat looks pretty, it doesn't mean its contents work. I am also learning how to adapt to life with limited, broken utensils (廚房用具).

26. What happened when the author was making a burger?
A. She was seriously injured. B. She made a terrible mistake.
C. She broke her phone accidentally. D. She suffered a sudden power failure.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Remaining optimistic. B. How to choose a nice flat.
C. Learning to live in a new flat. D. Why living abroad is not easy.

Work started this week on next season’s flu vaccine, with experts working off forecasts about which types of the flu virus will be making the rounds. But don’t expect any improvements. Flu experts are already admitting that most vaccines will give at best basic protection, because they’re based on old-fashioned technology. It’s not a new problem, but one that the slow-moving world of drug and vaccine production seems helpless to improve upon.
Every flu vaccine is a cocktail, aimed at either three or four of the most common flu types. Flu vaccines must be recreated every year because flu viruses develop constantly in a process called antigenic drift. In February, global flu experts gather to trade notes on what viruses are circulating in different countries and to come to an agreement on which types the next vaccines should be made to target.
In recent years, flu vaccines have been based on H1N1, H3N2 and either one or two types of influenza B virus. Each of these has a “reference” type, which is used to make seed virus. Producers add the seed types to eggs and incubate (孵) them as the virus grows. Then they purify the virus, and either weaken it or kill it to make a vaccine.
Using eggs is a tricky (=difficult) and unpredictable process. Sometimes the virus doesn’t grow well in eggs, which can mean less vaccine than expected. The result is a flu vaccine that doesn’t offer much protection. “As long as we have eggs we are going to have this problem,” said Scott Hensley, a flu virus expert, “The only solution is not to depend on eggs.”
Flu is a major killer. The 2017-2018 season has been a severe one, hitting the entire U. S. with widespread influenza infection at once for weeks on end, and killing 97 children so far. Against this threat, even a less satisfying flu vaccine will definitely help. “Even when you have these mismatches it will not prevent infection but likely prevent disease severity.” said Hensley.
29.Next season flu vaccine fails to improve because ______.
A.it has offered the best protection B.experts can’t forecast the flu types
C.it is based on outdated technology D.experts are unwilling to respond to changes
30.According to Paragraph 2, flu experts ______ in February.
A.exchange views on the virus types next season
B.get together and make a deal on vaccines
C.sign an agreement on vaccine production
D.decide on how to circulate the viruses
31.The risk of using eggs to make vaccines may be that ______.
A. seeds are less likely to get protection B.viruses might not be developed as expected
C. there are not enough eggs to be used D.whether vaccines will grow is hard to predict
32.What message does the underlined sentence convey?
A.The U. S. is faced with serious flu attacks.
B.Egg-based vaccines are better than nothing.
C.There is something wrong with flu vaccines.
D.Flu vaccines can stop the disease spreading.

“While extroverts (性格外向者) often make great first impressions with their outgoing manner and lively personalities in interviews, that value and reputation at work diminish (削減) over time.” says Corinne Bendersky, an associate professor of management.
“Extroverts disappoint us over time when they're part of a team,” Bendersky says. “On a team you're expected to work hard and contribute a lot. But they're often poor listeners, and they don't collaborate.”
“On the other hand, introverts (性格內(nèi)向者) work hard on a team because they care what others think of them. They don't want to be seen as not pulling their weight or contributing 100%,” Bendersky says.
So while companies may be attracted to hiring extroverts because they impress managers greatly in job interviews, bosses also may want to consider whether the extrovert they are considering will be a valuable team player, Bendersky says.
Amy Jen Su and Muriel Maignan Wilkins, two writers, agree and say managers should recognize the strengths of introverted employees, such as their ability to put themselves in someone else's shoes.
“These team members are often easygoing, which can make them exceptional mentors (良師益友) to more junior staff or particularly good sounding boards when you interact with them in one-on-one situations,” Su says.
“Managers must try to help introverts find their voice,” Wilkins says. “Help them see that speaking up is not about self-promotion or being in conflict but rather about offering the team key insights, making better decisions or increasing the efficiency for all.”
What about those extroverts who never seem to be at a loss for words? Should managers cut them off ? Managers definitely should weigh in on how an extrovert is affecting others. Wilkins suggests saying something in private to make adjustments.
32. What do we know about outgoing people according to Bendersky?
A. They are good listeners. B. They are good at cooperating.
C. They often make great contributions. D. They tend to perform well in interviews.
33. Which can best replace the underlined part “pulling their weight” in Paragraph 3?
A. Trusting others. B. Making good choices.
C. Doing their full share of work. D. Trying to share their thoughts.
34. What is Su's attitude towards Bendersky's words?
A. Critical. B. Tolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
35. What does Wilkins advise managers to do?
A. Promote more introverts. B. Learn to work more efficiently.
C. Encourage introverts to speak up. D. Avoid conflict among employees.

One year ago, I was in great trouble. I worked hard at English and devote all my spare time to practise it. But I failed to pass the mid-term examination, which made me great disappointed. So I asked my grandpa for advice when I got to home. Hearing that I told him, he said, “To some extent, examination results sometime cannot reflect your study level. You can’t judge your progress by one examination.” He encouraged myself to work hard for long time to check my results. I took my grandpa’s advices. Now I realize that the process of learning is much more important and my English is much good than before. From my experience, I feel that we should listen to opinions from old people.

M: Don’t worry. The film will start in 45 minutes.
Text 2
M: Have you gotten your Christmas shopping done yet?
W: Almost. I got a watch for my husband, but I can’t seem to find anything for my dad. He would probably like a book or a case for his coin collection.
Text 3
M: Have you heard that all the international flights have been canceled because of the weather?
W: No, I’ve been in the meeting-hall all day.
M: Unfortunately, I found it out while waiting for the flight to New York.
Text 4
M: Hello?
W: Hi, David. You are very difficult to reach. I called you several times. But I kept getting a busy signal. Is your phone out of order?
M: No, not out of order. But we seem to have a bad connection on the phone line. I can’t hear you clearly.
Text 5
W: Would you close your books now? Please remember to write down your name and school number.
M: How long do we have?
W: 90 minutes. If you finish the paper earlier, you can leave the room.
Text 6
W: Have you chosen the music for the party yet?
M: I was going to just let people bring their own.
W: Oh, I don’t think you should do that. One person needs to be in charge. Otherwise people will start disagreeing. Sonia’s really good at music. You could ask her.
M: OK, have you got her number?
W: Yeah, it’s on my mobile. I’ll text it to you.
Text 7
W: You know, if we’re going to buy a water heater, we should talk about it. We could go to the mall tomorrow. They’re having a sale.

M: Hey, come and see my new computer. Look how fast it is.
W: Wow! I can’t believe it. I thought your other computers were fast!
M: Yeah. But this one is like lightning. And the picture’s so clear.
W: Yeah. You always have the latest, don’t you?
M: You bet. This machine is right on the cutting edge of technology. You wouldn’t believe how much I can do. Apart from checking e-mails and chatting, I can watch TV on it while surfing. And it’s not that expensive to upgrade, either. Uh, speaking of computers, how’s yours? Still like it?
W: Yeah, it’s fine. Thanks!
M: I know I gave you a good deal. It was only a year old. Still, are you sure it meets all your needs? Maybe you should think about upgrading.
W: You know me — the only things that I need a computer for are e-mails and word processing. I don’t think I’ll need a new one anytime soon.
Text 9
W: OK. They were the last customers, so we’re done for the evening. How did you find it?
M: I enjoyed it.
W: Oh good. I think it went really well on the whole and you’re very friendly and natural with the customers. And you serve the dessert quickly.
M: Thank you.
W: Well, there’re just a few little things. First, once people at the table have finished, can you just make sure you clear the plates as soon as possible? This way they can have a bit of space and have some time to just chat a bit.
M: OK. I’ll make sure I do it next time.
W: And um, it’d be really good that you could just try to keep the water glasses filled. Just fill them if you notice that they’re empty as you’re walking around or when you’re taking orders.
M: Oh, I thought if I do that, probably I’ll just interrupt them.
W: No, it’s fine if you can just very quietly go over and fill them. However, it gets easier as you go on. The first night’s always the most difficult one. You did really well.
Text 10
M: Attention please! Now I will give you a brief introduction to the Winter Festival. It is a free event for all people to enjoy, and is organized by a team of volunteers. The first Winter Festival was introduced the year before last. Sadly due to a lack of money no festival was held last year. This year the government may provide $15,000 to the festival. They also persuaded the businessmen around the town to offer the rest $5,000. There will be a free art exhibition on Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th December in the Center Park of the town. The opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and there is an opening night only on Friday, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Different from other exhibitions, this art exhibition is really a special one because the public will have the chance to watch the paintings which are from the town’s school. And all the paintings are created by the students.
It is great that the Festival is going to host a wonderful sound of music in the Main Exhibition Hall this year. This program aims to show some of the musical talents that we have in town. Everyone watching the performance had better not wear formal clothes, but fancy dress. And in the program, you will hear classical music, pop music, rock music and operas.
