Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, "Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience."
How right they were. Enthusiastic people can tum a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers,¨I can do it!" when others shout, "No, you can't."
It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock,a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn't let up on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.
We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant's delight at the jingle of keys o'r the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age.
At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes.
Music, for Casals, was an elixir that made life a never ending adventure. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, "Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."
How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer,I believe, lies in the worditself. "Enthusiasm" comes from the Greek and means "God within." And what is God within is but an abiding sense oflove - proper love of self (self-acceptance) and, from that, love of others.
Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money o'r title o'r power. If we cannot do what we love as afull-time career, we can as a part-time avocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons, the executive who handcrafts furniture.
Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended bouts of depression that had plagued her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say,”I am tempted to call Layton a genius." Elizabeth has rediscovered her enthusiasm.
We can't afford to waste tears on "might-have-been." We need to turn the tears into sweat as we goafter "what-can-be."
We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses - finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow.
It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes,a lilt in our steps and smooth the wrinkles from our souls.
What is the definition of”happiness?¨Is it material wealth filled with fancy cars,a dreamhouse, exteravagant furs and jewelry? Or is happiness simply having a roof over your head?
Food inthefridge?Having a child? A pet?A swimming pooI?A designer Gucci bag? Parents?Grandchildren? Love? Money? The perfct job?Winning the Lottery?
According to the American Heritage Dictionary,”happiness”is derived from the Middle Englishword hap-meaning¨Luck.¨
But does happiness really have anything to do with”luck?¨Based on this description, one couldassume that if you avoide*水a(chǎn):stal traffic accident but got fired by coming late to work, youwould be fdled with¨happiness?¨
Is it luck or what you make of it?Maybe,”happiness”is exactly defined by its indirectalias:happiness-perhaps,happiness is in fact defined by the fortune thatwe permit to happen.
Do you recall a time-let's say when you were about 5 years old-what defined happiness backthen? Was it getting a puppy for Christmas?
Or maybe, you were a child of divorce;and all you wanted was for Mom and Dad to get backtogether again? Then as you got older, you were hoping that someone would ask you to theprom that would've made your day, maybe your life for the moment.
During college, good grades made you happy, but it was short-lived.Becaust in the real world, youhad to look for a job,and competition was stark.lt's an employer's world you thought.Butthen, you got the perfect job-now you could be happy-or could you?
Life requires more than just what we want. Inevitably, one must understand to trulyfind¨happiness,¨he must make his own happiness ¨happen¨.
Sounds a bit redundant, but truthfully, there is no set guidelines that will bring onehappiness. There is no¨magic wand¨we can wave to bring joy into our lives.Human naturethrives on the thrill of the chase. We dream and we hope for the next big brea-it is the grandadventure of licing.
We are hopeless creatures of comfort. We like having and accumulating things.Whether oneadmits to it or not,to a certain degree,we all try to keep up with¨the Jones¨.
We work so we can pay our rents, mortgages, credit card debts, school loans, car payments_thelist goes on and on.And at some point,we realize, that aside from having most of what wewant,we still arem't happy.
Now since we've learned to adapt to new standards which we've created for ourselves,we findthat we have less time, less patience, less sleep, which equates to more stress, more worry andmore aggravation. So,is happiness honestly juest comprised of"things"?
Sometimes,we virtually reade our lives for not only basic necessities, but for excesslve items andservlces as well.
We become so obsessed with finding happiness, that we lose sight of the fact that happiness iswithin-always.
Certainly you've heard of individuals trying to find themselves,or rediscover themselves.
The reason they are attempting these innovantive approaches is because they are seeking innerhappiness. But the point has been missed:Happiness is already there.
Disappointments and reagedies in life will come and go,but happiness never leaves you.
The human's capacity to be resilient to reials is unfathomable. We can lose our jobs, but begrateful for our spouses. We can lose our homes to nature, but be thankful to alive.
Happiness is a perception of each indivduaI.We are instincively compelled to find fault in ourlives.
By human nature,we begin our "fault-find-ing"mission the moment we're capable of free-thinking.lt is then, that we lose sense of self-worth and the bigger picture of vitality altogether.
Stuck in the patterns of the happiness paradox,we simply cannot find where our happiness hasgone.
It's not a matter of bargaining,it's not an issue of money or fame-instead,happiness is whatyou resolve to accept.
lf we live through optimis-tic hope;if we dare to dream;if we empower ourselves to fullylive;then we have regained our sense of happiness,There is no in berween. There is no otherreplacement. We only have one physical life to live-we have no choice but to make the mostofit,
In a university commencement address several years ago, Brian Dyson, CEO of Coca ColaEnterprises, spoke of the relation of work to one's other commitments:
Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit and you're keeping all of these in the air. You will soonunderstand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.
But the other four balls family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one ofthese, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They willnever be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life. How?
Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are differentthat each of us is special.
Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best foryou.
Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as they would be yourlife, for without them, life is meaningless.
Don't let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living yourlife one day at a time, you live ALL the days of your life.
Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment youstop trying.
Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us toeach together.
Don't be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find. The quickest way to receivelove is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keeplove is to give it wings.
Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where youare going.
Don't forget, a person's greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
Don't be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.
Don't use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.
Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery and Today is a gift: that's why we call it ‘ThePresent'.
