In March 1987, I started a new magazine called Creating Excellence. It was a very proud moment for me. I’d worked hard for over a year to create it, and the premiere issue (首次發(fā)刊) was a real success.
Shortly after we had mailed 25,000 copies, I received one in the mail. But this one wasn’t as beautiful as the ones we’d sent out. It was marked in red ink correcting the grammatical errors (語(yǔ)法錯(cuò)誤) in it. A talented editor had read it carefully and found more errors than I could have imagined.
I felt abashed. A magazine called Creating Excellence should be perfect in its content (內(nèi)容). The stories were good, but the errors this woman had found showed that our magazine was far from being excellent.
At first, I was not satisfied with my editor for not having avoided the mistakes, and dissatisfied with the woman who seemed to have taken pleasure in pointing them out. Later, I was dissatisfied with myself for not having employed a better editor.
Then I realized that I had to face up to my mistake. I called the talented editor. I thanked her for taking the time to read our magazine so carefully. Painful as it was, I accepted responsibility for it.
Then I offered her the job of editing our magazine. The result was a great improvement in it; we could now be very proud of our magazine.
From this I learnt that an upsetting moment can be an opportunity to see the truth, and it can help to prevent one making the same mistakes, and to make "excellence" a reality.
25. From the first paragraph we learn that _____.
A. the author put little effort into her first magazine
B. the author’s job was selling magazines
C. the author was very satisfied with her work
D. the author experienced a total failure
26. What does the underlined word "abashed" in the third paragraph mean?
A. Excited. B. Embarrassed. C. Interested. D. Exhausted.
27. What do we learn about the woman who found the errors in the magazine?
A. She was causing trouble on purpose.
B. She liked pointing out the errors of others.
C. She contributed a lot to the success of the premiere issue.
D. She ended up joining the magazine team.
28. What do we learn from this passage?
A. Pride is the biggest enemy of success.
B. Success is behind many failures.
C. Pointing out others’mistakes can help you find a job.
D. Accepting responsibility for one’s errors can lead to real excellence.

It was on her 14th birthday that her first book, In the Forest of the Night, was accepted for publication. It was a huge success gaining the attention of millions of young readers. At 16, her second novel, Demon in My View, also reached the bookstores. Several books later , the teenage author still works away in her room, surrounded by shelves full of dark tales about vampires(吸血鬼)and witches. Amelia Atwater – Rhodes is widely seen as America’s finest teen writer and was named one of Teen People’s “20 Teens Who Will Change the World.”
Born in 1984, she began making up stories when she was about three years old. “I never stopped and said, ‘I want to write’,” Amelia remembers. “I loved stories and created stories before I was old enough to know how to write them down.”
In her family, reading was basic and fun. “My parents encouraged me to read---- and to read anything I wanted, so long as I was reading,” she said. “They never restricted what I read. Later, when I started writing, they never criticized what I did or said I was ‘too young’. They never said it was impossible for me to achieve what I have.”
In her short but successful career, Amelia has tried different styles. But vampires were the first characters to really come alive in her work. From them she has developed a whole world, one which she always enjoys learning more about.
As a published teen writer, Amelia’s advice to other teens who dream of being authors is: just do it! “I believe anything is possible. Don’t give up your dreams just because you fear failure. Getting a book published is difficult, but if I can do it, others can too. ”
29. What can we learn about Amelia Atwater – Rhodes?
A. Reading widely helped her a lot in her career.
B. She found getting a book published was easy.
C. Vampires have been the only characters in her books.
D. Her parents began to teach her to make up stories when she was 3.
30. What do we know about Amelia’s parents?
A. They helped her with writing stories. B. They fully supported her.
C. They thought she was too young to read. D. They chose what she read.
31. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refers to __________. .

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person's thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (頭皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.
33. BCI is a technology that can ________.
A.help the disabled to recover B. control a person's thoughts
C. help to update computer systems D. link the human brain with computers
34. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?
A. By talking to the machine. B. By controlling his muscles.
C. By using his mind. D. By moving his hand.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries
B. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled
C. New Findings About How the Human Brain Works
D. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center

第二部分:閱讀理解(共兩節(jié),滿分35分)
第一節(jié)(共10個(gè)小題;每小題2.5分,滿分25分)
A
This is a true story that happened in Japan. In order to repair the house, a Japanese tore open the walls. Japanese houses normally have an empty space between the wooden walls. When pulling down the walls, he found that there was a lizard(蜥蜴) staying there because a nail(釘子) from outside was hammered into one of its feet. He saw this, feeling pity and curious. When he checked the nail, he found it was nailed 10 years ago when the house was first built.
What happened? The lizard had survived in such a position for 10 years! It has been in a dark wall partition(夾層) for 10 years without moving! Then he wondered how this lizard survived for 10 years without moving a single step—since its foot was nailed! So he stopped his work and observed the lizard: What has it been doing? What and how has it been eating? Later, he didn't know from where another lizard appeared, with food in its mouth. Ah! He was astonished and touched deeply. The free lizard had been feeding it for the past 10 years.
Such love, a beautiful love! Such love happened with this tiny creature… What can love do? It can do wonders! Just think about it: one lizard had been feeding the other for 10 long years, without giving up hope on its partner. If a small creature like a lizard can love like this, just imagine how we can love if we try.
16. How did the Japanese feel when seeing the lizard there?
A. Frightened B. Enjoyable C. Confused D. Usual

The kids in a village in Ethiopia wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.
The key to their success: 20 tablet computers(平板電腦) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a U.S. group called One Laptop Per Child.
The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where there are no schools or teachers. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing the project data say they’re already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopia program.
The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The device’s camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment in Ethiopia.
With his tablet, Kelbasa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own. “Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable,” said Keller.
The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading,” where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic, Ethiopia’s first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.
19. How does the Ethiopia program benefit the kids in the village?
A. It trains teachers for them.
B. It helps their self-study.
C. It raises their living standards.
D. It provides funds for building schools.
20. What can we infer from Keller's words in Paragraph 3?
A. They need more time to analyze data.
B. More children are needed for the research.
C. He is confident about the future of the project.
D. The research should be carried out in kindergartens.
21. What is the aim of the project?
A. To offer Ethiopians higher paying jobs.
B. To make Amharic widely used in the world.
C. To assist Ethiopians in learning their first language.
D. To help Ethiopian kids read to learn in English.

Workplaces all over the UK are preparing for Christmas and all the traditions and customs that come with it. But will Christmas be a cause for happiness and celebration or embarrassment and disappointment?
One way that colleagues in Britain show their appreciation of each other at this time of year is by doing "Secret Santa" present giving. At that time, people who work together buy each other gifts without saying whom they are from.
Co-workers all write their names on a piece of paper and then organize a lottery in which each workmate takes another colleague's name at random(任意地). Each person then has to buy a present for the colleague whose name they have picked, usually with an agreed price set at a small amount of money such as five or ten pounds.
As the gifts are given without knowing the names of the gift givers, the quality of the presents can be very different; gifts that people received are from tickets to the opera to an air-freshener for a car.
Another common seasonal workplace tradition is the office Christmas party, when workmates put on their most attractive clothes and enjoy lots of free wine.
Although most parties are held without a hitch, sometimes the effects of alcohol(酒精) cause party goers to regret their drunken antics(古怪行為).
The BBC invited people to share their most embarrassing(令人尷尬的) Christmas office party stories, and received hundreds of funny stories, such as the man who split his trousers back to front with his strange dance moves or the drunken lady who spent the entire night with back of her dress tucked into her pants and saw the photos that proved it later at work.
But the worst story must surely come from Stuart Vaines, who got so drunk that he put his boss's head into the toilet. Unsurprisingly, he lost his job the very next day.
22. By saying this Christmas will cause embarrassment, the author actually refers to_________.
A. the workmate who receives a ticket to the opera
B. the man who receives an air-freshener
C. the lady who tucked the back of her dress in her pants
D. the man who put his boss's head into the toilet
23. The underlined phrase "without a hitch" in Para.6 most probably means_________.
A. without trouble B. without an end
C. without free drinks D. with less people
24. It is implied in the passage that _________.
A. The gift givers do not know whom they will give gifts to
B. some workmates are not generous enough to buy expensive gifts
C. the BBC is interested in people's funny stories
D. some party-goers will wish they haven't drunk so much
25. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A. Office Parties at Christmas
B. Happiness from Office Parties
C. Celebrations in Workplaces at Christmas
D. Funny Stories from Office Parties

Over the past few years, there has been a big increase in the number of people sharing information online. In this article, we will learn about some positive reasons for people to share information online.
94% of those surveyed by The New York Times said they put a lot of thought into how the content they are sharing will be beneficial to others. We often share information with our friends in the office or at home to educate, entertain, or pleasantly surprise them. This is also true while sharing information online. If you look at the Facebook wall posts of your friends, you will realize that most of their updates are usually famous quotes(引述), entertaining videos, humorous images, funny jokes, etc.
A lot of people share information online to picture their true self to the outside world. Some people, especially those who are shy and not comfortable talking about their areas of interest in the presence of others, find it extremely convenient to share that information online with others.
According to the study, 78% of the people said they shared information online because it helps them develop better relationships. Today, people are so busy that they do not have the time to meet each other personally. A lot of people now “meet” each other online, rather than in places like restaurants and pubs.
Lastly, when we share our thoughts online, we are actively communicating with a large number of people who are a part of the World Wide Web. Sharing information will affect the viewpoint of others, or add to their understanding about the world.

W: Yeah, I’ve lived near Tokyo in Japan.
M: I guess you prefer that to your hometown?
W: Well, actually, I felt that Tokyo is too big of a city.

Today, let’s meet some of the world’s best-known couples. They are as inspiring as they are famous. As co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates is famous for his wealth. But he and his wife, Melinda, are steadily becoming just as well-known for their generosity. In 2000, the couple founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, now the world’s largest charity organization, which focuses on improving health and education worldwide. Up to now, the couple has donated more than $36 billion to the foundation.
King Bhumibol and his wife got married in 1950. Highly respected throughout the country, the couple are the most beloved public figures in Thailand. Sharing a common goal—to serve the people of Thailand—has brought the couple even closer. They also share a special burden for poor people in Thailand. Bhumibol uses his personal wealth to fund development projects. Similarly, his wife is well loved for her work with the Thai Red Cross.
Before they got married in 2001, Andre and Steffi were mainly famous for their remarkable tennis skills. But today, they’re becoming well-known for their efforts on behalf of children and the environment. The Andre Charitable Foundation has raised more than $60 million for recreational and educational programs for children in the US. Meanwhile, Steffi has broken out on environmental issues in her role as an official ambassador for the World Wildlife Fund.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.
I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.

In a faraway area in northern Mexico, there lives a native Indian group called the Tarahumaras(塔拉烏馬拉族). Besides owning some cooking tools and farming equipment, the Tarahumaras exist much as they did before the Spanish arrived in the 1600s. Th ey live in caves or in small houses made of stone and wood, and they eat what little they can grow on the dry land.
Ten years ago, linquist(語(yǔ)言學(xué)家) James Copeland entered the world of the Tarahumaras t study their language and culture. Since then, he has been visiting the Tarahumaras three or four times a year. Tarahumaras is not a written language, so part of Copeland’s project was to learn to speak Tarahumaras so that he could deal directly with the people. “There are no language police,” Copeland says. “Children are seldom corrected by their parents. They learn by observation of speech in conversations and by imitation.”
Copeland learned the language through his frequent exposure to it and by analyzing the grammar. His linguistic skills and mastery of German, Spanish, French and Russian, plus a partial knowledge of some twenty other languages, also helped. Drawing on his research, Copeland plans to produce a Tarahumara grammar book in English and perhaps one in Spanish.
The idea to study the Tarahumaras came to Copeland in 1984 when he discovered that very little research had been done on their language. He got in touch with a Tarahumaras Indian called Lornezo Gonzalez through a social worker who worked with the Tarahumaras in the border town of Juarez, Mexico. At first, Gonzalez was very reluctant to cooperate. He told Copeland that no amount of money could buy his language. But after Copeland explained to him what he intended to do with his research and how it would benefit the Tarahumaras, Gonzalez agreed to help and took Copeland to his village. “Thanks to him, the Tarahumaras started trusting us and understood what we were doing.”

Dear Mary,
Our school is going to hold a music festival next month, which will start with an opening ceremony on April 7.
The festival is aimed at making our cultural life colorful, providing opportunities of showing our talents and relaxing ourselves with the theme “Music Makes Us Happy”. After all, we senior high students are too tired with long periods of learning. We need to get relaxed. At the festival there will be musicals and singing contests. There are also music instrument playing contests. Those who are to take part are busy preparing for it.
I’m looking forward to the coming of the festival and sincerely hope the school music festival will be a great success.
Best wishes.
Yours truly,
Wang Fang
