成語(yǔ)寓言故事:Lu Ban Makes a Magpie魯班造鵲
During the Spring and Autumn Period (770一476 B.C.), a skillful craftsman named Gongshu Zi in the State of Lu, known to people as "Lu Ban", made a magpie with bamboo and wood.
春秋時(shí)期，魯國(guó)有個(gè)能工巧匠公輸子，人稱“魯班”。他用竹木造了一只喜鵲。
A machine was installed in this magpie which, when started, could fly high like a real bird. It actually flew continually for three days and nights before it landed.
這只木制的喜鵲，安裝著機(jī)關(guān)。只要一開(kāi)動(dòng)它，就能像真的鳥(niǎo)一樣展翅高飛。它一連飛了三天三夜才降落下來(lái)。
Gongshu Zi greatly appreciated this excellent work of his own.
公輸子非常欣賞自己這件得意的作品。
When Mo Zi (Master of the Mohist School) heard of this, he went immediately to see Gongshu Zi and said to him:
墨子知道了這件事情以后，立刻去見(jiàn)公輸子，對(duì)他說(shuō):
"As you know, it takes an ordinary carpenter a very short time to make a linchpin of a wheel with the minimum amount of timber. A vehicle with a linchpin inserted into each end of an axle can carry many things and bear a heavy load of 50 dan(1 hectolitre). But you took painstaking effort to make this wooden magpie. Though pretty and able to fly, it cannot compare with the linchpin in terms of practical value. Things made by a carpenter should be useful for people's life, so that everyone will praise him for his cleverness and skill. Otherwise, he is bound to be derided."
“你知道，普通的木匠只花很短的時(shí)間，用極少的木料就能做成車轄。將車轄插在車軸的兩端，這樣的車子可以裝載許多東西，能經(jīng)受五十石的重壓。而這只你費(fèi)了心血做成的木頭喜鵲，雖然會(huì)飛也很漂亮，但是卻不如車轄那樣有實(shí)用價(jià)值。木匠做出來(lái)的東西，要對(duì)人們的生活有幫助，大家才會(huì)夸他心靈手巧;否則難免被人笑罵。”
成語(yǔ)寓言故事:Jing Gong Prays for Rain 景公求雨
One year it did not rain for a long time in the State of Qi, and there was an extremely severe drought.
有一年，齊國(guó)很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間沒(méi)有下雨，發(fā)生了特大旱災(zāi)。
Jing Gong, the King of Qi, was very worried. He wanted to offer sacrifices to the mountain deity to pray for rain. His prime minister Yan Zi said to him:
國(guó)王齊景公心里非常焦急，他想去祭祀山神求雨。宰相晏子對(duì)他說(shuō):
"Your Majesty, don't do that. It is no use to beg the mountain deity for mercy. The stones in the mountains are like his bones and sinews; the soil in the mountains is like his muscle; the grass and trees in the mountains ane like his hair. When it doesn't rain for a long time, the hair of the mountain deity will wither and his muscles will be seared in the sun. Won't the mountain deity be anxious for rain too? If he could make it rain, it would have rained long ago."
“大王，不要去，求山神沒(méi)有用處。山上的石頭，就好像山的筋骨;山上的泥土，就好像山的肌肉;山上的草木，就好像山的毛發(fā)。長(zhǎng)久不下雨，山神的毛發(fā)也枯死了，肌肉也曬焦了，山神難道就不著急要雨嗎?如果山神能夠使天下雨，那么雨早已下了。”
Jing Gong said:
景公說(shuō):
"All right, we won't beg the mountain deity. Then how about begging Hebo (the river deity)?"
“不求山神也罷，那么去求河伯吧!
"Your Majesty, it's no use either," replied Yan Zi. "Water is the territory of I-Iebo. Fish and soft-shelled turtles are his subjects. When it hasn't rained for a long time, the water in the river will dry up, which means that Hebo will lose his territory; his subjects like fish and soft-shelled turtles will all die of thirst. If Hebo could make it rain; it would have rained long ago. What is the use of praying to Hebo?"
晏子又說(shuō):“大王，不行。水是河伯的國(guó)土，魚(yú)鱉是河伯的百姓，天不下雨，河里的水干了，就等于河伯的國(guó)土喪失了;河伯的百姓，像魚(yú)呀，鱉呀，也統(tǒng)統(tǒng)要干死了。如果河伯能夠叫天下雨，那么雨早就下了。去祈求河伯又有什么用呢?”
Convinced by Yan Zi's words, Jing Gong no longer prayed to the deities for rain.
景公聽(tīng)了晏子的這番話，就不再去向神求雨了。
成語(yǔ)寓言故事:A Sarcastic Retort反唇相譏
Yan Zi of the State of Qi was sent on a mission to the State ofChu. The King of Chu intended to humiliate the State of Qi toYan Zi's face.
One day, the King of Chu gave a banquet for Yan Zi. Just
齊國(guó)的晏子出使到楚國(guó)，楚王有意要當(dāng)著晏子的面侮辱齊國(guó)。
when they were enjoying it, two petty officials brought a convictto the King.
一天，楚王擺了酒席招待晏子。正當(dāng)他們吃得高興的時(shí)候，兩個(gè)小官押著一個(gè)犯人來(lái)見(jiàn)楚王。
Deliberately the King of Chu asked:
楚王故意問(wèn)道:
"What crime has this man committed?"
“這人犯了了一么罪?”
One of the petty officials answered:
小官回答說(shuō):
"He robs."
“他是一個(gè)強(qiáng)盜。”
Again the King of Chu asked:
楚王又問(wèn):
“Where is he from?"
“他是哪個(gè)國(guó)家的人?”
The petty official answered:
小官回話:
"He is from the State of Qi."
“他是齊國(guó)人。”
The King of Chu turned to Yan Zi and said:
楚王回頭對(duì)晏子說(shuō):
"So the people of the State of Qi are used to committingrobbery."
“原來(lái)齊國(guó)人是慣于當(dāng)強(qiáng)盜的。”
Yan Zi stood up and replied:
晏子站起來(lái)答道:
"Your Majesty, I heard that when orange trees grown in thesouth of the Huai River are transplanted to the north of Huai River,they become trifoliate orange trees. Outwardly the leaves of orangetrees and those of trifoliate orange trees look alike, but the tastesof their fruits are entirely different. Our people of the State of Qinever commit robbery, but once they come to the State of Chu,they start to engage in criminal activities. I think, maybe this isthe effect of the environment and climate here."
“大王，我聽(tīng)說(shuō)生長(zhǎng)在淮南的橘樹(shù)，移植到淮北就會(huì)變成積樹(shù)。從外表上看，橘樹(shù)和積樹(shù)的葉子是一樣的，但是這兩種樹(shù)的果子的味道卻完全不同。我們齊國(guó)的老百姓從來(lái)不做強(qiáng)盜，一到楚國(guó)就干起犯罪的勾當(dāng)來(lái)了。我看，這也許是受這里的水土環(huán)境的影響吧!”
As the King of Chu heard this, he was struck dumb withshame.
楚王聽(tīng)了，羞愧得連一句話都說(shuō)不出來(lái)。
