Belling the cat
Long ago, there was a big cat in the house. He caught many mice while they were stealing food.
從前，一所房子里面有一只大貓，他抓住了很多偷東西的老鼠。
One day the mice had a meeting to talk about the way to deal with their common enemy. Some said this, and some said that.
一天，老鼠在一起開(kāi)會(huì)商量如何對(duì)付他們共同的敵人。會(huì)上大家各有各的主張，
At last a young mouse got up, and said that he had a good idea.
最后，一只小老鼠站出來(lái)說(shuō)他有一個(gè)好主意。
"We could tie a bell around the neck of the cat. Then when he comes near, we can hear the sound of the bell, and run away."

Everyone approved of this proposal, but an old wise mouse got up and said, "That is all very well, but who will tie the bell to the cat?" The mice looked at each other, but nobody spoke.

A Woodman came into a forest to ask the Trees to give him a handle for Ax. It seemed so modest a request that the principal tree at once agreed to it, and it was settled among them that the plain, homely Ash should furnish what was wanted. No sooner had the Woodman fitted the staff to his purpose ,than he began laying about him on all side. felling the whole matter too late, whispered to the Cedar: "the first concession has lost all ;if we has not a sacrificed our humble neighbor, we might have yet stood for ages ourselves."
中文譯文：
有一個(gè)樵夫來(lái)到森林里,要求樹(shù)給他一跟斧柄,看來(lái)他的請(qǐng)求非常謙虛,立刻得到了樹(shù)的首領(lǐng)的同意.他們決定由平凡而樸素的白楊樹(shù)來(lái)提供所需要的東西.樵夫剛按好斧柄,就開(kāi)始到處亂砍,森林里最高的樹(shù)都砍倒了,樹(shù)林現(xiàn)在察覺(jué)大勢(shì)已去,就小聲對(duì)衫樹(shù)說(shuō)："第一次的讓步已失去了一切.如果我們不犧牲我們的小小的鄰居,我們自己還可以活無(wú)數(shù)年呢."
結(jié)論：這故事諷刺忘恩負(fù)義的人，也告訴我們對(duì)敵人的施舍就是對(duì)自己的殘忍。

A wolf wanted to eat the sheep, but he was afraid of the vigilant shepherd and his dogs.

One day the wolf found the skin of a sheep. He put it on and walked among the sheep.
有一天狼發(fā)現(xiàn)了一塊羊皮，便披著它混入羊群。
A lamb thought that the wolf was its mother because his skin looked like hers. So it followed the wolf.
一只小羊羔把這只披著羊皮的狼誤認(rèn)為自己的媽媽，被領(lǐng)出了羊群。
Soon after they had left the dogs, the wolf came at the lamb and ate it up. For some time he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals.
