  J. K. Rowling, author of the hugely popular Harry Potter series, has written her own special magic in the fantasy genre (體裁). Though she may be the best-known fantasy writer to the current generation, she is hardly the first. A number of others, many of whom, like Rowling, are British, were writing fantasy novels before J. K. Rowling was born.

One such writer is George MacDonald, a Scottish author, best known for his novels Phantastes and Lilith. MacDonald's work, like Rowling' s, showed that fantasy literature could hold appeal for older children and even adults. In Phantastes, a young man named Anodos journeys through a fantasy land where he experiences magical adventures. While Phantastes is a relatively light story, Lilith, a much later work by MacDonald, is a darker and more serious tale. In this novel, a character called Mr, Vane travels through a fantasy land. There he meets Lilith, an attractive but troubling fairy princess; In describing Mr. Vane s experiences, MaCDonald explores the question of what it means to be human.

Another British fantasy writer, C. S. Lewis, acknowledged that he was grateful to George MacDonald. It was MacDonald's mythmaking, rather than his writing style, that Lewis admired. Lewis' s The Chronicles of Narnia, a tale of mythical power, is a group of seven books tied together more by the fictional world they created than by the description of a particular character's experiences.

Narnia is a magical place where animals can talk and time progresses at its own rate. Like Harry Potter and his mates at Hogwarts, the characters who live in Narnia struggle with the conflicting forces of good and evil.

Yet another fantasy series, occupying fewer printed pages but treating its material in the way the Harry Potter series does, is J.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The series describes a group of seven characters who journey together in order to destroy a ring which would give an evil lord power if he gets it. As Lewis does with Narnia, Tolkien invents a universe, which he calls Middle Earth, and peoples, from humans to terrifying creatures called “ores” and “uruk-hai."

  25. What do the four writers in the text have in common?

  A. They are all Scottish writers.

  B. They are all fantasy novelists.

  C. They are all best-selling writers.

  D. They have the same writing style.

  26. We can infer from the text that __________.

  A. Phantastes is a serious story.

  B. Lilith is one of MacDonald' s early works.

  C. The Chronicles of Narnia is a fantasy series.

  D. The Lord of the Rings is the earliest fantasy work.

27.It can be learned from the text that ________

  A. J.K.,Rowling was born much later than the others

  B. MacDonald's works are only popular among children

  C. Narnia is the name of a character in Lewis' s novel

  D. Lewis disliked MacDonald' s mythmaking

  28. The main purpose of the text is to _______

  A. introduce several British writers

  B. discuss Rowling' s Harry Potter series

  C. show fantasy stories' influence on Rowling

  D. explain the development of fantasy literature

“It' s all pretty surreal(超現(xiàn)實(shí)的);it' s amazing, fantastic," Hugo Bugg, 27, said after finding out he had become Chelsea Flower Show' s youngest gold medal winner.

His Waterscape Garden, in cooperation with the Royal Bank of Canada, was designed to show how gardeners can conserve(保存)and use storm water all year round.

The garden has a number of pools for collecting rainwater, which is then filtered (滲透) out into the garden through loose stones.

“Because of the severe flooding we' ve seen in parts of the UK, I wanted to show how even inexperienced gardeners can manage storm water in their gardens through simple techniques," said Bugg.

While those unfamiliar with the gardening world may not have heard of the young designer, Bugg has been gradually building a reputation for himself- and collecting a number of gardening prizes -- over the last few years.

In 2010 he was named RHS (Royal Horticultural Society)young designer of the year and in 2011 he.won a gold medal at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

RHS was founded in the UK in 1804 for the improvement of gardening, and is responsible for the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show taking place in London in May every year.

But Bugg, who had studied garden design at Falmouth University, said he was not ready to become a celebrated gardener yet.

Instead, he chooses to focus on his design business, Hugo Bugg Landscapes. It is based in Exeter, Devon, where he now lives. He said he had received a few offers to do television work but had so far turned them down.

Born in Oxfordshire, Bugg said he was five when he first found a love for gardening, when his family moved to "an old house with a large garden" in Devon.

"You could say I' ve grown up in the garden," said the award-winning designer, who remembers spending many weekends clearing the three acres of wilderness (荒地) with his father (Stephen, 66, an art teacher).

As RHS's golden boy, Bugg is favorably impressed by the increased involvement of the new generation.

"There are definitely more young people at Chelsea this year, which is fantastic," he said. "Hopefully, when you start seeing more young people at the shows doing things it will attract more."

  29. Hugo Bugg' s Waterscape Garden was designed " mainly to __

  A. teach people how to avoid storm damage

  B. show people how to make good use of rainwater

  C. let people know about the Royal Bank of Canada

  D. increase the confidence of inexperienced gardeners

  30. According to Hugo Bugg, the next step of his work is

  A. to run his company better

  B. to achieve international fame

  C. to make more TV appearances

  D. to win more prizes at garden shows

  31. What is Hugo Bugg' s wish?

  A. Helping young people to improve their gardening skills.

  B. Greater participation of the youth in the garden shows.

  C. Attracting more people to his Waterscape Garden.

  D. Increasing support from new gardening societies.

  32. The author wrote the text to_____

  A. invite visitors to Chelsea Flower Show

  B. introduce a new infiltration technology

  C. report an award-winning young gardener

  D. describe the Royal Horticultural Society's work
