In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. They're not really bad guests, but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different from that in some western countries, it appears they are not nice guests. And western guests sometimes look rude in the eyes of Chinese guests.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person's home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host's way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife's mother, a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that. In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you could ask, "Is it OK if I smoke?" But, don't be surprised if they say, "No, you can't smoke. " In our culture, if you smoke in their home, you are a bad guest, but if they don't allow you to smoke in their house, they are not a rude host.
Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese, so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite international guests to your home, don't be too surprised if they don't bring you a gift.
In China, you probably won't need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.
( )37. When a western guest visits a Chinese family, he often .
A. buys some fruit B. feels like a god
C. wants some gifts D. takes a cup of tea
( )38. If the writer's guests want to smoke in his house, what will he probably say?
A. It's OK if you smoke here. B. Let's smoke together.
C. Sorry, you can't smoke here. D. Smoking is a bad habit.
( )39. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase "adapt to" in the passage?
A. think back to B. get used to
C. look forward to D. keep close to
( )40.What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Foreigners should learn from Chinese.
B. Hosts must do things in the guests' way.
C. Western hosts are always nice to guests.
D. People should understand cultural differences.

The most important thing you should know about the high jump is not to give up. You will be successful only by practicing. All your friends will be amazed at your performance. With a lot of hard work you can improve your jumps.
The first suggestion you should keep in mind is using a longer approach (助跑). This may cause the most common mistakes. You must be with at least 20 feet behind the bar (起跑線) for getting the time to make a better reaction.
Another important suggestion is to feel good with your running speed. Remember this is not a running competition. Try to make suitable for the speed to your body. Run perpendicularly (直立地) to the bar and do the best you can. Even if your friends run faster than you, the important thing is how high the jump is.
Before jumping you should do some small exercises. For example, try doing some little jumps. This will let your mind know that you are preparing to jump again. This is more important than you think. It will help you get better results.
Lifting weights will help you improve the body balance. This is very important if you wish to jump high. Try not to do this exercising in the same day when you are planning to jump. You need a good plan for exercising. By lifting weights your muscles (肌肉) will get stronger too.
The only way to jump high is by working hard. You must know that it might take a while until you achieve the performance you wish. Giving up is not a choice. Do your best and someday you will get the best jumping skills in your friends.

My dad is very unique(獨(dú)特的)because of his personality and lifestyle. For example, put his watch on his left hand, even though he’s a lefty, and parking his car only in the garage is just his thing and doesn’t change.
My father only wears suits during the week because it’s something very professional(專(zhuān)業(yè)的)and formal. He loves to teach what he knows, from teaching my mother, aunt, and sisters driving skills to teaching his kids vocabulary. Also, whenever he is asked to do something at work, whatever it is, he will always complete the task on time.
My mother buys most of his clothes, as he hates big crowds. In his house, children watch TV only after finishing all the homework, which he believes is the best, because the child does his homework and still stays happy.
One of my father’s main focuses (重心)in life is making sure his children grow up the right way like he did.
He grew up with one sister in Chicago. As he got older, he got married to my mother who is three years younger than him.

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it’s not only how much we eat,
but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins(維生素) and other nutrient(s
營(yíng)養(yǎng)物)that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw(生的) vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene(番茄紅素), the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”
Many facts decide how the vegetables do good to people’s health before they reach the table, including
where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling(煮)was better for carrots than
frying(油炸)or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.
What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.
( ) 66. The writer mainly wants to tell us that .
A. eating vegetables is good for us
B. people should eat more vegetables
C. how much vegetables one should eat
D. the way people eat vegetables is important
( ) 67. The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time will .
A. have the eyes problems B. have heart disease
C. be in need of lycopene D. hate eating tomatoes
( ) 68. Lycopene is rich in .
A. red vegetables B. raw vegetables

( ) 69. The followings decide how the vegetables do good to people EXCEPT according to the passage.
A. the place where the vegetables are grown
B. the way how the vegetables are stored
C. the way how the vegetables are prepared
D. the price at which the vegetables are sold
( ) 70. From the last paragraph, we can know .
A. it’s better to cook the vegetables with the fat

C. the fat will increase the nutrition of the vegetables
D. the more fat in the cooking, the fewer vegetables people will eat

I still remember the true story that happened to me many years ago. It started while my family were on vacation. Vacations should be relaxing, but I needed to do some studying. I carefully put all my important papers and books in a large bag.
After a long drive to New York, we found a motel, a place for travelers and their cars, with a really good price. So we decided to stay there for a week. On the second day, after visiting some interesting places and having a big dinner, we returned to the motel. It was about ten o’clock in the evening, and I wanted to study. However, I couldn’t find my paper bag anywhere. I was quite sure that I had put it in the room. Suddenly, I realized the cleaner had taken it out with the rubbish.
I ran over to the main office, and asked if I could talk to the cleaner on duty that day. They told me all the cleaners had left for the day. They showed me where the rubbish bins were instead of offering me any help. I
walked out of the motel with a flashlight (電筒). I saw three large rubbish bins standing in the dark. 1 had to look
for my bag very carefully. But I didn’t have any luck. I almost wanted to give up. When I took another look into the last bin, I saw my bag right on its top! I was never so happy to see such a dirty old bag in my life!

When you watch TV programs about wild animals, it is surprising to see how an antelope can run away from a lion. In the wilderness, everyone has his own way to protect himself. Even plants have their own ways of fighting off enemies.
Over millions of years of evolution, plants have developed their own defence system(防御系統(tǒng)). Chemicals are wildly used for survival(生存). By making their leaves, flowers, roots and fruits distasteful or poisonous(有毒的) to enemies, plants can fight back.
One such plant is the Golden Wattle tree. The British scientist David Cameron has found when an animal eats the tree’s leaves, the amount of poison increases in the other leaves. “It’s like the damaged leaves telephoning the others telling them to fight together against the enemy, ” he said.
The tree also sends defence messages to neighboring plants by giving out a special smell. Golden Wattle trees in the surrounding 45 meters will get the message and produce more poison within 10 minutes. Now, if an enemy eats too many of the trees’ leaves, it will die.
Every species of plant or tree is good at the production of a particular set of chemicals. A herbivore that can safely eat the leaves of one tree may be poisoned by its neighbor.
In this way, plants have developed not only individual defence system, but also shared it with others. This makes it impossible for a single animal to destroy even a small area of forest.

One day Peng Xianzhe learned he would go to the Mashan School in Guizhou. The 16-year-old boy tried to imagine how serious the drought(干旱)was for the students at that school. However, he realized it was more serious than he had imagined when he saw the sign “DON’T wash clothes with water,or you will be punished(懲罰). ”
Because of drought, the school has been short of water for a long time. Each student has only one bottle of water every day for washing and drinking. The drought has made the poor students much poorer.
Peng is a student from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School. He took part in the school’s Rain & Bow Project from April 2 to 10.
The project idea came from Peng’s principal(負(fù)責(zé)人). One day, she heard a sad story about Li Guoxian, a poor girl in the Mashan School, who stopped going to school because of drought. The principal started this project to help the school. In one day, 3,000 students made over 10,000 donations of water, books and clothes.
Peng and other four students went to the Mashan School and gave the donations with five teachers. They visited poor families, made surveys and had classes at the school.
Ding Zhentao,16,was worried about the school’s poor learning environment. “The blackboards and playground are too shabby to use,”Ding said. “Besides, there really aren’t enough teachers. A teacher has to teach both history and English, and even the cook is a class teacher. ”
Although life isn’t easy, students at the school have a positive attitude(積極的態(tài)度)towards life and they are quite willing to learn. That’s what moved 16-year-old Chen Shi most.
“They sang their songs together as usual before class every afternoon. After class, the students asked us to tell them things about Beijing and our studies,” Chen said. “You can see the passion(熱情)in them. I believe it will make a difference. Their futures will be bright. ”

First thing in the morning, I checked Face Book only to see how I’ve already fallen behind. A workmate has written a new book. Two of my heroes have completed a big project. One of my old college friends posted a video for an online program she’s talking. She looks successful, shiny and charming. 66
Am I really falling behind? Did these people post any of these things in order to make me feel bad? Of course not. But if I’m not careful it’s terribly easy to see social media(社會(huì)媒體) as a reminder(提醒) of all the things I’m not doing.
67 It’s a comparison problem. It’s all about how we think about it. I know it’s not just me. Our culture is full of comparisons, and it’s not hard to look around at what other people are doing with their short time, and ask”What about me?” Comparisons can make you not believe yourself. 68
Don’t compare your insides with someone else’s outsides. 69
Don’t act like it was effortless or pure luck. It’s much easier to look at someone “up there”and be jealous of what they have than to be happy for them and make yours better. Have a clear understanding of yourself.
70 You’re neither better than nor worse than anyone in the world. Be yourself and do your best.

Fifteen years ago, most people rode bikes when travelling for a short distance. Because there weren’t many cars, the air was fresh. And people kept in touch with each other mainly by telephone.
Now, many people own cars as well as cellphones which are widely used to chat on QQ, do shopping, etc. Lives seem easier than before, but too many cars make traffic heavier, and air pollution is getting worse.
To live a better life, we still have a lot to do.
