In the past, someone said:
從前，有個(gè)人說(shuō):
“The pear is good for the teeth, but bad for the spleen; the date is good for the spleen, butbad for the teeth.”
“吃生梨對(duì)牙齒有好處，但是會(huì)傷脾;吃紅棗對(duì)脾有好處，但是會(huì)損害牙齒。”
A young man heard this, thought it over for a long time and said:
一個(gè)年輕人聽(tīng)了這句話，想了很久，說(shuō)道:
“Then, when I eat a pear, I’ll keep it in my mouth and chew it with my teeth, but won’tswallow it,so it will not do any harm to my spleen.
“那我吃生梨的時(shí)候，就含在嘴里，用牙齒咀嚼，但是不往肚里咽，它就損傷不了我的脾。
When I eat a date, I won’t chew it, but will swallow it whole, so it will not do any harm to myteeth.”
吃棗的時(shí)候，我把它整個(gè)兒吞下去，不去咀嚼，這樣就不會(huì)損害我的牙齒了。”
When people heard this, they jeered at him:

His book On the Physiognomy of Horses was a classic piece of work on that subject.

Bo Le had a son who wanted to learn his father’s special skill and knowledge.
伯樂(lè)有個(gè)兒子很想把父親的技能繼承下來(lái)。
He read the book On the Physiognomy of Horses over and over again.
他反復(fù)閱讀《相馬經(jīng)》，
Whenever he went out, he would carry the book with him,and as soon as he saw a horse,he would take out the book,
出去相馬時(shí)也帶在身邊，一看到馬，就把書(shū)拿出來(lái)，
and compare the horse with the drawings of various horses in the book one by one.
按照書(shū)上繪畫(huà)的各種馬的圖樣，一一加以對(duì)照。
One day,he finally found a horse which looked similar to the drawing in the book.
一天，他終于找到了一匹馬，看來(lái)跟書(shū)上繪著的一樣，
He led it home to his father, but it turned out to be an inferior horse of fiery temperament,
牽回家給父親一看，卻是一匹性子很兇悍的劣馬，
and not a good steed which could gallop 1,000 li a day.Bo Le said to his son:

“If you look for a steed with the aid of drawings, how can you find a really fine one?”

The peachwood charm was beside itself with rage, and answered back sarcastically.
桃符怒不可遏，反唇相譏。它們互相不服氣，
Both sides refused to give in, and squabbled endlessly with a stream of abuse against eachother.
彼此罵不絕口，爭(zhēng)吵不休。
At this moment, the deity of the door came to mediate:
這時(shí)候，門(mén)神出來(lái)勸解說(shuō):
“It is only because we have no ability that we have to attach ourselves to the door of others.What’s the point of quarrelling with each other?”
“我們都是因?yàn)闆](méi)有什么本事，才依附在別人的門(mén)下，還爭(zhēng)什么強(qiáng)，斗什么氣呢?”
