Zhang Yeju, a law student at China University of Political Science and Law was greeted byanother student on his way to class. The problem was Zhang, 19, did not know the guy at all.

While they talked about the weather Zhang tried hard to recall the stranger’s name before theduo enter the same classroom.

"I felt a bit embarrassed when I chatted with him without knowing his name," said Zhang.

According to Zhang this was not the first time he’s had a "stranger encounter" on campus.

There are 60 people in his class, but Zhang knows the names of fewer than 30 of them after ayear of study.

According to a recent survey conducted by MyCOS HR Digital Information Co, a consulting firmon higher education, about 40 percent of students in university admitted that they haveproblems with interpersonal relationships.

Zhang Jitao, associate professor of sociology at Hubei University, sees a new trend on campus: to have smaller circles of friends who are more diverse and unique.

"Having your life revolve around a small group of friends might have a negative impact onone’s future career after school," said Zhang to Chutian Metropolitan Daily.

However, students seem not to worry about it at all.

Qin Yuanyuan, 20, a junior biology major at Guangxi University sees no need to expand hissocial circle when he has access to the Internet.

"The Internet has developed so well that I can get nearly everything online. I don’t need to gainknowledge, get information or have fun with friends around. Instead, I can make friendsonline," said Qin.
“網(wǎng)絡(luò)已十分發(fā)達(dá),網(wǎng)上的東西幾乎應(yīng)有盡有。我不需要同身邊的朋友們一起獲取知識(shí)、信息或歡樂。我反而可以在網(wǎng)上交友。”秦元元說(shuō)。
The more time students spent on the Internet, the less they paid attention to those aroundthem, said Li Zixun, of the psychology department of Beijing-based China-Japan FriendshipHospital.
北京中日友好醫(yī)院心理醫(yī)生李子勛表示,學(xué)生們上網(wǎng)花費(fèi)的時(shí)間越多,對(duì)身邊人的關(guān)注就越少。
But Li considers it is not always a bad thing for students to live independently in campus.

"This generation does not rely on social contacts to make them feel secure. They can liveindependently without having any relationships. It is an advantage in cultivating diversethoughts among young people," said Li.
“這代人不再依賴社交接觸來(lái)獲得安全感。他們不需要任何人際關(guān)系便能夠獨(dú)立生活。這對(duì)于培養(yǎng)年輕人的多樣性思維是個(gè)優(yōu)勢(shì)。”李子勛說(shuō)。
He Xiao, a freshman at Hubei University, agrees. He thinks as long as one enjoys friendshipsand share similar interests and attitudes, it is not necessary to have a wide range ofacquaintances.
對(duì)此,湖北大學(xué)大一新生何曉(音譯)表示贊同。他認(rèn)為只要你可以和朋友一同感受友情,分享共同的愛好和態(tài)度,沒必要廣泛交友。
"For me, having several friends to play basketball with and have midnight snacks with areenough. I think the most important thing is that you can have fun," said the 19-year-oldcomputer science major.
作為一名計(jì)算機(jī)專業(yè)學(xué)生,19歲的何曉說(shuō):“對(duì)于我來(lái)說(shuō),只要有三五好友同我一起打球,一起吃宵夜就足夠了。我覺得最重要的是高興就好。”
According to psychologist Li Zixun from Beijing, heavy pressure on students is fueling theestrangement on campus.
來(lái)自北京的心理學(xué)家李子勛表示,學(xué)生身上的繁重壓力使得校園里人際關(guān)系日益疏遠(yuǎn)。
"When young people spend so much time and energy studying, it is common to pay lessattention to others," said Li. "Socializing also requires time and energy."
“當(dāng)年輕人將大量時(shí)間和精力花在學(xué)習(xí)上時(shí),通常都會(huì)減少對(duì)他人的關(guān)注。”李子勛說(shuō),“社交活動(dòng)也需要花費(fèi)時(shí)間和精力。”
