  The Angler

  —By Washington Irving

  How comforting it is to see a cheerful and contented old age; and to behold a poor fellow, like this, after being tempest-lost through life, safely moored in a snug and quiet harbor in the evening of his days! His happiness, however, sprung from within himself, and was independent of external circumstances; for he had that inexhaustible good-nature, which is the most precious gift of Heaven, spreading itself like oil over the troubled sea of thought, and keeping the mind smooth and equable in the roughest weather.

  On inquiring further about him I learned that he was a universal favorite in the village, and the oracle of the taproom; where he delighted the rustics with his songs, and, like Sindbad, astonished them with his stories of strange lands, and shipwrecks, and sea-fights. He was much noticed too by gentlemen sportsmen of the neighborhood; had taught several of them the art of angling; and was a privileged visitor to their kitchens. The whole tenor of his life was quiet and inoffensive,being principally passed about the neighboring streams, when the weather and season were favorable; and at other times he employed himself at home, preparing his fishing tackle for the next campaign, or manufacturing rods, nets, and flies, for his patrons and pupils among the gentry.

  Suit is Best

  -By William Hazlitt

  The power force of words lies not in the words themselves, but in their application. A word may be a fine sounding word, of an unusual length, and very imposing from its learning and novelty, and yet in the connection in which it is introduced may be quite pointless and irrelevant.

  It is not pomp or pretension, but the adaptation of the expression to the idea, that clenches a writer's meaning: as it is not the size or glossiness of the materials, but their being fitted each to its place, that gives strength to the arch; or as the pegs and nails are as necessary to the support of the building as the larger timbers, and more so than the mere showy, unsubstantial ornaments.

  I hate anything that occupies more space than it is worth. I hate to see a load of bandboxes go along the street, and I hate to see a parcel of big words without anything in them. A person who dews not deliberately dimples of all his thoughts alike in cumbrous draperies and flimsy disguises may strike out twenty varieties of familiar everyday language, each coming somewhat nearer to the feeling he wants to convey, and at last not hit upon that particular and only one which may be said to be identical with the exact impression in his mind.

  This would seem to show that Mr. Cobalt is hardly right in saying that the first word that occurs is always the best. It may be a very good one; and yet a better may present itself on reflection or from time to time. It may be suggested naturally, however, and spontaneously, from a fresh and lively conception of the subject.

  When Love Beckons You愛的召喚

  -By Kahlil Gibran卡利爾·紀(jì)伯倫

  When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions ms may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

  For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

  But if, in your fear, you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, not all of your tears. Love gives naught but itself takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not, nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.

  Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must have desires, let these be your desires:

  To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

  To know the pain of too much tenderness.

  To be wounded by your understanding of love.

  And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

  To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

  在黎明帶著輕快的心醒來并感謝又一個有愛的日子;

  To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

  午休時,沉思愛的心醉神怡;

  To return home at eventide with gratitude;

  在黃昏懷著感恩之心回家;

  And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
