If So For Birds, Why Not For Man?
This is a true story. It was on a winter morning, near Oxford, Maryland, that a friend of mine set the breakfast table beside the huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River. Across the river, beyond the dock, the snow laced the rim of the shore in white. For a moment she stood quietly, looking at what the night's storm had painted.

Suddenly she leaned forward and peered close to the frosted window. “It really is true,” she cried out loud. “There is a goose out there.” She saw a large Canadian goose, very still, its wings folded tight to its sides, its feet frozen to the ice.
突然,她向前傾了傾身子,貼近結(jié)了霜的窗戶向外仔細(xì)看去。“是真的!”她不禁失聲叫道,“那兒有一只黑雁!”她看到了一只碩大的加拿大黑雁,它一動(dòng)不動(dòng),翅膀緊緊地收攏在身體兩側(cè),雙腳已經(jīng)被凍在了冰里。
Then from the dark skies, she saw a line of swans. They moved in their own singular formation, graceful, intrepid, and free. Suddenly they floated from the top of the sky downward and at last surrounded the frozen goose. Seeing this, my friend feared what life it still had might be pecked out by those great swan bills.
這時(shí),她看到一隊(duì)天鵝從昏暗的天空飛過來。它們以自己獨(dú)特的陣式飛行著,優(yōu)雅,無畏而又自在。突然,它們從高空向下飛去,最后將那只凍僵的黑雁團(tuán)團(tuán)圍住了??吹竭@種場(chǎng)景,我的朋友滿心恐懼,擔(dān)心那只一息尚存的黑雁或許將在一群天鵝的利喙下變得千瘡百孔。
Instead, amazingly, those bills began to work on the ice. At last, the goose was rimmed by a narrow margin of ice instead of the entire creek. The swans rose again, hovered in a circle, awaiting the results of their labors.
然而令人驚訝的是,那些利喙卻啄起冰塊來。最后,黑雁的身體周圍只是鑲嵌著窄窄的冰塊,而不再被整條冰河所困。天鵝們于是再次飛起,在天空中盤旋飛行,等待觀看它們的勞動(dòng)成果。
The goose's head lifted. Its body pulled. Then the goose was free and standing on the ice. But it seemed not be able to fly. Later, four of the swans came down around it. Their powerful beaks scraped the goose's wings from top to bottom and rode up its body, chipping off the ice held in the feathers.
黑雁抬起頭來,用力伸展著身體,最后它終于掙脫了冰凍,站在了冰面上。但它似乎不能飛起來。隨后,只見四只天鵝飛到它的身旁,用它們那強(qiáng)有力的喙上上下下地蹭它的翅膀,拱它的身體,啄掉它羽毛里的冰塊。
The goose spread its wings as far as they would go. When at last the wings reached their fullest, the four swans took off and joined the hovering group. They resumed flying in perfect formation, to their secret destination.
Behind them, rising with incredible speed and joy, the goose moved into the sky. It followed them, flapping double time, until it caught up, until it joined the last end of the elegant line.
黑雁極力地伸展著雙翅。當(dāng)翅膀最終完全展開后,四只天鵝飛起,回到了自己的隊(duì)伍中。隨后,這隊(duì)天鵝又以完美的陣式繼續(xù)飛行,飛往它們那神秘的歸宿。
就在它們的身后,那只黑雁以驚人的速度快活地飛入天空。它隨天鵝飛去,加倍抖動(dòng)著雙翅,最終趕上了它們,加入了那一優(yōu)美的線條,緊跟其后。
My friend was deeply moved with tears running down her cheeks. Even birds give a hand to those in trouble. I just often think of this story in the bad moments and tell myself, “If so for birds, why not for man?”
我的朋友被深深地打動(dòng)了,淚流滿面。連鳥兒都知道危難時(shí)刻要互相幫助。在陷入困境時(shí),我總會(huì)想起這個(gè)故事,總是提醒自己:“鳥兒尚且如此,何況人呢?”

飛翔
Once upon a time there was a little orphan boy who had always wished that he could fly like a bird. “Why can't I fly like a bird?” he thought.
從前有個(gè)小男孩,他是個(gè)孤兒,總是希望自己能像鳥兒一樣飛翔。“為什么我不能像鳥兒一樣飛翔呢?”他心想。
There was another little boy who was crippled. He had always wished that he could walk and run like other little boys and girls. “Why can't I be like them?” he wondered.
One day the little orphan boy met the little crippled boy in a park. He ran over to the little boy and asked him if he had ever wanted to fly like a bird.
還有一個(gè)小男孩,他是個(gè)跛子,總是希望自己能像其他的小男孩和小女孩一樣會(huì)走會(huì)跑。“為什么我就不能像他們那樣呢?”他很納悶。
一天,孤兒小男孩和跛子小男孩在一個(gè)公園里偶然相遇。孤兒小男孩跑向跛子小男孩,問他是否希望像鳥兒一樣飛翔。
“No,” said the little crippled boy. “But I have wondered what it would be like to walk and run like other boys and girls.”
“不,”跛子小男孩說。“但我在想如果像其他的小男孩和小女孩一樣能走能跑會(huì)是什么樣子。”
“That is very sad.” the little orphan boy said, “Do you think we could be friends?”
“Sure.”
“那太令人傷心了。”孤兒小男孩說,“你覺得我們會(huì)成為朋友嗎?”
“當(dāng)然可以。”
The two little boys played happily for hours. Then the little crippled boy's father came with a wheelchair to pick up his son. The little orphan boy ran over to the boy's father and whispered something into his ear.
兩個(gè)小男孩一起玩耍了幾個(gè)小時(shí),他們是那么開心。后來,跛子小男孩的父親推著輪椅來接他的兒子。孤兒小男孩跑向那位父親,湊近他的耳朵竊竊私語了一番。
“That would be OK.” said the man.
Then the little boy ran over to his new friend and said, “You are my only friend and I wish that there was something that I could do to make you walk and run like other little boys and girls. But I can't. But there is something that I can do for you.”

接著,小男孩又跑向他的新朋友,說道:“你是我唯一的朋友,我真希望自己能做些什么以便讓你像其他小男孩和小女孩一樣能走能跑,但我無能為力。不過,我還是能為你做些什么的。
The little orphan boy turned around and told his new friend to slide up onto his back. He then began to run across the grass. Faster and faster he ran, carrying the little crippled boy on his back. Faster and harder he ran across the park. Harder and harder he made his legs travel. Soon the wind just whistled across the two little boys' faces.
孤兒小男孩轉(zhuǎn)過身去,要他的新朋友滑到自己的后背上。然后,他開始穿過草地跑起來。就這樣,孤兒小男孩背著跛子小男孩,跑得越來越快,越來越猛,穿越整個(gè)公園,他的兩條腿簡(jiǎn)直像飛起來一般。不一會(huì)兒,吹在兩個(gè)小男孩臉龐的風(fēng)呼嘯起來。
The little boy's father began to cry as he watched his beautiful little crippled son flapping his arms up and down in the wind, all the while yelling at the top of his voice,“I'M FLYING, DADDY. I'M FLYING!”
只見跛子小男孩在風(fēng)中上下舞動(dòng)著手臂,樣子是那么美,他一路高聲呼喊:“我在飛啊,爸爸。我在飛!”看著這一場(chǎng)景,小男孩的父親感動(dòng)地流下了眼淚。
Friends always do their best to help us accomplish your dreams. The little orphan boy could do nothing to make the crippled boy walk or run, but he managed to make him “fly”. He failed to make his own dream of flying come true, but he took delight in helping his friend “fly”.
朋友總會(huì)盡他們最大的努力幫助我們實(shí)現(xiàn)夢(mèng)想。孤兒小男孩對(duì)跛子小男孩能走能跑的愿望束手無策,但他卻想方設(shè)法使他“飛起來”。他沒有實(shí)現(xiàn)自己飛翔的夢(mèng)想,但他卻可以幫助朋友“飛翔”,并且引以為樂。

Salty Coffee
咸味咖啡
A boy invited a girl to have coffee with him at a party. He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt uncomfortable.
一個(gè)聚會(huì)上,有個(gè)男孩邀請(qǐng)一個(gè)女孩跟他一起喝咖啡。他太緊張了,一句話也說不出來,這讓她感覺很不舒服。
Suddenly he asked the waiter: “Would you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
突然,他問服務(wù)員:“請(qǐng)給我一些鹽,好嗎?我想把它放進(jìn)我的咖啡里。”
She asked him curiously: “Why do you have this hobby?”
她很好奇,便問道:“你怎么會(huì)有這樣一個(gè)愛好?”
He replied: “Every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood, think of my hometown, I miss my hometown so much, I miss my parents who are still living there.”
他回答說:“我每次喝咸味咖啡時(shí),總會(huì)想起我的童年,想起我的故鄉(xiāng),我太思念故鄉(xiāng)了,那里住著我的父母親,我非常想念他們。”
While saying that, tears filled his eyes. She was deeply touched. Then she also started to speak, spoke about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.
他說這些話時(shí),不禁熱淚盈眶。女孩被深深地感動(dòng)了。然后,她開始開口,講述她那遙遠(yuǎn)的故鄉(xiāng),她的童年和家庭。這真是一場(chǎng)美妙的談話,從此一個(gè)美麗的愛情故事開始了。
They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who met all her demands; he had tolerance, was kind hearted, warm, careful. Then they got married and were living the happy life...And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee, as she knew that’s the way he liked it.
他們繼續(xù)約會(huì)。女孩發(fā)現(xiàn),事實(shí)上,男孩符合她所有的要求,他寬容、善良、熱情、細(xì)心。然后,他們就結(jié)婚了,過著幸福的生活……她每次為他煮咖啡,都要在咖啡里放些鹽,因?yàn)樗浪矚g那樣。
After 40 years, he passed away, left her a letter which said: “My dearest, please forgive me, forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to you—the salty coffee.
四十年后,他離開了人世,給她留下了一封信。信上說:“我最親愛的,請(qǐng)?jiān)徫?,原諒我一生的謊言。這是我對(duì)你說的唯一的一個(gè)謊言——咸味咖啡。
“I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I have promised not to lie to you for anything. Now I’m dying, I’m afraid of nothing so I tell you the truth: I don’t like the salty coffee, what a strange bad taste. But I have had the salty coffee for my whole life! Since I knew you, I never feel sorry for anything I do for you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life. If I can live for a second time, I still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even though I have to drink the salty coffee again.”
“在我有生之年,有多少次我試圖將真相告訴你,但是我太擔(dān)心了,就沒那樣做,因?yàn)槲蚁蚰惆l(fā)過誓絕不對(duì)你撒謊。我現(xiàn)在奄奄一息,已經(jīng)不再有什么顧忌,所以我就把真相告訴你吧:我不喜歡咸味咖啡,它的味道是那么奇怪。但是我卻喝了一生的咸味咖啡!自從結(jié)識(shí)你以來,我就從沒有對(duì)我為你做過的事情遺憾過。有你在我身邊是我一生最大的幸福。假若我有第二次生命,我仍然想認(rèn)識(shí)你,一生擁有你,即使我還要喝咸味咖啡。”
Her tears made the letter totally wet.
她的眼淚浸透了信紙。
Some day, someone asked her: “What’s the taste of salty coffee?” “It’s sweet.” She replied.
有一天,有人問她:“放了鹽的咖啡什么味道?”“甜甜的。”她回答。
The magic of love works in the loving pairs. Both parts are always ready to sacrifice for the other’s sake. Though probably such a sacrifice will cause bitterness to the contributing one, he or she feels sweet.
情侶之間有一種愛的魔力。兩人總會(huì)為彼此做出犧牲。盡管這樣的犧牲會(huì)給付出的一方帶來一些痛苦,但他/她仍然感覺甜蜜。
