THE ANALECTS
13. Master Yu said,
In your promises cleave to what is right,
And you will be able to fulfill your word.
In your obeisances cleave to ritual,
And you will keep dishonor at bay.
Marry one who has not betrayed her own kin,
And you may safely present her to your Ancestors.
14. The Master said, A gentleman who never goes on eating till he is sated, who does not demand comfort in his home, who is diligent in business and cautious in speech, who associates with those that possess the Way and thereby corrects his own faults – such a one may indeed be said to have a taste for learning.
15. Tzu-kung said, ‘Poor without cadging, rich without swagger.’ What of that? The Master said, Not bad. But better still, ‘Poor, yet delighting in the Way, rich, yet a student of ritual.’ Tzu-kung said, The saying of the Songs,As thing cut, as thing filed,As thing chiseled, as thing polished refers, I suppose, to what you have just said? The Master said, Ssu, now I can really begin to talk to you about the Songs, for when I allude to sayings of the past, you see what bearing they have on what was to come after.
16. The Master said, (The good man) does not grieve that other people do not recognize his merits his only anxiety is lest he should fail to recognize theirs.
Hair on End
(Tune: “The River All Red”)
Yue Fei
Hair on end and shoving my hat,
In wrath I lean on th’ balustrade,
While th’ rain leaves off its pitter-pat.
Eyes fixed skyward, I sign long and loud.
A hero’s fury fills my breast.
At thirsty, nothing achieved, unknown,
—but these to me are light as dust—
I’ve fought through eight-thousand li
Holding the field, under cloud and moon.
What I do mind, is not to let
My young head turn white in vain,
And be gnawed by empty sorrow then.
With the Jingkang Humiliation yet
Unavenged, unredressed,
How can a subject’s grievance be
Ever effaced from memory?
I’ll send war-chariots rough-shod
Through the gorges of Mt. Helan;
To quench my thirst, I’d drink the blood
Of Huns, while laugh and chat I can;
Heroic minded, to satiate hunger,
I would make Tartars’ flesh my fare.
’Til our lost land is all retrieved,
Then to the Imperial Palace, there
I’ll make obeisance, relieved!

膏鋒鍔;
Meditations On The Yellow Crane
(Tune: “The River All Red”)
To spy a vista of th' Central Plain,
From far away my eyes I strain.
Beyond the hazy wilderness
Are many wall-enclosed cities.
In years that had away declined,
There, flower-sheltered, willow-shaded,
Were gabled towers decorated
With phoenix-and-dragon designs.
Before the Imperial Hill were whirls
Of maids wearing emeralds and pearls;
And in the Royal Theatre, oft
Music and singing rose aloft.
But now, what can be there descried?
Rampant in the suburbs ride
Mail-clad invaders, kicking up dust
Like windstorms in awesome gusts.
What has become of our warriors?
They're turned to grease for blades of swords!
What has become of the people?
They're filling up gullies and fords!
The self-same landscape; I sign
That thousands of hamlets ruined lie!
O when, for sanction can I plead,
An army of crack troops to lead,
So as in one straight dash to cross
The River and the Lo, to clear
Up the alien, barbarous dross!
And then returning to, to resume
My Hangyang tour, then disappear
Astride the Yellow Crane, like fume!
