English teaching robots were sent to three provincial schools for eight weeks starting in late December. There they teach students as teachers. More and more students like studying and the other robot teachers were also sent out. They can teach math, science and art.
The researchers found that the English-teaching robots helped raise interest in the language and helped the students feel more confident.
“Tele-presence” robots are controlled by an English and are equipped with a microphone and video camera. Many people think we can use these robot teachers in the village far away from the cities so that the children in these areas can also get better education.
The government has expressed great interest in robots to give rural school children more learning chances. I think in the future we can see more and more robot teachers working with the students. But I think the robot teachers can’t replace the real teachers. What’s your opinion?

If you're ever apart from your children, a new study says just talking on the phone will help just as much as a hug (擁抱).
If you're a parent who spends long hours on the job, you probably feel sorry for spending so much time away from your kids. But the results of a new study show that a mother's voice alone can be just as comforting to an anxious child as physical contact (接觸).
In an experiment, researchers from the University of Wisconsin Madison asked a group of girls between the ages of 7 and 12 to solve math problems in front of judges — a stressful situation for anyone. Before the girls were set to give their answers, the researchers measured their levels of two hormones(荷爾蒙):cortisol, which goes up during stressful periods, and oxytocin, the “love” hormone, which goes down at the same time.
After the girls finished the problems, some of them got to meet up with their mothers right away. The moms came in and hugged the girls. Another group of the girls didn't see their mothers, but received phone calls from them, in which their mothers told them how well they'd done. The final group had no contact with their mothers, but instead watched an animal movie, March of the Penguins.
Finally, the girls' hormone levels were measured again. Although the movie was interesting, it did nothing to reduce the children's anxiety—but, surprisingly, both the physical contact and phone calls from their mothers had the same effect on reducing the girls' stress levels.
So, no matter how old you are, if you're feeling stressed about something in your life, a phone call to Mom might be just the key to help you feel better.
48. If a girl is under stress, _______.
A. she can’t solve math problems
B. she will have high levels of hormone
C. oxytocin will remain at a high level
D. cortisol will go up with oxytocin down
49. Which of the following is the right order in which the study was carried out?
a. The girls' levels of hormones were measured again.
b. The girls solved math problems.
c. The girls' levels of hormones were measured.
d. The girls were divided into three groups.
A. b-c-d-a B. d-b-c-a C. c-b-d-a D. d-c-b-a
50. From the passage, we can infer that _______.
A. it is easy for girls to solve math problems
B. the girls who had watched the movie remained anxious
C. mothers should hug their kids as often as possible
D. older girls have higher cortisol than younger ones
51. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. A mother’s voice can comfort her anxious kids.
B. Mothers should often hug their kids.
C. Mothers should spend enough time caring about their kids.
D. Scientists discovered why kids become stressed when having tests.

Dear Seth,
You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can’t read, much less understand what I’ll tell you in this letter. But I’ve been thinking a lot about the life that you have ahead of you, and about my role as a dad in trying to prepare you for the difficulties that you’ll face.
You are young, and life has not yet to show a cold face to you, to throw disappointments and loneliness and pain into your path. You have not been worn down yet by long hours of thankless work.
For this, be thankful. You are at a wonderful time of life. You have many wonderful times still to come, but they are not without their costs and risks.
I hope to help you along your path by sharing some of the best of what I’ve learned. As with any advice, take it with a grain of salt. What works for me might not work for you.
Life can be cruel
There will be people in your life who won't be very nice. They’ll laugh at you or try to hurt you because you’re different. There’s not much you can do except learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you and who make you feel good about yourself. When you find friends like this, treasure them, spend time with them and love them.
Be open to life anyway
Yes, you’ll find cruelty and suffering in your journey through life, but don’t let that close you to new things. Don’t move back from life, don’t hide or wall yourself off. Be open to new things, new experiences, new people.
Life isn’t a competition
You will meet many people who will try to do better than you, in school , in college, at work. To them, life is a competition. But here’s the secret: life isn’t a com petition. It's a journey. Learn to enjoy the journey and make it a journey of happiness, of constant learning, of continual improvement, of love.
Love should be your rule
If there’s a single word you should live your life by, it should be this: love. It might sound out of date, I know, but trust me, there’s no better rule in life.
Love not only your loved ones, but your neighbors, your co-workers, strangers, even your enemy. The person who is hardest on you, unkind to you…, love him. He is most in need of your love. And most of all, love yourself and learn to love yourself for who you are.
Finally, know that I love you and always will. You are starting out on an unknown, tiring, scary, but badly wonderful journey, and always remember I will be there for you when I can.
Love,
Your Dad
52. The expression “take it with a grain of salt” probably means .
A. taking the advice heartily
B. thinking before taking the advice
C. accepting some part of the advice
D. refusing to accept the advice
53. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?
A. The father wants to get the child ready for the coming life.
B. The father is now thinking about his role as a dad.
C. The child is facing a lot of difficulties and hard times.
D. He wants to give the child some advice and shows the child his love.
54. Which of the following is the father’s opinion?
A. You will fin d cruelty and suffering through life when you wall yourself off.
B. If you’ve got wonder ful times of life without costs, you should be thankful.
C. Life isn’t a competition so don’t learn or improve yourself all the time.
D. Those who have been unkind to you are the most in need of your love.
55. What can you infer from the passage?
A. The son has already experienced heartaches and loneliness and pain.
B. The father is always there to support his son whenever he can.
C. Living by the rule of love, you will feel disappointment much less.
D. You should think though you are ugly, you’re worthy of happiness.

Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers were trying to learn more about the fish and other animal s that live in this part of the sea. The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore(海岸) and we spent three days on a boat.
The team used a piece of underwater equipment to collect information. This underwater equipment is called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite frightened —mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around and I could see all the way to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down.
I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team were very friendly and everyone was happy to explain w hat they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will surely encourage me to work harder to become a scientist.
61. When did the writer take part in an underwater research project?
62. What were the researchers trying to learn about in the Flower Gardens?
63. Why did the team use the ROV?
64. What did the writer enjoy most in the project?
65. What is the passage mainly about?
