Since its first appearance in the 15th century in the courts of European royalty, ballet has become one of the most loved forms of dance. One of the most beloved ballets is “Swan Lake.” First performed in Russia in 1895, it continues to thrill audiences around the world today.
The word “ballet” itself is French, and comes from the Italian word ballo, meaning “a dance.” Ballet dancing, as we know it today, is a result of influences from many countries. Italy, France, Russia, England, and America have all contributed important elements to this style of dance.
Highly technical, ballet is always performed to music and often tells a story. Though learning this style of dance is a difficult process, the results on stage are magical. The graceful moves display the body in the most elegant and beautiful manner possible.

Ballet Dream
When I see the girls dance in the movie, I will be very jealous of their elegant temperament. I wish I am one of them, especially when my mother speaks highly of these dancing girls. Actually, my mother once had tried to send me to learn ballet, but I was too small and couldn’t enjoy the class. I always skipped the class and then went to play with my friends. Later my mother found the truth and she had gave up asking me to learn ballet. Now I feel regretful, if I insist, I could be the girl that let my parents be proud of. The lucky thing is that I have find the things I am interested in and I will not give up.
The dancer’s left foot is elegantly wrapped in her ballet shoe, tied to the ankle with a silk ribbon. The shoeless right foot, however, looks horribly different. Bruises and scars occupy every inch of her toes. I can only imagine the untold hardship the dancer must have endured for the endless hours of practice to look so glamorous on the stage. Likewise, behind every seemingly stunning success, there can be failures, disappointments, and embarrassments. When the whole world is crazy for JK Rowling’s Harry Potter stories, rarely do people know it was after the books had been turned down 12 times by the publisher that they finally came out. Nothing is difficult to a willing heart. However, when we admire others’ success, we should remember it is not from nowhere.
I have imagined the dancer to be my friend. I will, instead of telling her how awesome her dancing is, ask her to take good care of herself, for health is the real elegance of life.
