A few months ago I was at a bus stop in town in the evening. The bus came on time and I took the window seat. The bus route was by the seashore and I was enjoying the breeze (微風(fēng)) while watching the sea waves. After a few minutes the bus made its next stop. A young boy and a girl got on. They were standing on my left when the bus pulled off. I looked at them curiously and realized that all the window seats were occupied (占據(jù)). They could sit but not together. Suddenly a different wave passed through my body and my inner mind gave me the advice to get up. I got up and offered them my seat. The young lady smiled kindly and said thanks. I occupied another seat and we parted our ways. I don’t remember whether I got off the bus before them or not.

Months passed by. Suddenly one day while I was standing at the same bus stop waiting some time for the bus to arrive I heard a voice.

“Excuse me, Uncle.” I looked in the direction of the voice. It was a beautiful young lady.

Puzzled, I said, “I do not know you.”

She said, “Do you remember you gave us your window seat?”

Puzzled, I said, “Maybe, but what is so great in that?”

She said, “If you had not given your seat that day, perhaps I would have not sat with my friend. By sitting together it helped us bridge a misunderstanding that had been between us forever. Do you know we are getting married next month?”

“Good! God bless both of you,” I replied.

The young lady again said thank you and went on her journey. I realized the importance of giving that day.

  21. Why were the young boy and the girl standing on the bus?

  A. Because they wanted to enjoy the sea view.

  B. Because they preferred to stand.

  C. Because there were no empty seats.

  D. Because they couldn’t sit together.

  22. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph probably means that the author had a feeling that ______.

  A. he wanted to do something special

  23. The author’s act of kindness helped the young boy and the girl ______.

  A. begin to talk to each other again after a quarrel

  B. clear up a misunderstanding between them

  C. sit together and become friends very soon

  D. know each other and get married

This summer I went to Iceland with my family. I had a great time there.

  Day 1

Today we walked around the capital of Iceland. Reykjavik is a wonderful city filled with lots of history, shopping and delicious restaurants. There are ruins dating back to the Viking Era down Reykjavik’s oldest main downtown streets. One famous monument of Reykjavik is the large church built in the city center. The church offers a view of the city that is amazing.

  Day 2

We got on the bus for the Golden Circle tour where we went through the famous Thingvellir National Park, then on to the Golden Waterfall in the highlands and the Geyser (天然熱噴泉). The most amazing part of this tour for me was our trip to the Geyser. There were several active geysers that we were able to stand right near. The geysers went off every ten minutes. The hot water sprayed straight up and you could feel the heat. Hot underground water is one of Iceland’s greatest resources. Iceland has over 170 hot water pools that are open all year round.

  Day 3

Today we rode Icelandic horses. The Vikings arrived in Iceland more than 1,000 years ago, bringing with them their small Nordic horses. They are small, gentle, and friendly. Icelandic horses are quite a bit smaller than the horses I have ridden in Montana. I really enjoyed having the chance to ride an Icelandic horse. Doing sightseeing on horseback in Iceland was delightful.

  Day 4

We took our last walk around town and down to the Harbor. We stopped and bought our last round of souvenirs (紀(jì)念品), then took a taxi to the airport. I am really looking forward to our return.

Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables.

31 Make a study time and have it at the same time every day. This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.

Allow them to study in blocks of time, such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle. 32 Ideal(理想的)study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.

Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive activity. 33

You’ll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you’ve set up a good study time for little learners, set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing. 34 Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair.

35 This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input you give your children during study periods will help form a bond and help make studying enjoyable.

  A. Keep the atmosphere light and offer lots of encouragement, too.

  B. Instead, use TV as a treat or a reward when the homework is completed.

  C. Pick a place where your children can study properly.

  D. Finally, spend time with your kids when they’re studying.

  Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to express my sincere thanks to you for your great help with my English learning during the past year.

I can well remember that once I had much trouble in learning English. I couldn’t remember new words and phrases. What’s worse, I was afraid of speaking English. However, you advised me to read more English magazines and books in my spare time, and listen to English songs. At school, I try to communicate with my teacher and classmates as often as possible. With your help, I have made rapid progress in learning English. At present, I show great interest in it and my oral English has been improved a lot. In a word, as long as we practice speaking English more, we will have a good command of it..

I feel sorry that we have to say goodbye now. Thanks again and wish you a p leasant safe journey home.

  Yours,

  Li Hua

W: I’ve tried, but it doesn’t work. He never listens to me.What’s worse, he isn’t the only one that I cannot stand. The woman who lives across the hall often comes over to borrow things, but she seldom returns anything.

M: Then don’t lend her anything.

W: Now I don’t even open the door when she knocks, but it makes me uncomfortable. I’m afraid I’ll have to move again.

M: You can move in with my sister Susan. The girl Jennifer who was sharing her apartment has moved out, so she has an extra room now.

W: That’s great.Your sister is such a good girl. Everyone likes her. I’ll call her and move as soon as possible. After all, I need to sleep very well every night in order to do well in the coming exam.

Hi! I am a boy from England. I have a big family, my dad, mom, elder sister and younger brother. I’d like to tell you a little about our everyday life.

The day starts at about 7 o’clock when Dad and Mom get up. We have breakfast at 8 o’clock. After breakfast, my sister, my brother and I put on our school uniforms and go to school. Dad goes to work by car. Mom, my sister, my brother and I go to school by bus. My mom works in a hospital near our school. School starts at 9:00am and it is over at 3:15 pm. After we get home, my sister, brother and I usually watch TV. Dad usually gets home at about 6:30 pm. We eat dinner at about 7:00 pm. In the evening, my sister, my brother and I usually do our homework before watching TV again. Mom helps us with our homework. On Saturday, my brother goes to the football club, my sister goes to dance classes, and I go to the basketball club. On Sunday, we usually go to the park or movies together.

Knut lived in Berlin’s zoo. He was four and raised by zookeepers since a cub (幼崽) after his mother deserted him.

Now reports say the attention-¬loving polar bear was found dead in a pool in his cage at the Zoologischer Garten Berlin Saturday, with no immediate cause of death announced.

“This is awful,” said Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit, according to the Sydney Herald. “We had all taken him to our hearts. He was the star of the Berlin Zoo.”

Most reports say Knut was alone when he died, as visitors watched him suddenly fall into the water. The known news site TMZ.com carried news of his death and says People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ German branch had previously complained that Knut suffered a lot from his mother and other bears.

Knut was very famous to many people, only because he seemed to love the limelight (出風(fēng)頭). After his first performance at the popular zoo, he became its star attraction, raising much income for the zoo and producing toys, DVDs and more. He was not diagnosed as being ill at the time, reports say. An investigation (調(diào)查) into the cause of his death is underway.

To everyone’s surprise, his beloved keeper, Thomas Doerflein, also died at an early age. Doerflein died at 44 in 2013 in his apartment after he had fed the cub and slept by its side, but later was told no longer to play or wrestle with Knut. At that time Knut was becoming an adult polar bear and considered too dangerous to interact with closely. Doerflein reportedly suffered a heart attack. Knut acted unhappily after his friend’s death.

  60. We know from the passage that Knut ________.

  A. became a popular toy B. was well protected in the zoo

  C. brought in lots of money for the zoo D. was the only important cub in the zoo

  A. nobody saw Knut when he fell into the water

  B. Knut and his keeper loved each other deeply

  C. Knut and his keeper died of the same disease

  D. Knut’s mother and other bears were nice to Knut

  62. What would be the best title for the passage?

  C. A Popular Polar Bear Was Rescued in the Berlin Zoo

  D. A Popular Polar Bear Found Dead in a Mysterious Situation

“People should have one meat-free day a week if they want to make a personal and effective sacrifice(犧牲) that would help deal with climate change,” the world’s leading authority on global warming has told The Observer.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that people should then go on to reduce their meat consumption even further.

Pachauri, who was re-elected the panel’s chairman for a second six-year term last week, said diet change was important because of the huge greenhouse gas emissions (排放) and other environmental problems associated with raising cattle and other animals. “It was relatively easy to change eating habits compared to changing means of transport,” he said.

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation has estimated that meat production accounts for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. These are produced during the production. For example, ruminants (反芻動物), particularly cows, give off a gas called methane(甲烷), which is 23 times more effective as a global warming agent than CO2.

Pachauri can expect some opposite responses from the food industry to his advice, though last night he was given unexpected support by Masterchef presenter and restaurateur John Torode. “I have a little bit and enjoy it,” said Torode. “Too much for any person is bad. But there’s a bigger issue here: where the meat comes from. If we all bought British and stopped buying imported food, we’d save a huge amount of carbon emissions.”

Professor Robert Watson, the chief scientific adviser for the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, said government could help educate people about the benefits of eating less meat, but it should not regulate. “Eating less meat would help, there’s no question about that,” Watson said.

However, Chris Lamb, head of marketing for pig industry group BPEX, said the meat industry had been unfairly targeted and was working hard to find out which activities had the biggest environmental impact and reduce them. “Some ideas were contradictory,” he said. “For example, one solution to emissions from cattle and other animals was to keep them indoors, but this would damage animal welfare. Climate change is a very young science and our view is there are a lot of simple solutions being proposed.”

  63. What is directly related to global warming?

  A. Consumption of meat. B. Growth of cattle.

  C. Methane from ruminants. D. Processing of meat.

  64. Who holds a view opposite to the others’ in the passage?

  A. Rajendra Pachauri. B. John Torode. C. Robert Watson. D. Chris Lamb.

  65. It is implied in the passage that _____.

  A. we should try to keep away from cattle B. ruminants should not be left outdoors

  C. the meat industry will soon close down D. we must do our duty to save the earth

  66. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

  A. Less meat, slower global warming

  B. More animals, more greenhouse gas

  C. Less imported food, better our environment

  D. Greater diet change, smaller climate change

Bobby Qualls was shopping when he received a text message: Fire on Beechmont, one-story house, child trapped inside. “I was picking out gifts for the family our engine house adopted for Christmas,” remembers Qualls, who has been fighting fires in Memphis for 24 years. “I had this sinking feeling as I got in my car and headed over.”

The last time Qualls had been on Beechmont Street was to install smoke detectors (感應(yīng)器) at the Bateman-Tubbs home. He’d been on a secret task to see if they needed extra help during the holidays. There he discovered that the four Bateman-Tubbs children were sleeping on bare mattresses (床墊), and he found two of the boys playing outside in 30-degree weather with no shoes or coats.

Qualls learned that Leonard Tubbs was doing his best to make ends meet laying floors while Kimberly Bateman stayed home with the kids.

“When Bobby told me his team wanted to be Secret Santas and buy my kids toys, at first I thought we didn’t need any help,” Bateman recalls. “It really touched me. I told him what the kids really needed was warm clothes.”

That’s exactly what Qualls was shopping for on December 9, 2010: winter jackets for Christopher, seven; JoJo, four; Madison, one; and two-month-old Charles. While driving over to Beechmont Street, he dialed Bateman’s cell phone. She answered on the first ring, screaming, “The house is on fire—JoJo’s trapped inside!”

By the time Qualls reached the house, the family had gotten out, but their home was severely damaged. His coworkers had found JoJo hiding under a pile of clothes in a back bedroom. He had stopped breathing and had been given CPR(心肺復(fù)蘇) and rushed to the hospital. Qualls learned that JoJo was now on life support and might not make it through the night. He rushed to the hospital with Lt. Mark Eskew, who placed a stuffed teddy bear in a firefighter’s suit on JoJo’s bed.

“I just kept praying my little boy would open his eyes,” Bateman recalls. “There was nothing else I could do. They were pumping black and thick liquid out of his lungs and stomach for days.”

After a few days, though, JoJo regained consciousness, and the tubes were taken out of his throat. While he began to slowly recover, the local newspaper and TV stations got hold of the story, and the Secret Santa Plan of Qualls and his fellow firefighters snowballed. Before long, the fire station was overflowing with boxes of toys, food, towels, and clothes. People called, wanting to donate furniture and appliances (電器) too. By December 23, Bateman and Tubbs had moved their kids into a new rental home. By Christmas Eve, JoJo was ready to leave the hospital, and the firefighters were ready to deliver the family their very own Christmas miracle.

“These guys aren’t just firefighters,” says Bateman, “they’re our guardian angels. If they hadn’t installed a smoke detector that first day they came to our house, we wouldn’t have known when the fire started. Then they went the extra ten miles to give us a Christmas.”

  67. What did Qualls do after he received a text message?

  A. He drove to the burning house. B. He hurried to the fire station.

  C. He went to pick out gifts. D. He went shopping in Beechmont.

  68. Who saved JoJo out of the burning house?

  A. Bobby Qualls. B. Leonard Tubbs. C. Kimberly Bateman. D. Firefighters.

  69. We can infer from the reading that _______.

  A. JoJo is a naughty child B. smoke detectors are very useful

  C. Tubbs’ home is filled with gifts D. the fire was caused by the bare mattress

  70. The purpose of this story is to _______.

  A. encourage people to install smoke detectors

  B. advise people to take good care of their children

  C. ask people to give gifts to the firemen

  D. praise the firemen for their good deeds

Parents can help their seventh and eighth grade students stand out in and out of their English classroom by introducing them to newspapers. Newspapers not only offer information on current events, but they can also be used to test your child's knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and more.

Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How

Have your child read the first couple of paragraphs of a news story. Ask them to write down all of the important facts, such as who, what, where, when, why and how. This helps parents to see if their children comprehend the basic facts and information they read.

  Grammar

Parents can monitor a child's understanding of grammatical parts of speech (詞性) without a grammar textbook. Ask your child to read a paragraph in an article and then list a specific number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and the like, which serves more of a test of their grammatical knowledge. Encourage them to list each of these parts of speech in a paragraph. Then, reread the paragraph to see if they missed anything.

  Persuasion

Ask your child to select an advertisement from the newspaper. Have them investigate how specific words or phrases influence their feelings about a particular product. Then, encourage them to create an advertisement of their own for an item they do not like. Tell them not to show their true feelings and try to make people want to buy this unwanted item. After that, ask them to list the persuasive techniques used in their ad.

  Facts vs Opinions

Select an editorial for your middle schooler to read. Have your child divide a piece of paper into two columns, one marked fact, and the other marked opinion. Have your student decide which column it fits under. This will help your child better understand facts versus opinions. Another related exercise is responding to an editorial. Encourage your child to write letters to the editor or responses to editorials or other articles. Before your child sends his or her letter, check the opinion section to see what requirements there are.

  Headlines and Synonyms (同義詞)

Ask your middle schooler to rewrite a couple of headlines using the synonyms of the original words. Compare the headlines. Do the original versions or the rewrites sound better? This is a great exercise to help students learn synonyms and expand their vocabulary.

If you find your seventh or eighth grade child is struggling with these newspaper activities, it may be an indicator that they have fallen behind in their reading skills. These activities were designed with a seventh or eighth grader in mind; therefore, while they are educational, they should be more of reinforcement (增強(qiáng)) instead of a major reading challenge.

  Outline Supporting details

An approach to learning 88 students in seventh and eighth grades to newspapers can be helpful in learning English.

Newspaper 89 ● Ask students to read the first paragraphs of a news story and write down the important and 90_ facts to see if they can understand them.

  ● Have students read an article and list different parts of speech to improve their understanding of 91 .

  ● Select an ad and ask students to find the persuasive expressions 92

in it, and then create their own ad for a product they dislike.

  ● Select an editorial and have students 93 facts from opinions. After that encourage them to write a 94 to an editorial.

  ● Ask students to write a few synonyms and compare them with the 95

headlines to help them with their vocabulary expansion.

I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway.” David added:“I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement is a possibility. You never know when the market might die away.”

Today is Sarah’s birthday. She is seventy-five. We asked a few old friends to dinner.

Like most elderly people, I suppose, we spent most of the evening talking about old times. Thirty years ago, the village used to be a quiet place. Now it has changed. Every Sunday hundreds of cars pass through the village at what I think a dangerous speed. They make the village almost as noisy as the streets of a large town. As a boy I enjoyed riding on the backs of the farm horses. Things are different now. Today there are very few horses working on the farms. The farm workers today drive tractors, not horses. A man is not of much use on a farm unless he knows all about machines. Now almost every house in the village has a TV set . Is it a good thing for children to spend the evening sitting in front of a TV set? When I was young I did not waste my time indoors. I would spend the long summer evenings outdoors. I would play with my friends, go fishing or walk by the river. When my grandchildren asked me the reason why I haven’t bought a TV set, I tell them there are many books I still want to read. I can’t find time for both reading and watching TV.

Liverpool city council want to clear the city of fat pigeons. They say that people are feeding the birds, which makes them fat. The pigeons get bigger because their normal diet would consist of seeds and insects, not high-fat junk food they are eating in the city centre.

The council want people to know that everyone who feeds the pigeons is responsible for the streets being so crowded with these birds. They hope to encourage the birds to move away from the city centre and into parks and open spaces.

Ten robotic birds have been brought into the city centre to scare the pigeons away and visitors are asked not to give the pigeons any food. The mechanical birds - known as “robops” - will sit on the roofs of buildings. They can be moved around to different locations. They look like a peregrine falcon, which is a bird that kills pigeons. Are you truly happy? Do you eve r know what it means to be happy and what it takes to achieve happiness? 16 The following are a few tips that I follow to create happiness in my life.

  Dear Mr. Headmaster,

I am Li Hua, a student from Class 1, Senior I. I am writing to draw your attention to some improper behaviour among us students: littering and scribbling. It makes our school dirty and unpleasant, and does harm to the image of our school. I always feel ashamed whenever I see this. It is clearly not appropriate for a student to litter and scribble about. I wonder if the school could place more dustbins around and set up specific rules against such behaviour. At the same time, students should be encouraged to develop good habits and better behave themselves. I believe that, with the joint efforts of both teachers and students, our school will become a more enjoyable place in the near future. Thank you for your consideration. Yours faithfully,

  Li Hua
