Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business.

For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar.

They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning, by study; and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience.

Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation.

Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider.

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books, else distilled books are like common distilled waters, flashy things.

Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not.

Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend. Abeunt studia in mores 'Studies pass into and influence manners'.

Nay, there is no stond or impediment in the wit but may be wrought out by fit studies; like as diseases of the body may have appropriate exercises. Bowling is good for the stone and reins; shooting for the lungs and breast; gentle walking for the stomach; riding for the head; and the like.

So if a man's wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics; for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again. If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the Schoolmen; for they are cymini sectores 'splitters of hairs'. If he be not apt to beat over matters, and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another, let him study the lawyers' cases. So every defect of the mind may have a special receipt.

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. A special hello to all the fans of Read English for You Program. I amYongqing. It's my great honor to be your tour guide. Close your eyes, free your heart andtravel with me.

Beneath the colorful clouds in Yunnan Province lies a place of mystery and legend. Now, I willtake you to this place to experience the stunning beauty of Hani Terrace and unique culture ofYi nationality. What is the place? Well, it is Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Hongheis home to ten ethnic groups, among which Hani and Yi people take predominance over innumber. It provides travelers a cultural feast of ethnic costumes, architecture, songs anddances. A red river runs through the prefecture. In Chinese, Hong means red. He indicatesriver. That's why Honghe Prefecture is called.

Now we are reaching Yuanyang, a county in Honge. The Hani Terraces spread along thesouthern bank of the Red River and cover a total area of over 40,000 hectares. The core areasin Yuanyang County fully demonstrate the charm of Hani Terrace. Yunnan's mountains areremote, rugged and inaccessible. However, the Hani people have lived here for more than athousand years. The steep topography and severe weather condition didn't threaten Hanipeople to move away. Instead, they dug numerous trenches in the mountains so that thewater could flow down. To keep the water, they built banks along these mountains.

Over centuries, by developing irrigation networks, they could grow rice in these water fields. Formore than 1,300 years, it has transformed the landscape. These mountains plunge nearlytwo kilometers to the floor of red river valley. Each contains thousands of terraces. They werecurved out by the use of hand-made tools. That's no wonder why Hani Terrace is praised as "areal sculpture of the earth".

Equally important, by making the terraces, Hani people created wetland in places where therewas no wetland at all. Thus, the climate can be regulated and biodiversity is maintained.Villages scatter in the terraces. These villagers seem to live near to heaven. They still ploughthe terraces by water buffaloes. This man-made landscape is one of the most amazingengineering in pre-industrial China. It seems that every inch of the land has been pressed intocultivation. It is breathtaking for you to stand on the top of the mountain to overview theterraces. UNESCO is also amazed at the spectacular work. It's listed as a world heritage site.

After appreciating the stunning beauty of Hani Terrace, we reach Shiping County. Huayaopeople, a branch of Yi nationality, inhabit in this area. You may be attracted by the versatilepeople and natural beauty. Why are they called Huayao people? If you are observant, you willnotice their beautiful clothing especially their belts. They are called Huayao people because thefemales wear such beautiful belts around their waists. Huayao Bride, a film featuring on the lifeof Huayao people, was shot there. Huayao people are very good at singing and dancing. Theyhave worshipped dragon since ancient time. Both males and females can perform dragondance. On the stage of Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony, they performed dragon dance toaudiences from all over the world.

Listen, who is singing? Every time there is a festival, members of the community, males andfemales, the young and the old, will gather around a bonfire on the village square. They singand dance happily. It is also a place for the young to find their love. Let's join in the party. Ifyou are still single, you may find your sweetheart. What? Huayao friends are inviting us to theirparty. Let's go!
