元宵節(jié)習俗:A Brief Introduction of the Lantern Festival 元宵節(jié)概述
The Lantern Festival occurs on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month according to the old Chinese calendar,when a full moon provides enough light for the various ceremonies and activities traditionally held throughout China. Customarily,family members reunite for a meal of Yuanxiao,round, sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour served in soup,which symbolize a wish for the family's happiness and good luck all year.
根據(jù)舊中國歷法,元宵節(jié)在農(nóng)歷正月的第十五天,當滿月提供足夠的光線舉行各種儀式和活動時,傳統(tǒng)上貫穿整個中國。習慣上,家庭成員元宵團聚在一起吃一頓飯,用糯米粉做成的圓形湯圓出現(xiàn)在飯桌上,這象征著希望家庭幸福和好運連年。

Yuanxiao is the special food for the Lantern Festival. It is believed that Yuanxiao is named after a palace maid, Yuanxiao, of Emperor Wu Di of the Han Dynasty. Yuanxiao is a kind of sweet dumpling, which is made with sticky rice flour filled with sweet stuffing. And the Festival is named after the famous dumpling. It is very easy to cook - simply dump them in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes - and eaten as a dessert.

"Guessing lantern riddles"is an essential part of the Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answer. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The activity emerged during people's enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom, it has become popular among all social strata.

In the daytime of the Festival, performances such as a dragon lantern dance, a lion dance, a land boat dance, a yangge dance, walking on stilts and beating drums while dancing will be staged. On the night, except for magnificent lanterns, fireworks form a beautiful scene. Most families spare some fireworks from the Spring Festival and let them off in the Lantern Festival. Some local governments will even organize a fireworks party. On the night when the first full moon enters the New Year, people become really intoxicated by the imposing fireworks and bright moon in the sky.

Lantern Festival has a history of more than 2 000 years. It started in West Han Dynasty when emperor gave orders that all people light lamps at that nightto show respect to Buddha. Since then the festival soon popularized. In Tang and Song Dynasties,lantern display continues for 5 consecutivenights,starting from 13th to 17th of the first lunar month. In Qing Dynasty, the festival became even more recognized,as lanterns displayed from 8th to17th—a 10 consecutive nights, the longest time in history. Today, in city parks or in the open squares,various kinds of lanterns are highly hung and displayed, and palace lantern, running horse lantern,flower-and-plant lantern,etc. have added to the bright night and attracted many people who rarely come out at night.
元宵節(jié)至今已有2000多年的歷史。它開始于西漢武帝時下令所有的人在當晚點燈,以示尊敬佛。從那時起,這個節(jié)日很快普及。在唐宋時期,花燈展示繼續(xù)連續(xù)5個晚上,從農(nóng)歷正月13開始到17。在清代,節(jié)日變得更加認可,因此花燈展示從農(nóng)歷正月8日開始到17,連續(xù)10個晚上,歷史上時間最長的燈籠展。如今,在城市公園或露天廣場,各種燈籠高掛展示,宮燈、奔馬燈、花燈和植物燈籠等。到璀璨之夜,會吸引很多平時很少夜里出來的人。
