高考優(yōu)美文章閱讀:never too late to become what you want to be

The first day of school our professor introduced a little old lady to us.

"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked later. She jokingly replied, " I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."

"No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we wouldleave class together and tolk nonstop. I was always listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to make a speech to our football team. I'll never forget what she taught us. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her note card on the floor. A little embarrassed she simply said, "I'm sorry. This whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began:" We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.

Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do.The only people who fear death are those with regrets."

At the year's end Rose finished the college degree. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral to honor the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

  高考優(yōu)美文章閱讀:Adrift

In 1982 Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He was floating in a life raft, alone. When three fishermen found him seventy-six days later (the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone), he was still alive.

His account of how he survived is fascinating. But the thing that caught my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, when there seemed no point in continuing the struggle, when he was suffering greatly, when his life raft was punctured and after more than a week struggling with his weak body to fix it, it was still leaking air. Giving up would have seemed the only sane option.

When people survive these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in similarly desperate circumstances give in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the guts to carry on in spite of overwhelming odds.

"I tell myself I can handle it," wrote Callahan in his narrative."Compared to what others have been through, I’m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, building up fortitude..."

I wrote that down after I read it. It struck me as something important. And I’ve told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming. And every time I’ve said it, I have always come back to my senses.

The truth is our circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. I’ve read enough history to know you and I are lucky to be where we are, when we are, no matter how bad it seems to us compared to our fantasies. It’s a sane thought and worth thinking.

So whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with a little more fortitude.

  高考優(yōu)美文章閱讀:Follow your dream

There was a young man, born in a poor family. As a result, the boy's high school career wascontinually interrupted.Once he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up .

That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detailand he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot housethat would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

He put a great deal of his heart into the projectAnd the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.On the front page was a large red F with a note that read,"See me after class."

The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after classand asked,"Why did I receive an F?"

The teacher said,"this is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.You have no money.you have no resources from your family. There's no way you could ever do it."Then the 1.teacher added,"if you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal,I will reconsider your grade."

The boy went home and thought about it long and hard.He ask his father what he should do.His father said,"look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However,I think it is a very important decision for you."

Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same page,Making no changes at all.hestated,"you can keep the F and I'll keep my dream."

Recollecting the story,My friend Monty and I are now sitting in his 4000-square-foot house

in the middle of a 200-acre house ranch. Two summers agothat same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on his ranch. When the teacher was leaving, hesaid,"lookMonty,I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher,I was something of a dream stealer.During those years I stole a lot of kids' dreams.Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours."

Don't let anyone steal you dream.follow you heart,no matter what.

  高考優(yōu)美文章閱讀:puppies for sale

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

  "Sure," said the farmer.

And with that he let out a whistle, "Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this One noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up.

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt.

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."

The world is full of people who need someone who understands.
