Self employment

Self employment could bring many advantages. One of the advantages of being self-employed is that the profit the business makes belongs to the owner. If the self-employed person succeeds in business, he has the chance to earn a great deal of money. The profit earned is the reward for the owner's effort, ability and creativity. Thus, a second advantage is that a person's intelligence and abilities have a direct effect on the earnings. A third advantage of being self-employed is that a person can control his working hours. While not all self-employed people are completely free, most of them have more control over this area than the salaried people.

However, being self-employed is not without problems. First, being one's own boss places the responsibility directly on that individual shoulders. Everyone has some weaknesses in a certain aspects. These weaknesses will affect how successful a self-employed person is. Second, though the self-employed can earn considerable profits with a successful business, losses can force them out of business and sometimes, place them in debt. A third disadvantage concerns income security. Self-employed people have no guaranteed wage. Their earnings can vary greatly, depending on business conditions. Salaried people, however, can generally count on continued earnings.

In addition, salaried people often enjoy fringe benefits that mean greater peace of mind. One of these benefits may be insurance paid for by the employer that continues the employee's salary in the event of sickness or accident while many self-employed people do not have such protection.

What makes people shun the relative security of full-time employment and start up a business themselves? For the past five years, the European Union's head office has financed an annual poll of more than 21,000 people on both sides of the Atlantic.

The survey told a different story. Europeans essentially said they couldn't be bothered with the effort involved in starting a business: They wanted a regular, fixed income and a stable job.

The most recent of these studies, released this week, shows that despite efforts to make the Union more competitive, the majority of its citizens remain consistently less entrepreneurial and more risk-averse than their American counterparts.

Only 5 percent of Europeans said fear of red tape or reluctance to battle bureaucracies was holding them back. A corollary to this is the fear of failure in Europe. Half of all European respondents agreed with the statement, "One should not start a business if there is a risk it might fail." Only one-third of Americans agreed.

If Europe can successfully diminish the stigma of failure, more people would be willing to start their own businesses. "There is a completely different attitude toward risk,"

said Zourek of the European Commission, comparing Europe with the United States. In Europe, "once you try a venture and you don't succeed, you don't get a second chance, but you get a stigma," he said.

The European Union, he said, should make bankruptcy procedures less burdensome and make getting credit easier for risk-takers, even those who have failed before.

There were an estimated 20.5 million people working in start-up companies in the United States in 2003, this is 23 times the number of those working at startups in France. The U.S. number was also 9 times the number of those in Britain and more than 7 times that of Germany.

That's not necessarily true of all Europeans: the poll found that people from smaller countries like Portugal, Greece, Ireland and Latvia were much more enthusiastic about working for themselves.

In this survey, 55 percent of Europeans aged 15 to 24 said that it would be "desirable" for them to become self-employed in the next five years. Among those 55 and older, only 18 percent said the same.

Young Europeans could be the motor of entrepreneurship. But with European countries having some of the lowest birth rates in the developed world, who will take their place?

It is Better to Find a Job or run a Business?

In the new century, with the emergence of talent and less opportunity of social jobs, many college students face great employment pressure. At the same time, someone choose to do pioneering work, and some succeeded, some failed. To find a stable job or to start a business has become a hot topic.

First of all, a stable job let the freshmen learn experience from predecessor faster. Lacking of the contacts and fund would be one important reason for most Chinese college students to find a stable job. At present, not only in China but all around the world are facing great employment pressure , the news of Wall Street's bankruptcy, the U.S. government closed makes people understand clearly that to find a job is not easy right now.

Secondly, to start a business let the entrepreneurs handle their times freely and win respect from others. Graduates can be their own boss and decide their business. In recent years, governments have introduced policies to encourage graduates to do pioneering work. Therefore, it is a good opportunity to try. When the business success, entrepreneurs would not only win money but respect and prestige, even make their dreams come true.

For me, I think whether one suit open a company should according to his reality situation .because it exists big risk and not everyone can withstand failure .
