Once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love.
One day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean. So all the feelings prepared their boats to leave .
Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment.
When the island was almost totally under, love decided it was time to leave.
She began looking for someone to ask for help. Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked, "Richness, can I come with you on your boat?"
Richness answered, "I'm sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere."
Then Love decided to ask Vanity for help who was passing by in a beautiful vessel. Love cried out, "Vanity, help me please!" "I can't help you," Vanity said, "You are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat."
Next, Love saw Sadness passing by. Love said, "Sadness, please let me go with you."
Sadness answered, "Love, I'm sorry, but, I just need to be alone now."
Then, Love saw Happiness. Love cried out, "Happiness, please take me with you." But Happiness was so overjoyed8 that he didn't hear Love calling to him.
Love began to cry. Then, she heard a voice say, "Come Love, I will take you with me." It was an elder. Love felt so blessed1 and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived on land the elder went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the elder.
Love then found Knowledge and asked, "Who was it that helped me?""It was Time,' Knowledge answered. "But why did Time help me when no one else would?"Love asked.
Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is.
An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer contractor of his plans to leavethe house building business and live a more leisurely life. He would miss the paycheck, but heneeded to retire. They could get by.
The contrctor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one morehouse as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his haertwas not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials.
It was an unfortunate way to end his career. When the carpenter finished his work and thebuilder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said, "my gift to you."
What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he wouldhave done it all so differently, Now he had to live in the home hs had built none too well.
So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing toput up less than best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with ashock we look at we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized that we woulddone it differently.
Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely.
It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deservesto be lived graciously and with dinity.
The plaque on the wall says, "Life ia a do-it-yourself project." Who could say it more clearly?Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will bethe result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.
Balzac once said artistic creation was “an exhausting strug-gle”.
He believed that only by tenacious work and fearing notafraid of difficulties could you show yourtalent.
It was just likethe soldiers charging the fortress, not relaxing your effort foreven a moment.
Once Balzac wrote for hours on end, he was so tired that hecould not hold out any longer.
He ran to a friend's home andplunged headlong on the sofa.He wanted to sleep, but he toldhisfriend he must be woken up within an hour.
His friend, seeinghim so tired, did not wake him up on time. After he woke up,Balzac got veryangry at his friend.Fortunately his friend had anintimate understanding of him and did notquarrel with him.
Balzac did not smoke cigarettes, nor did he drink any alco-hol.
But he got one habit:while he was writing he always drankvery strong coffee that could almostanaesthetize his stomach.
Hedidn't add milk, nor did he add sugar in his coffee. It would notsatisfy him until it was madebitter.
People generally did not liketo drink such bitter coffee. That had strange stimulus effecttohim, and could help him drive the sleepiness away, according to himself.
