A long time ago, there was a Bo Luo Nai City in the State of Jia Shi.
Outside the city was a large forest, where 500 macaques lived.
One night the 500 macaques wandered around and came to a ni ju lu (bodhi) tree.
Under the tree was a deep ancient well.
The water in the well was very clean and reflected the full moon in the sky.
The leading macaque bent over the well and watched carefully for a while.
Then it jumped onto the edge of the well and said to the others: "Alas!Today the moon hasdied and fallen into this well.
Let us scoop it up together; otherwise the nights will be dark forever."
All the macaques tweaked their ears and scratched their cheeks, saying:"The well is so deep. How can we scoop up the moon?"
The leading macaque had a sudden brainwave and said: "I have it!
I will climb up the tree and grasp a branch, then another one grasps my tail.
In this way, one following another in succession, can't we hang down into the well?"
When the other macaques heard this, they jumped with joy.
So they linked their heads and tails together, extending longer and longer until they almosttouched the surface of the well water.
At this moment, the branch broke with a big crack and all 500 macaques fell into the ancientwell.

Then ask each one of them to describe the shape of the elephant."
The officials led the elephant to the king.
Several blind men surrounded it and felt it with their hands.
The king asked them: "What do you think the elephant resembles?"
All these blind men strove to be the first to answer.
One blind man felt the elephant's tusk and said:"The elephant resembles a long, long carrot."
One blind man felt the elephant's ear and said: "The elephant resembles a dustpan."
One blind man felt the elephant's head and said:"The elephant resembles a large stone."
One blind man felt the elephant's foot and said:"The elephant resembles a stone mortar."
One blind man felt the elephant's back and said:"The elephant resembles a bed."
One blind man felt the elephant's belly and said:"The elephant resembles a water vat."
"Ha! Ha! All of you are wrong." The last blind man pulled the elephant's tail and said:
"Let me tell you that the elephant resembles a long, thin rope."
Upon this the king and his officials all burst into laughter.
Song Dingbo of Nanyang came across a ghost when he was walking at night. Dingbo asked whohe was.
"I am a ghost," replied the ghost. "And who are you?"
"I am a ghost too," Dingbo lied.
"Where are you going?" the ghost asked.
"To the City of Wan," Dingbo replied.
"I am going to the City of Wan, too," said the ghost. "We happen to go the same way."
Thereupon, they walked together. After walking for a few li, the ghost suggested:
"It is too tiring to walk. Let us carry each other on the back by turns."
"Excellent," Dingbo agreed.
Thereupon the ghost carried Dingbo on its back. After walking for a few li, it found Dingborather heavy.
It became suspicious and asked:
"You are too heavy. Are you not a ghost?"
"I died not long ago, so I am heavy," Dingbo gave a clever reply.
It was now Dingbo's turn to carry the ghost. As expected, the ghost really had no weight.
Thus they carried each other by turns and went on their journey.
At this moment, Dingbo asked again: "I am a new ghost. I don't know what ghosts are afraidof."
The ghost whispered: "It is man's spittle that ghosts fear most."
As they walked along, they came to a small creek.
Dingbo let the ghost cross first.
The ghost crossed the creek as if it were walking on land in shoes, without making the slightestnoise.
But when Dingbo crossed the creek, he splashed the water in all directions with a lot of noise.
The ghost became suspicious again and asked:"Why was there such noise when you crossedthe creek?"
Dingbo explained:"I'm a new ghost and not used to crossing the water yet."
At that, the ghost was convinced.
As they were approaching the City of Wan, Dingbo carried the ghost on his shoulder, held ittightly and started to run very fast with vigorous strides.
The ghost shouted loudly and demanded that it be put down, but Dingbo turned a deaf ear toits demand.
He reached the city of Wan in one breath and threw the ghost to the ground.
Then and there the ghost revealed its original shape of a sheep.
Dingbo sold it and, fearing it might turn back into a ghost, spit on it several times.
With a payment of 1,500 coins from the sale, he left happily.
